Burzum Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
Nostalgic, bleak and depressive: this album shines as a raw crazy diamond. And it seems, that it gets only better as years pass. Quite simple yet very original riffs meet a perfect 'wall of sound' production. The atmosphere is the main thing here. Everything is immersed in sadness and winter. The overall flow is so natural. "Tomhet" was basically improvised at the studio, but it works so well. A classic album hands down.
Burzum Filosofem
Filosofem is unique in so many ways and opened so many doors for future generations... The production is simply feral: vocals recorded with a headset mic, guitars were played through Varg's brother's stereo etc... Dunkelheit is beautiful, Jesu Dod is vicious and the long ambient track is simply perfect. A legendary record.
Cardiacs Sing to God
Celtic Frost Monotheist
Celtic Frost's goodbye is one of the darkest albums ever. Monolithic, personal and hopeless. The atmospheric sections are beautiful and drenched in sadness. And the heaviness is simply devastating. A colossal work of art.
Coroner Grin
It was simply too much ahead of its time. Criminally underrated and misunderstood.

ISIS In the Absence of Truth
After the great 'Panopticon' Isis somehow managed to make even more personal and natural album. The production is just flawless. The album, that never gets old. It never bores me. The atmosphere just gives the listener some kind of long forgotten escapism. It's a perfect album to listen while you're alone. Even the order of tracks is done so well, every new song just makes you hold your breath. And that build-up in 'Dulcinea'...(no explanation needed). A phenomenal record.
ISIS Oceanic
The most natural Isis album with a perfect flow. Huge ideas executed amazingly well. And of course 'Weight' is just a new level of massive.

Tarentel The Order of Things
Criminally underrated post-rock masterpiece. As good as Hex by Bark Psychosis or best GY!BE works.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
This MONSTER album is much better than all other albums of TDEP combined. Chris Pennie's drumwork is just brainsplattering. And vocals are 100x better than Greg's stuff. Album is an absolute peak of the band in every fucking way. Legendary cult classic.
Theatre Of Tragedy Aégis
The best gothic metal album is also a sad one. It's such a huge pity that goth genre took the other direction (generic pop music with distorted guitars)... 1998's "Aegis" reflects its time so well. Nowadays you just cannot listen to it without heavy nostalgia. The production is perfect, Liv Kristine's voice has the finest hour. But the most important is the great music. The amount of pure beauty is astonishing.

Burzum Det Som Engang Var
Some of the best Burzum moments are here. This one is probably the most 'traditional' album from Varg. The production is atmospheric: guitars sound more warm, the bass is loud and well played (as always). And the music is just great. I mean, Key To The Gate, Lost Wisdom and Snu Mikrokosmos' Tegn in one album...
Burzum Burzum
A stunning debut from one of the best one man bands ever.
Burzum Aske
The cover art is just plain savage. And on top of that you also get a lighter! This EP was recorded simultaneously with "Hvis Lyset tar Oss". Samoth of Emperor on bass. All three tracks are very strong and 'A Lost Forgotten Sad Spirit' is an all time Burzum classic.

And this is (probably) the worst Isis album. What a band. '20 Minutes / 40 Years' is an absolute masterpiece. The only song that drags a bit (still very good) is 'Threshold Of Transformation'. Production is good, but not as good as in other albums. The very low sub-bass is quite loud and a bit uncomfortable.
ISIS Panopticon
ISIS Celestial
Utterly heavy and vicious. Like a punch in a face with a brick. Just monstrous.
ISIS Mosquito Control
What a devastating debut... Vocals are just plain savage. 'Life Under The Swatter' is a wicked song. 'Hive Destruction' sounds like an actual hive destruction. The heaviest sections are simply ridiculous. Unstoppable EP.

This classic album is perfection. The killer guitar duel of Andy La Rocque and Pete Blakk delivers the best solos in metal history. There is so many hooks, mood changes etc... King is in top form. It's the last album with legendary Mikkey Dee. Hal Patino delivers his best performance ever too (just listen to "Lies"!). Every song is a masterpiece. Cvlt cvlt cvlt.
King Diamond ''Them''
Almost as good as Abigail and Conspiracy. The performance of Mikkey Dee is simply legendary (best work from him with any band in my opinion). Superb album.

Hehe, the bass is so loud on this one;) Quite a strange style and vibe, not so similar to other famous Norwegian acts. Tracks are very long, but never boring. An excellent and historically significant record.

Godflesh Decline and Fall
I'm giving this rating for the japanese edition with two great bonus tracks. Very solid and strong comeback of the industrial metal titans. 'Playing With Fire' and the crushing 'Decline & Fall' are especially good as are dub versions for the japanese edition. Everything is just right here. I am sure that upcoming full length will be amazing and this EP is a great warm-up. P.S. Horns up for the legendary BC Green's bass tone!

Amazing album, but drum machine really sucks, sorry. It could be much better with Snowy behind the kit. The last classic King Diamond album is also the most neoclassical one. My favourite track is "Into The Convent" with breathtaking solo (one of the best ever) from Andy.
King Diamond Fatal Portrait
Solid debut from King's new band. New members Andy La Rocque and Mikkey Dee later would become legends. You can hear a tiny tinge of speed metal here too. And the cover artwork is great! I suggest You to buy this album with bonus tracks "The Lake" and "No Presents For Christmas". Both are King Diamond's classics.

An interesting mix of styles on this one: symphonic keyboards (these sections sound like 'In The Nightside Eclipse' which was released the same year), medieval melodies, chants, some acoustic guitar passages, some raw dissonant riffs. But all of this somehow works. Music full of surprises. Samoth from Emperor does a great job on bass (really distinct) and guitars. Drumming is wild and great as always. Satyricon peaked with 'Nemesis Divina', but this one nevertheless is a good and original album.

