5.0 classic
AC/DC Back In Black
The absolute pinnacle of bluesy hard rock. One of the finest album ever recorded.
Anthrax Among The Living
Arsis A Celebration of Guilt
An absolutely flawless melodic tech death album. One of the best albums you'll ever hear.
Atheist Unquestionable Presence
An awesome death metal album that has awesome extremely technical riffs throughout.
Bathory Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Swedish extreme metal played just about as fast as possible. The soloing is pure insanity. Absolutely fucking amazing album all around.
Black Sabbath Black Sabbath
Black Sabbath Paranoid
Black Sabbath Heaven And Hell
Blood Incantation Starspawn
Starspawn is an absolutely brilliant tech death
album that could stand face to face with Gorguts.
The true masterpiece is the 13 minute opener that
progresses flawlessly from section to section.
Bullet For My Valentine Fever
Candlemass Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
Perfectly crafted, Epicus Doomicus Metallicus features awesome faster paced doom metal with actual high sung vocals.
Cannibal Corpse The Bleeding
Blazing fast death metal that has some really cool machine gun riffs.
Clutch Blast Tyrant
Blast Tyrant is an amazingly catchy and groovy album that will surely entertain for many many listens.
Converge All We Love We Leave Behind
All We Love We Leave Behind is a flawless album. Its better than Jane Doe, and that's not something that should be taken lightly.
Converge Jane Doe
Jane Doe is Deftones meets The Dillinger Escape Plan.
Cormorant Dwellings
This album is like a journey with how many different sounds and tempos it cycles through, even within the same songs. Clearly this album is extremely progressive. The instrumental, Confusion of Tongues, has some of the coolest riffs you'll have heard in awhile. The faster parts of this album were when it was at its best. That's not to say that the slower parts were bad, they weren't, but they just didn't capture the same excitement as the one's that just blast ahead. The vocals also really add a lot to the album. None of the parts are long enough to start to get boring, so this stays sounding new and fresh throughout.
Cormorant The Last Tree
The album starts out amazingly with the first song that just cruises forward at breakneck speeds. The next song is a bit slower, but still very good in its own right. Trojan Horses follows and is a very heavy, and also quite melodic, song. Two Brothers is another really cool fast and extremely progressive song. The final song is the EP's epic and is unsurprisingly good as well. The only minor knock would be that the production isn't as clean as I normally prefer it, only one slight thing, but if there is an album that has to sound muddy, I would want it to sound like this.
Cryptopsy None So Vile
Awesome solos throughout due to their technical nature and the way that they go against the music. Beyond just the solos though, None So Vile is just a downright fantastic death grind album, with the majority of the grind sound coming from the drumming.
Deafheaven Sunbather
Deafheaven New Bermuda
New Bermuda is more metal focused than Sunbather and as a result isn't quite as consistent since there are a couple duller riffs on here. Overall though, still a tremendous album from Deafheaven.
Deafheaven Lonely People With Power
So fucking good. Throwback to the sound of Sunbather / New Bermuda era.
Death Symbolic
Symbolic sees Death flawlessly make a transition to an even more progressive sound. The solos on here are absolutely top notch.
Death Human
Human is a nearly flawless album. It flies by and is done before you know it. There are better records out there, but not all too many.
Death The Sound of Perseverance
The Sound of Perseverance is by far Death's most progressive album. That fact makes this one of Death's best albums in my mind.
Dio Holy Diver
Disembodied Tyrant The Poetic Edda
Disembodied Tyrant/Synestia The Poetic Edda
Dismember Like An Ever Flowing Stream
The riffing on here is just catchy as fuck. Exactly what you'd want from your Swedish death metal.
Disturbed Indestructible
Dr. Dre The Chronic
Some of the absolutely best beats and funkiest bass lines you'll ever hear. Lyrically not the best you'll hear, but it's definitely good enough to make this an absolute classic overall.
Enslaved Ruun
This is some different shit, and its awesome! Its progressive as hell and is like a melodic black metal. The first half of the album is nearly perfect, with Ruun being the best song on it. The album then keeps on going strong through the second half, making this an amazing album. The last track opened with a suprisingly doomy introduction, and went on to kind of sound like a Ghost song; pretty solid way to close out the album. Each and every song has something that makes it special. This is the most fun black metal type of album I've heard.
