Deftones Around the Fur |
This one has an atmosphere like nothing else. Sinister and sexual, primal and poetic. You've heard it a thousand times, I don't think I need to say more. |
Deftones Deftones |
Brutal and unrelenting and somber and gorgeous and the perfect culmination of everything they'd be working toward since '95. |

Metallica Load |
The rousing manifesto for a new era of Metallica -- one which, unfortunately, never lived up to its promises. "Bleeding Me" and "The Outlaw Torn" are brilliant career milestones. |
Metallica Hardwired...To Self-Destruct |
Their best album in twenty years. For real this time. |

The lyric "There's a moon in my throat" warrants at least a 3.5. |
The Cure The Top |
The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works |
How this is their lowest-rated album here is beyond me. I get that the experimental tracks might feel a little underdeveloped but they're so eclectic and engaging that the record flows smooth as butter. And the rest is classic Dillinger with a few twists. The final trifecta might be the best three-track run in their entire catalog. Love it. |
The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation |
What a stellar way to cap things off, and I don't even have the sentimental attachment that longtime Dillinger fans might. Very all-encompassing, touching on just about every genre they ever dabbled in, and there are still some curveballs thrown in. To sweeten the pot, the closing track is among their best ever. This is how you go out swinging. |

The Hoosiers The Illusion Of Safety |
The Killers Sam's Town |
Twenty One Pilots Trench |
Leaving the unnecessary sidesteps and painful regressions of "Blurryface" behind, Twenty One Pilots deliver their most mature effort yet, at the cost of some of the wistful fun that made their earlier work so appealing. |

Decidedly more vanilla than its Berlin brethren, but a thoroughly enjoyable listen in its own right. |
Deftones White Pony |
I understand why this album is put on a pedestal. It makes some huge leaps in their sound without losing the raw energy of Around the Fur. But it also doesn't provide much that isn't done better on that record or on some later record. |
Deftones Gore |
Like if you programmed a really smart AI to write a Deftones record. Solid songs beaten down by drowsy, off-putting production and an occasional lack of palpable enthusiasm. I'm glad it exists though. No other album of theirs has this aesthetic, for better or for worse. |
Deftones Ohms |
More sonically clean, more focused, and all around more 'Deftones-y' than Gore, no doubt. But a few of these songs have yet to resonate with me like they should if I'm gonna fawn like everyone else. I welcome that to change. |
Deftones Adrenaline |
I love the simplicity, and some of Steph's most creative riffage is here. But ultimately it's just prepubescent AtF. There are much worse things to be. |

It runs too long and the lyrics are more saccharine than ever, but you won't care when the sweet sounds of "How Beautiful You Are" or "Just Like Heaven" kick in. |
The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity |
I admire what this record is doing even if it doesn't always gel with me personally. It's a classic for a reason. Plus, "43% Burnt" was the first Dillinger track I ever heard and it's still among my favorites, so extra points there. |
The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine |
If I ever want to introduce someone to Dillinger, this is the album I'll point to. A perfect mix of their debut's jagged insanity and the polished hardcore soundscapes that grew to define them. |
The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis |
This seems to be a favorite around here, and on the surface I can see why. Obviously, "Farewell, Mona Lisa" is one of their masterpieces, and there are a few other highlights as well. But this also contains the most forgettable material the band ever produced. I don't know if it'll ever fully click with me. |
The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer |
I don't think it's a hot take to call this their most normie album. Greg's vocals especially are hookier than ever. A lot of great songs here but also the first (and only) time it feels like they might be treading water. |
