Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral

Insanely underrated release. Rivals with The Downward Spiral as the best of NIN in my
opinion. Some truly genius work by Trent at writing melodies and more tuneful, organic music
here. Recalls some of the best moments from The Fragile. I wouldn't call it a compilation
but more of an EP as it contains more new songs than redone old ones. The instrumentals are
all beautifully haunting, maybe a little same-ish in musical structure if you compare one to
each other and hard to get into, but each one has its own feeling and atmosphere. As the
reviewer said, "Leaving Hope" probably stands as the most memorable. "And All That Could've
Been" is a great song and has some of the most gut wrenching lyrics Trent has ever written,
and considering most of Trent's lyrics that's saying a lot. The songs that are done acoustic
in this release are by themselves some of the best cuts from their respective original
albums, add that to the fact that they're redone magnificently here and Trent's giving all
it has in these performances. Considering not only the state Trent was in at the moment but
simply the whole sound, feeling, lyrics and atmosphere this album brings, I would call it a
great "depressive" album, very calm and quiet but still powerful and unsettling. Perfect to
listen to when you're about to go to sleep, returning from a place in the early morning, or
just feeling down and troubled.