Every Time I Die Hot Damn!
Hot Damn! No other words needed for this soundoff.
Fallujah The Flesh Prevails
The Flesh Prevails is an interesting technical deathcore album that incorporates some ambiance. I can't really put my finger on why I find this so enjoyable, its just unique and fun to listen to.
Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian
Fantastic instrumentals make up this rather thrashy and progressive album making it stand at a very high place among metal releases.
First Fragment Dasein
The absolute pinnacle of modern technical death metal.
Gojira L'Enfant Sauvage
The Gift of Guilt is one of the best songs ever created. Holy fuck, is it great. L'Enfant Sauvage as a whole is outstanding as well. Stands high right next to The Way of All Flesh as Gojira's defining albums.
Gorguts Colored Sands
The Battle of Chamdo is an orchestral song, with a pretty solid bass line behind it; actually a really eerie and cool song, adds to the album. Overall, this album sounds a lot like a modern retake of Obscura and that is a very very good thing. The only real knock on this is that most of the songs are a bit longer than I typically prefer.
Gorguts Obscura
To liken this to other bands that I have heard I would say its general sound is akin to Morbid Angel with some of the wanky elements of The Dillinger Escape Plan thrown in. The first two are an absolute killer one two punch to start this record out. Pointing this out is by no means saying that the album steps down after this; it kicks just as much ass. One minor thing that I could say is that Clouded is very slow, almost like a stoner song; its good, but I don't know if it really needed to be nine and a half minutes. Again, not a bad song, it may just get a bit old by the end if you're not in the right mindset. I will say that Clouded does work very well in the context of the full album, as it gives you a break from the high speed wankery, making it exciting all over again when it returns in the next song. Its very rare that an album can stay consistently great throughout, but this manages to do it.rFuck, this is an awesome album; its gotta be one of, if not the, best death metal album I've ever heard.
Gorguts The Erosion of Sanity
Not near the excitement of [i]Obscura[i], but that's not necessarily a negative given how great that album was. This sounds more like traditional death metal, housing good catchy riffs. There really isn't a bad song on this album. Overall, don't let the fact that [i]Obscura[i] is better than this make think that this is a bad album, it is far far from it.
Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction
Helloween Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part II
Great instrumentals, great vocals and hooks. Just like Part I, there's a reason that this is considered a classic.
Helloween Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part I
This is like Geoff Tate singing for an epic speed metal band and its fucking awesome!
Igorrr Savage Sinusoid
Savage Sinusoid is one of, if not the, best album I've heard all year. It is a completely unique blend of progressive metal with electronic and classical elements in equal parts. It's so difficult to describe, don't bother trying to figure it out and give it a listen instead, you won't be disappointed.
Immortal Pure Holocaust
Pure Holocaust is exactly what you think of when you think about good black metal. All of the instruments sound great, though the bass is a bit quiet.
Intervals The Shape of Colour
The best instrumental metal album I've ever heard. This is very jazz influenced and technically proficient.
Iron Maiden The Number Of The Beast
Iron Maiden Powerslave
Iron Maiden Somewhere In Time
Iron Maiden Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Judas Priest Screaming For Vengeance
Judas Priest Painkiller
Judas Priest Stained Class
Stained Class is a classic Priest album that has stood the test of time, remaining very good more than 35 years after its release.
Kamelot The Black Halo
This has got some Nevermore/Dream Theater shit going on, but with slightly more emphasis on the vocals.
Kanye West My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Khemmis Absolution
Some very unique epic sounding doom that is clearly heavily influenced by NWOBHM.
Lamb of God Sacrament
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin II
While all of these songs are outstanding, Heartbreaker, The Lemon Song and Living Loving Maid Stand out as favorites.
Led Zeppelin Physical Graffiti
The Rover, In My Time of Dying, Houses of the Holy, Trampled Under Foot, Kashmir, In the Light, The Wanton Song and Sick Again are all songs that are absolutely excellent. That's not to say the other songs are bad, though, as they are good enough to make this Zeppelin's best album as a whole.
