I'm giving this a 5.0. Why? Well, I give out 5.0's to works that I truly feel as legendary. Now here's the issue: I
don't think this is legendary. Good? Yes. Great? I'd say so. But legendary? Not yet. I've listened to a lot of rap in
my experience and I'd say that the two traits that I find omnipresent in quality rap are comfort and
consistency. The charm of York is that it has neither. As rap goes, this album is so experimental that in some
instances I'm jamming out while in others, I'm cringing. I appreciate the courage and the vision used to
produce this album which is why I think it deserves a 5.0. Blu reminds me of EL-P in the sense that neither are
afraid to leave the zone of comfort and try something new. This album is pretty damn unique and has the
potential to be a frontrunner for a whole new brand of frantic, video-gamey, experimental rap. It'll take some
more time for the music community to ripen up to York and its style, but I really do think that in due time,
York will reach a high level of deserved acclaim. Also, cool album cover; I'd love to get it on vinyl. |
