| Chvrches have a new fan after Screen Violence embraces a darker, more mature approach to their songwriting. Standouts include the relentlessly catchy "He Said, She Said", the soaring and bleak "Violent Delights", and the sweet "Lullabies". |

| Greywind Severed Heart City |
Here's an incredibly solid pop rock album that has come out of nowhere for me. I wasn't familiar
with Greywind until about four days ago. Apparently this is their second full length album in
nine years. Anyways, I gave a few of their songs a chance and I am pleased to say I found my
first unexpected great album of the year. Severed Heart City is a collection of ten "all killer,
no filler" songs. The Irish duo's songwriting reminds me of Riot-era Paramore while able to get a
little bit darker at times. I would describe the songwriting more generally as smartly written,
catchy, energetic, dynamic, and rather concise in nature. Overall, it's better not to overthink
an album like this. Pop it on for a half hour, find yourself headbanging to "I.K.A.M.F.", catch
yourself singing along to Waterfall's massive chorus, hold yourself for comfort during the
stripped and stirring "The Scarecrow", and don't be surprised when you're itching to start it
over again as "Cope In The Coma" comes to a euphoric and rousing close. Bravo, Greywind. Bravo. |

| Twin Atlantic Great Divide |
Twin Atlantic's Great Divide is a polished, sugary sweet faint attempt by these Scots to land on the airwaves
both at home and across the pond. Tracks like the pretty, piano driven "Ones That I Love", the poignant and
tender "Be A Kid", and the rowdy "Actions That Echo" capture the most attractive parts of the band's charming
brand of alternative rock. However, tracks like "Heart And Soul" and "Brothers And Sisters" come across
sickeningly sweet and feature cliche lyrics that are sure to induce an eye roll or two.
While the record still maintains some of the snappy, creative songwriting found on the band's past releases,
listeners are left in an awkward position listening to a once fresh sounding band subtly caving into the
homogenous trends and songwriting tropes that surround them. It remains to be seen what will happen to
Twin Atlantic as they begin to cross the great divide. Hopefully they won't lose themselves in the process. |