Leprous The Congregation
The Congregation is an awesome progressive polyrythmic album that features sweeping vocals and terrific melody.
Lil Peep crybaby
Macabre Dahmer
This is such a goddamn weird album. It is fucking fantastic though. Very technical, very fast, very fun.
Mastodon Leviathan
Mastodon Blood Mountain
Mastodon Once More 'Round the Sun
Once More 'Round the Sun sees Mastodon keep their songs very catchy and melodic, as they were on The Hunter, while improving upon its instrumentals. The instrumentals are quite reminiscent of those on Blood Mountain, with some of the classic Leviathan sound thrown in. While Once More 'Round the Sun does not surpass those two perfect records by Mastodon, it is still outstanding and the best thing to come out this year. Furthermore, it seems like the type of album that will grow on you more the more you listen to it. I'm shocked in the best possible way that this album was able to live up to the exceedingly high expectations I had for it. Ember City into Halloween is absolute perfection, great lead into the longer slower closer.
Mastodon Cold Dark Place
Profgy as fuck. Awesome as fuck. If these guys recorded themselves shitting and released it I'd probably love that too.
Megadeth Rust In Peace
Megadeth Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!
Mercyful Fate Melissa
This album is legendary. There's a reason for that. Melissa is a masterpiece of a classic heavy metal album featuring many great riffs and melodies. I'm normally not a huge fan of songs over 10 minutes, but Satan's Fall is epic and extraordinary.
Metallica Master Of Puppets
Metallica ...And Justice For All
Metallica Kill 'Em All
Morbid Angel Altars of Madness
Morbid Angel Covenant
Motley Crue Saints Of Los Angeles
It's almost unbelieveable that Crue were able to release something as great and catchy as some of their 80's records over 20 years later, especially given that they fell off for awhile.
Motley Crue Too Fast For Love
Too Fast for Love contains some of Motley Crue's grittiest songs while being fantastically catchy.
Motley Crue Shout At The Devil
Ne Obliviscaris Urn
Peak modern prog metal. Akin to a heavier sounding classic Opeth.
Nekrogoblikon Welcome to Bonkers
Welcome to Bonkers is still melodeath at it's core, but it incorporates sounds from other subgenres along the way too. I can't say exactly why, but I just had an absolute blast listening to this album.
Netherlands Audubon
While being doom at its core, Aubudon by no means adheres strictly to that label. Some of the most different doom I've ever heard and one of the best albums that I've heard this year.
Nevermore Dead Heart in a Dead World
To me these guys are kind of like a down tuned, heavier, version of Dream Theater. They are extremely melodic as well. This is a pretty damn great album, all of the songs are really good.
Nevermore This Godless Endeavor
Another really good and progressive album with some great melodic vocals. There are some really incredible solos on here too. Pretty fantastic overall.
New Medicine Race You To The Bottom
Nine Inch Nails The Downward Spiral
Nocturnus The Key
A very technical, light speed, spacey tech death album. The only bad thing I have to say about The Key is that the production isn't very good.
Nocturnus Thresholds
This spacey shit is captivating, but not overpowering.
Omnihility Dominion Of Misery
Technicality for technicalitys sake and it's fucking beautiful. Beyond the technicality, this is absolutely brutal.
Opeth Blackwater Park
The first two songs start the album off terrifically and are extremely progressive. Bleak is absolute perfection, as is this entire album.
Opeth My Arms, Your Hearse
The songs on here are for the most part shorter than songs on Opeth's other records. I think it works perfectly as they create a great creepy concept album that moves along quickly and stays very enjoyable throughout.
Opeth Morningrise
Morningrise is Opeth at their very best. Namely, they play fast almost all of the time and it remains highly progressive. Impeccable record.
Ozzy Osbourne Blizzard Of Ozz
Pallbearer Foundations of Burden
Foundations of Burden takes the great doom sound from Sorrow and Extinction and expands upon it to make an even better epic album. The only real complaint is just that for my personal preference some of the slower parts drag on a bit too long, in turn making the songs overall longer than preferred.
