He's one of those dudes I'm supposed to like if I've got any right to call myself a Fan of Music. Surely? At some point in my life I'm going to end up liking Jazz, and turning 50 seems as appropriate as any other. So, when I struck up a conversation with a man and he promised he'd lend me Bitches Brew, I said ... um, yeah, why not... Sure. He gave me Bitches Brew, I gave him Tom Waits 'Outlaws' in exchange. Bitches Brew is quite nice, but dull, very very dull. So, instead, he gave me On the Corner. I was scared, I admit. This could be my last chance to discover age-appropriate music, but the musicians included some of the most boring instrumentalists ever heard, who've been responsible for some of my most terrible nights around people's houses; when they've tried to get me stoned and make me listen to Smooooooth music. Weather Report and the Mahavishnu Orchestra literally make me vomit. Flashback anxiety. However, I needn't have worried. On the Corner is much better: Broken beats, bizarre edits and cuts, a weird selection of instruments, all bolted together in a non-smooth way. Non-smooth is good. The CD booklet even had a guide to what was going on - very funny. There are, inevitably, some long tedious passages of fret-wank and slabs of cheesy keyboards, but I was enthused. Jazz post 1963 might not all be bad.
