Pixies DoolittleSimple, yet elegant and ingenious. A timeless album that influenced much of grunge, alternative and pop in the 90s.Radiohead Kid AIs this even rock? Is this even music? What the hell is going on?Radiohead OK ComputerBuy it. Now. Seriously, go to the record store and come back, I'll be waiting here.Weezer PinkertonUtterly enjoyable and sonically interesting at the same time. A step up from their debut. Whenever I listen to this, I spend the next few days constantly singing the choruses everywhere I go.4.5 superbMuse Origin of SymmetryFor the most part, extraordinary stuff. Amazing performances (even by Dom Howard, who rarely impresses me in their discography), bizarre solos, bold and heavy riffs and great lyrics (for Muse standards).Pixies Surfer RosaThis would be the greatest album ever if it wasn't for two or three tracks towards the end. It's still amazing though.Weezer WeezerAn extremely pleasant, upbeat and playful album. Other than one or two silly melodies and the guitars sounding a little bland, Weezer's debut is amazing. Strongest Points: My Name Is Jonas, Buddy Holly, Undone - The Sweater Song, Surf Wax America, Say it Ain't So. Weakest Points: No One Else.4.0 excellentBrand New The Devil and God Are Raging Inside MeA very solid, very emotional and very dynamic album, though some tracks can appear generic. The lyrics and guitar work are just amazing. Strongest Points: Sowing Season, Degausser, Limousine (MS Rebridge), Luca. Weakest Points: You Won't Know, Not The Sun, The Archers Bows Have Broken.King Crimson In the Wake of PoseidonA really impressive record, shows great musicianship and virtuosity, a solid album in the King Crimson catalogue. Pictures of a City and In the Wake of Poseidon are great, and Cat Food is one of my favourite King Crimson songs.Muse AbsolutionMetal-influenced alternative rock that shoots for the stars, and mostly delivers. Absolution features powerful riffs, pompous pianos and teary strings. The biggest drawback is the length of some of the more somber tracks. Strongest Points: Time Is Running Out, Stockholm Syndrome, Hysteria, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Thoughts of a Dying Atheist. Weakest Points: Blackout, Falling Away With You.Nirvana NevermindFun, simple and in large part memorable. Even if you haven't listened to Nevermind, you probably know half the songs very well, since Nirvana is one of the biggest bands in rock history. Strongest Points: In Bloom, Lithium, Breed, Polly, Territorial Pissings. Weakest Points: On a PlainSigur Ros ( )Something that frequently pops up in reviews and soundoffs of this album is the connecting of this album to personal experiences of the reviewer, and I don't feel that is the correct way to look at a piece of art. Instead, I think we should focus more on the actual album than on the fact that it's good background music for nice memories. Nevertheless, I do find this album beautifully written and performed, though the strongest tracks are the last two, with the drums having a distinct role in the songs' dynamics.3.5 greatOasis (What's the Story) Morning Glory? This album features Beatles-influenced (or more than influenced) songwriting, pointless interludes and at moments nonsensical blather as lyrics. That doesn't make it any less enjoyable. Strongest Points: Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, Some Might Say, Cast No Shadow, Champagne Supernova. Weakest Points: She's Electric, Roll With It, Untitled (Track 6), Untitled (Track 11).Third Eye Blind Third Eye BlindMeticulously crafted guitar pop, though the songwriting seems restrained in some tracks, often showing very similar melodies and chord progressions. Still, the choruses are very memorable and pleasant, with the album only slightly losing its groove in the last 4 tracks. Strongest Points: Narcolepsy, Semi-Charmed Life, Graduate, How's It Going to Be, The Background. Weakest Points: Thanks a Lot, Good For You, I Want You.3.0 goodMuse Black Holes & RevelationsHere's where Muse started going downhill, this is the first Muse record that desperately tries to sound more grandiose and epic than it needed. The album features a handful of decent songs (Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, Soldier's Poem, Assassin and City of Delusion), some that are only interesting from a compositional standpoint (Knights of Cydonia, Take a Bow), and some that are just banal, uninteresting and tiring (Map of the Problematique, Invincible and Hoodoo).Radiohead Pablo HoneyIt's very clearly not on the level of Radiohead's other albums, but maybe we should stop acting like it's the worst thing ever. Mostly uninteresting, but pleasant nonetheless. Strongest Points: You, Creep, Ripcord, Blow Out. Weakest Points: Thinking About You, I Can't, Vegetable, Lurgee.