Pallbearer Heartless
Heartless is a fucking beautiful mixture of catchy riffs, hypnotic vocals and well-integrated solos. Pallbearer have taken the excellent sound from Foundations of Burden and drenched it with 70's hard rock/metal influence. While all of the songs are fantastic, Lie of Survival, Dancing in Madness, the title-track and A Plea for Understamding are standouts. It's saying something when half of a great all-around album stands out.
Pantera Cowboys from Hell
Pentagram Pentagram
A very Sabbathy old school doom album that does enough to differentiate itself and be great on its own merits.
Pig Destroyer Terrifyer
Absolutely amazing record. Great mix of hardcore and grind with great energy and emotion throughout. Listening to it simply made my night better.
Poppy Negative Spaces
Possessed Seven Churches
Seven Churches is an amazing, thrashy old school death metal album.
Protest the Hero Fortress
Protest the Hero Volition
Protest the Hero Pacific Myth
Protest the Hero doing what they do, blazingly fast and technical metalcore with beautifully sung melodies. While some may complain that the sound hasn't really changed at all since Volition, I think it's great, as that was by far my favorite of their albums.
Revocation Deathless
Deathless sees Revocation reaffirming their place at the pinnacle of modern thrash metal. This album even manages to surpass last year's self-titled Revocation effort, which is saying a lot.
Revocation Great Is Our Sin
Dave Davidson is a bona-fide metal God and his band
can do no wrong. Closing on a Slayer cover shows
that they would have felt right at home during the
80's thrash movement too.
Run the Jewels Run the Jewels
These dudes are rapping over industrial. What a wonderful world we live in.
Scorpions Love At First Sting
Sepultura Arise
Skid Row Skid Row
Skid Row Slave to the Grind
If you don't think this album is absolutely perfect,
then Get the Fuck Out. Seriously though, this is
better than the amazing self-titled debut somehow.
It is a similar style, but with heavier music. Think
the same kind of riffs with more of a sludgey guitar
tone. This added heaviness does nothing to detract
from the great hooks either. Quicksand Jesus, In a
Darkened Room and Wasted Time slow it down, but
surprisingly stay great. Perfection.
Slayer Show No Mercy
Slayer Reign In Blood
Slayer Seasons In The Abyss
Slayer Hell Awaits
Slayer Haunting The Chapel
Soundgarden Badmotorfinger
This album is all great. So many standout songs on it too.
Suffocation Pierced From Within
Pierced From Within is Symbolic on speed. This means that its some old school, fast, technical death metal. The bass really adds to the mix, making it pretty progressive.
Terrorizer World Downfall
This is absolutely amazing. I don't listen to a ton of grind, but this is by far the best grind album I've ever heard. Pete Sandoval is an absolute monster as well. He already put out a death metal monument with Alters of Madness and now he's done it with grind as well.
Testament The Legacy
Testament The New Order
The Contortionist Clairvoyant
The Contortionist is no longer a metal band. After Language, this is the next logical step outside of returning to more of a metal song, and let me just say, they made the right choice. Clairvoyant is a beautiful soundscape of progressive and ambient music that should not be missed.
The Crinn Shadowbreather
Shadow Breather is a fierce mathcore album that is reminiscent of a more well produced Calculating Infinity.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Calculating Infinity
This album is flawlessly calculated chaos and is not for the faint of heart.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Miss Machine
Not quite as chaotic or perfect as Calculating Infinity, Miss Machine is still a classic album.
Ulver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
Absolutely fucking fantastic folk metal. Best I've ever heard.
Van Halen Van Halen
Van Halen 1984
The reason that this is considered a classic album is that it spawned multiple songs which would be instantly recognisable to just about everyone. However, these songs are not the only reason the album is great, as it does not have a single bad song. Many of the non-classic songs are more like traditional Van Halen, not using nearly as much keyboard or synth, showing Eddie's great talent.
Vektor Black Future
Vektor Terminal Redux
Terminal Reduction kicks as much ass as Black Future, and that isn't something I'd say lightly. Amazing technical thrash that sounds as groundbreaking today as if it had been released 30 years ago.

