Julia Holter Loud City Song
All music offered for mass consumption is subliminally comparable/relevant to ALL other music EVER offered. Thus..this offering gets points for creativity and artistic expression, and the expression is arranged and performed quite well. This very Ethereal mood Julia creates and performs here, is entertaining in an interesting/curious manner-initially. After about 15 minutes however...the Ethereal becomes monotone and BORING..the spell she wants us to be enveloped in -is broken. At 35 minutes she finally adds another dimension breaking the monotony..and I'm drawn back into her spiritual, chanting- like, rhythms. rThis change of mood was needed much earlier and should be interposed throughout this long composition. Also-she needs to have such well placed "bridges", display the musicianship of her band-mates ..short solos adding to the mood and helping carry us away. See http://youtu.be/FWRsC8FMULM for a taste of Julia at her best. in short-this release is NOT her best and compared to all the other music ever offered-it rates a 2 of 5. However-her Live broadcast just given link above-is rated 3.8 of 5. If she keeps refining her offerings and takes my advice-I can see her gaining long lasting appeal and a 4 of 5 rating.
