Alexisonfire Watch Out! |
The guys in Alexisonfire met success after their debut and were told by their label that on the next album they should go with a well known mainstream producer. Instead they went with some smaller dude and recorded what would become their magnum opus in a home studio. Atmospheric sounds, a little less screaming, more of Green`s beautiful vocals and experimenting with influences outside of just the hardcore scene and it all paid off. Maybe not as immediate as "Crisis" which had memorable songs like "Boiled Frogs" and "This Could Be Anywhere", but the lyrics and mood on this outshines that easily and this will forever be my favorite Alexisonfire |
Alice in Chains Dirt |
"We deal with out daily demons through Music. All the poison that builds up during the day we cleanse when we play" - Jerry Cantrell. This pretty much sums it up. This album is all tension and release. It starts like a punch in the face with "Them Bones", which might be among the best opening tracks of all time, and right off the bat takes the listener on a stark Journey filled with anger, drugs, depression, anguish and turmoil. Just so much darkness. Not a single track i would trade away for anything in the world and when it ends on such a high with "Would" i often think to myself that this is grunge in its purest form |
American Football American Football |
This is the culimination of everything Mike Kinsella and the other guys in the band had previously been involved in. The Perfect cocktail of indie, emo and Math and kind of a slacker type of vibe not so different from the likes of Pavement. The obvious lyrical influences from Morissey and not finnishing songs before entering the studio seems almost like a homage to a bad habit the band had in "half assing" Things as guitarist Steve Holmes once said, resulted in one of the most laid back, stripped Down, perfectly emo-jazzy and super sad records ever |
Amon Duul II Yeti |
This is a psychadelic and krautrock masterpiece. Theres no way around it. All the tropes and ingredients are evident. From the trippy album cover, the avant garde approach to both the pacing, sound and tunes and the insane amount of improvisation on this thing. "Soap Shop Rock" is essential for everyone who is interested in psychadelic or kraurock to hear. Even tho the title track can drag a little bit it doesnt affect the fact that the entire record is practically a flawless peice of art within the genre. "Eye Shaking King" and "Archangels Thunderbird" stands out among the best songs in their entire discog as well |
Ceres I Don't Want To Be Anywhere But Here |
Dance Gavin Dance Downtown Battle Mountain |
I have nothing but love and admiration for this album. It blew my mind when i was a kid and redefined what i thought Music was. This record makes things that arent supposed to work.. work! The song titles are Complete nonsense and the lyrics downright surreal and absurd and no one in their right mind should take this seriously- but i did and i do. Jon Mess screams With such swagger and Jonny Craig`s voice soars unbelievably strong above all the instrumentation and brings soul and conviction to even the weirdest constructed lines of Words. Along With Swan and Mingus the OG DGD guys have become among my favorite musicians of all time. I still to this day have this dream they will reunite for DBM III and make it a trilogy like Saturation |
Foxing Nearer My God |
A hard to pinpoint mixture of sounds and influences - with elements of punk, rock, noise and sometimes reminiscent of early 2000 era Radiohead to some degree on songs like Gameshark or giving straight out 80s rock Vibes With the chorus guitar effect on Bastardizer. Not to mention theres even traces of RnB and electronica on this thing. I have no problem calling this a modern masterpiece within the emo genre because it is. It is a band willing to let a song go in unexpected directions and take risks and the pay off is huge. Hope they will continue in this vein on their upcoming Projects. |
Hawkwind In Search of Space |
The legendary Space rockers in Hawkwind were amidst changes during the making of this record; a bass player suddenly leaving and guitarist Huw Lloyd suddenly announcing his departure following a bad LSD trip after playing a festival show. By all means it did not seem Things were in the right Place for the band to make one of their most stunning albums, but they pulled it off. This record shows off all their strenghts and then some. With the iconic Space rock songs like "Master of the Universe" and 12 string guitar driven folky songs like "We Took the Wrong Step years Ago" and "Children of The Sun", this album never fails to impress With the bands versatility and ability to deliver such quality |