4.5 superb
2Pac Me Against the World
2Pac shows the human side of thug life with some somber tunes alongside ones about his inevitable demise.
A Day To Remember Bad Vibrations
Catcher than hell, this is what I'd imagine Fall Out Boy would sound like if they were heavier.
Aborted Bathos
The vocals are the same style as pretty much any deathcore band, but they actually sound pretty damn great over a some great grindy and technical death metal.
AC/DC Let There Be Rock
Aeon Bleeding the False
Jesus will not come. I masturbate upon your grave. These lyrics are fucking outstanding. Delivered very well too. The instruments are played better than in most bands with over the top satanic lyrics as well with some of the riffing being quite technical.
Animals As Leaders The Madness of Many
A beautiful, jazzy album that is technical beyond belief. Just like a lot of my favorite technical metal, The Madness of Many sees the bass be quite audible and play an enormous role.
At the Gates Slaughter of the Soul
Atheist Piece Of Time
Really great technical progressive death metal album.
Atheist Elements
A truly incredible jazz fusion album that is extremely progressive as it incorporates an endless number of sounds and genres. Because of the change in style, Elements does not reach quite the level of greatness achieved by Atheist's previous two records, but it is quite remarkable nonetheless.
Autopsy Mental Funeral
Mental Funeral sees Autopsy play two, rather different, sub genres of metal: death and doom. Songs switch back and forth between the genres, sometimes even within songs. For example, they'll surprise you with a death metal solo right in the middle of a doom song. Really unique stuff. The main negative about this album is the muddy sounding production that comes often accompanies doom metal.
Be'lakor Vessels
Vessels is a great very Enslaved sounding death metal album.
Behemoth The Satanist
A pretty cool black metalish album with a lot of ambient shit thrown in. Some of the guitar parts are pretty damn cool.
Between the Buried and Me Colors II
One of the best records so far this year. This might be the kick in the ass I need to check out these guys again.
Black Flag Nervous Breakdown
The only major complaint about this EP is that there isn't enough here. What is here, however, is almost flawless. The title track is one of the catchiest songs I can remember hearing.
Black Sabbath Sabotage
This is an amazing album full of stellar sludgey riffs. Symptom of the Universe is an all time great too.
Bullet For My Valentine The Poison
Cannibal Corpse Tomb Of The Mutilated
An overall great album with great riffs, great bass, and great drums.
Carcass Heartwork
Not quite the masterpiece that everyone makes it out to be, but Heartwork is still a damn good album. The solos on here really stand out.
Carcass Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
A fantastic death metal album that has more to it than can heard on the surface.
Celtic Frost To Mega Therion
Cool riffs being played fast. What's not to like?
Clutch Earth Rocker
Catchy as all hell with some good, entertaining, sometimes technical riffs.
Converge No Heroes
No Heroes is great throughout and is pretty much exactly what you'd want out of a Converge album. The only real negative is that the longest song is the weakest of the bunch.
Converge Bloodmoon: I
Converge The Poacher Diaries Redux
Cormorant Earth Diver
This album kicks ass! Easily one of the best release so far this year, Mastodon is the only one that definitely eclipses it. Upon listening to Cormorant's previous albums, this one sounds quite different. That's not necessarily bad though, because it is still outstanding.
Cormorant Metazoa
Hanging Garden is a bit slower, longer, and more boring than the songs that precede it. It is then followed up by one of the shortest tracks on this album, the song just blazes ahead full speed throughout, making it one of the best that this album has to offer. The faster sections of songs, just as with The Crossing are what make this album so special. The softer sections are still pretty good though, but they typically aren't overly long, something that not many bands like this can say (looking at you Enslaved).
Creeping Death The Edge Of Existence
No wasted time just banger after banger, riff after riff.
Crowbar Crowbar
Cryptopsy Blasphemy Made Flesh
The vast majority of songs on here are absolutely incredible. Not quite at the level of None So Vile, but still damn good.
Cynic Focus
A very good album that sounds like a modernized version of Death.