Great music, but shitty production. Guitars are like a paper, some (really good) riffs are utterly indecipherable. Drums have a nice reverb, but are too overdiven. Vocals are way too loud. Only the bass sounds nice, loud and is played ferociously, what a performance by Chris Richards! Still, with all the problems, the songs hold up surprisingly well. If you don't mind getting through all that demo production, some best Suffo moments are here, such as insane outro riff from 'Ornaments of Decrepancy' or the first two tracks.

The rating doesn't really do justice to this album. Here we have just 4 proper album tracks. And the other songs are from "Disciples Of The Ultimate Void" demo (1999). Album tracks sound quite muddy and lo-fi, but I think the production is adequate and atmospheric. Performance is very good with the loud and distinct bass and badass drumming. The music itself is not so traditional as you might think. It's pretty brutal, intense and harmonies are always very interesting. The demo tracks sound very raw. Again, the playing is very good and the music is really cool. We all know, what a beast is Deathspell Omega now, but their debut has some amazing moments too.

By far the best post-The Eye album from King Diamond. Fresh ideas, very good production, great atmosphere.
King Diamond The Puppet Master
The second best album (after Voodoo) of post-classic King Diamond era. Very solid effort.

Mogwai Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
A very simple, yet very fresh sounding music. The overall flow is amazing as is the production. Perfect music for driving or just for the nice evening experience. And the strongest point: RANO PANO. It's my favorite Mogwai track by far. Unique structure - just one riff, but it is simply unforgettable. A truly phenomenal track.

Mogwai Rock Action

Moonspell Sin / Pecado
Morbid Angel Domination
Mouth Of The Architect Time and Withering
Pretty solid debut actually. The atmosphere is immersed in sadness. The vocals are varied, the high scream sounds very nice and original. Everything unfolds slowly through very long and repetitive instrumental sections. The band showed much potential and threw a few new things on the board. A really good post/sludge metal album.

Opeth Watershed
Probably the heaviest album from Opeth. And the most intricate. But all the symptoms of future decline are here. "Watershed" is a perfect title by all means. The loss of Lopez and Peter was just too huge... Of course, it's much better than later albums of horrible prog rock. It's also the last Opeth album I have bought.
Ozzy Osbourne No More Tears
Ozzy Osbourne Diary Of A Madman
Paradise Lost Obsidian
A pretty nice gothic metal album with a few doom moments and a fully doom metal opus 'Ravenghast' (best song on the album by far). Not a big fan of the production. Low end sounds amazing (the bass has the best tone in the whole Paradise Lost discography), but drums are overcompressed and the whole sound is a bit unnatural. No headroom at all. I think all the albums from 'In Requiem' are really good and 'Obsidian' is no exception.

Ragnarok Nattferd
The debut from Ragnarok (Sarpsborg, Norway) is quite a nice effort. This is their most atmospheric record. The sound is great. Lots of reverb, keyboards and some acoustic guitars. Riffs are simple yet not boring.
Ragnarok Diabolical Age
A worthy successor to 'Arising Realm'. Great production, the mix is simply perfect! Guitar harmonies have a strong folk vibe and the blend with satanic lyrics is quite interesting. Underrated album and band.

The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
Great album as usual. "Hero Of The Soviet Union" absolutely slays. "Prancer" is great too. "Nothing's Funny" is really weak with it's terrible "catchy" chorus and generic clean singing though. It's only my opinion, but i would prefer Dillinger with harsh vocals only. Vocals and a pair of pop songs are the sole letdowns here. The album was really worth of buying for me.

Cynic Kindly Bent to Free Us
Pretty strange sounding album. It's also Cynic's most mellow and jazzy one with very unusual "chamber music" feel. But... Two tracks are just great. 'Kindly Bent To Free Us' and 'Holy Fallout'. The magical outro from 'Holy Fallout' is surpassed only by outro from 'How Could I' in my opinion.

If These Trees Could Talk The Bones of a Dying World
A very well crafted album with zero originality. The production is very good. Arrangements are creative (bass could be more interesting). "Solstice" is a very strong opener. It's just that feeling of 'I've heard that before'...

King Diamond The Spider's Lullabye
A solid record with some classic moments. There are 2 things, that drag this album down: 1. Very strange, sharp and harsh production. 2. The line-up is MUCH weaker: Herb Simonsen is just a pale shadow of the amazing Pete Blakk. The same thing goes with Chris Estes and Darrin Anthony. Nevertheless tracks like To The Morgue, Room 17 or Dreams (with killer solo from Andy) are simply stellar.

Obituary Inked in Blood
Opeth In Cauda Venenum
Probably a tad better than the appalling 'Sorceress'. The flow is better, the experimentation is more distinct. Is it their best one since 'Heritage'? Yes, of course, but what kind of the achievement that is? An album of complete silence would be their best since 'Heritage'. Drums and bass are bland and safe. Riffs are C grade prog rock riffs. Vox are good, but I like the old 'medieval' clean singing of Mikael so much better. And finally, Fredrik's guitar solos are simply the worst. Wah driven wanker-masturbation from a drunk jam at the blues club. Thanx.
Opeth Pale Communion
Album sounds like Mikael's side project. Generic, boring prog rock. I was hoping, that Heritage was just a failed experiment. But no, its the same direction. By the way, Steven Wilson's mix is not that good as you might expect. Extremely disappointing...

Terrible production. Disgraceful mix and master with all that pathetic compression and low end, that is WAY too loud. Musically it's the worst Opeth album in all aspects. Everything is so uninspired and bland. Fredrik's solos are just plain shred wankery with a horrible vibrato on every single long note, doesn't fit at all. Will O The Wisp is the only good track.