Darkthrone A Blaze in the Northern Sky
A very cool old school black metal album with a cool dark and earthy ambiance throughout.
Dead Congregation Promulgation of the Fall
A very good death metal album with some slightly technical parts.
Deafheaven Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
This one didn't really hit the mark for me.
Deafheaven have gone even softer than anything of
their previous releases. The last 2 albums had kind
of an emotional resonance that is lacking here,
something that I don't really know how to quantify.
I'll give it a bit of a chance to grow on me, but
this seems like the worst Deafheaven have been since
their debut.

Edit: I kind of missed the mark on this one. While
possibly more subdued than their previous releases,
there certainly still is emotional resonance on
Ordinary Corrupt Human Love. It may still be the
weakest album they've had since Roads to Judah, but
that's not saying a ton given I view Sunbather and
New Bermuda as absolute masterpieces.
Death Individual Thought Patterns
There is absolutely nothing wrong with this album as it stays consistently great throughout. The only slight knock would be that there aren't enough standout tracks, still though, quite a masterpiece.
Death Scream Bloody Gore
A more primitive sounding, but still catchy and entertaining Death album.
Deftones Ohms
After the misstep that was Gore, Ohms is the logical follow-up to Koi No Yokan. Deftones expand upon their spacey/ambient alternative metal sounds in a way that improves on Koi No Yokan. Ohms stands tall alongside Deftones classic albums.
Deicide Legion
A brilliant display of galloping death metal that sounds truly evil.
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Stellar
A stellar fucking black metal album that successfully incorporates a number of subgenres.
Der Weg Einer Freiheit Finisterre
Another terrific black metal album from Der Weg. The best moments are when the music changes from subdued to blasting ahead without a moments notice.
Destruction Infernal Overkill
Infernal Overkill is like a shreddier Show No Mercy.
Destruction Eternal Devastation
Eternal Devastation features great technical shredding riffs and even faster shredding for the solos.
Dio The Last In Line
Though it doesn't Stand as tall as Holy Diver, The Last in Line still has some damn fine songs.
Dissection Storm of the Light's Bane
The best way to describe this would be blackened melodeath. Think awesome, catchy, fast riffs with At the Gates style vocals. Excellent shit.
Dissection The Somberlain
The Somberlain is much more of a black metal focused album than Storm of the Light's Bane. While there are certainly perks to both sounds, I think there's really something to be said about this one.
Disturbed Ten Thousand Fists
Dream Theater Images And Words
An overall very well done progressive album that shows each of the musicians showing off their proficiency while still being somewhat melodic.
Dying Fetus Reign Supreme
Awesome, and sometimes technical, death metal album with really fast, grind type, drums. There's a pretty good amount of groove during the slower parts as well.
Enabler Eden Sank to Grief
Eden Sank to Grief is a hardcore album with a good deal of technicality that still manages to have some sort of melody. In just over 20 minutes, Enabler blast through their songs without pausing, keeping each moment as entertaining as the past.
Enabler Year One
Year One is Eden Sank to Grief with another EP tacked onto the end of it. The second EP is some good technical grinding and Eden Sank to Grief is Eden Sank to Grief. If you don't know what that means, listen to this shit.
Enslaved RIITIIR
This is a really great album. This band seems pretty cool.
Every Time I Die New Junk Aesthetic
A very catchy metal tinged hardcore album from Every Time I Die here.
Every Time I Die From Parts Unknown
From Parts Unknown is a thoroughly entertaining metal tinged hardcore album. One of the top albums through the first half of the year.
Exodus Bonded by Blood
Full of Hell Weeping Choir
Gojira The Way of All Flesh
There are some absolutely amazing songs on here, but as is usual with Gojira there is also some filler. The Way of All Flesh would likely have been flawless had Gojira simply left the filler out.
Gojira Magma
Magma is Gojira's most diverse album yet, and is largely great despite the last few songs being a bit weaker.
Gorguts Considered Dead
This album is more of a traditional death metal album similarly to The Erosion of Sanity. This isn't the masterpiece that some of Gorguts' other albums and is without as many standout tracks, but it is still pretty damn good. This album has tons of great catchy riffs; so, even though it is not their most memorable record, this is still a fantastic one by Gorguts.
Gorguts ...and Then Comes Lividity
This is clearly more raw than any of Gorguts' full length albums. All of the songs are really kick-ass though, so its not too big of an issue; still though, something that, if improved, could improve the overall quality of the EP.
Gorguts Pleiades' Dust
I don't think it's quite as good as Colored Sands, but this is still a damn good EP with the final third being the strongest portion.
Hellbringer Awakened from the Abyss
Awesome throwback thrash that seems like a long lost
early Slayer album, directly pulling influences from
the Show No Mercy/Hell Awaits era.
High on Fire Luminiferous
Luminiferous is High on Fire's most consistent album keeping the songs ripping throughout with
great riffs and shredding.
Ice Nine Kills The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood
Immolation Acts of God
In Flames The Jester Race
The Jester Race is a great melodic death metal album that is less reliant on huge vocal hooks than In Flames' more recent releases.
Inquisition Into the Infernal Regions of the Ancient
This is death metal done in the style of black metal. Whatever the fuck that means. The vocals are croaked and quiet.
Inquisition Ominous Doctrines of the Perpetual Mystical...
This is black metal as it was meant to be. Lots of variation within and between songs.
Inquisition Bloodshed Across The Empyrean Altar...
Inquisition once again deliver a great black metal album full of thrashy riffs.
Inter Arma Paradise Gallows
Paradise Gallows shoes a heavy Neurosis influence, particularly on the excellent title track and Violent Constellations. The later of the two even trails off to sound a bit like Gorguts later on. While there are some great songs, the biggest thing holding this album back may be it's own ambition and grandiosity.
Iron Maiden Brave New World
Judas Priest British Steel
I've always considered this album overrated, which is crazy given that it truly is great. The only real reason that it seems overrated is that it doesn't reach the stratospheric heights that Priest would later see on Screaming for Vengeance and Painkiller.
Judas Priest Defenders Of The Faith
Defenders of the Faith starts off amazing, apart from Rock Hard Ride Free. Most of the other songs are great fast songs that show great usage of both guitarists. Unfortunately, the last three songs slow down, making the albums close quite anticlimatic.
Kanye West Graduation
Kanye West Late Registration
Kanye West The College Dropout
Kendrick Lamar good kid, m.A.A.d city
Most of this album is incredible, from the beats to the flow and lyrics. However, it does lose a bit of steam near the end.
King Diamond ''Them''
"Them" has the same Painkiller sound as all of King's albums, but it keeps all of the songs under five and a half minutes. I think this is a good move as none of the songs get stale like this.
Knocked Loose A Different Shade of Blue
Knocked Loose A Tear in the Fabric of Life
Kvelertak Kvelertak
Lamb of God Ashes of the Wake
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin
I see what the hype is about. Great bluesy rock that is typically subdued, but also has the ability to explode into something much more exciting. It's not just great riffs either, the soloing is just extraordinary.
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin IV
While the two most well known songs are also the best ones, When the Levee Breaks, Misty Mountain Hop and Rock and Roll are excellent as well.
Led Zeppelin Houses Of The Holy
Despite being a softer sounding album, Houses of the Holy still manages to keep my attention. No Quarter, The Crunge and The Song Remains the Same steal the show.
Lil Peep Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 1
Lil Peep HELLBOY
Manilla Road Crystal Logic
Crystal Logic is a cool old school heavy metal album that has shotty production and odd vocals, yet still manages to be terrific.
Mastodon Emperor of Sand
Emperor of Sand is by far Mastodon's most varied release to date, borrowing heavily from the sounds of each of their previous albums, with perhaps the exception of Remission. While all of the songs are very good, standouts are Word to the Wise for its catchy and emotional sounding chorus, the Leviathan-esque Scorpion Breath and epic closer Jaguar God. Containing Mastodon's trademarked riffs and catchy choruses means that this will likely only become better with more listens.
Mastodon Hushed and Grim
Meek Is Murder Algorithms
Algorithms is very intense and technical metalcore through and through blazing through 10 songs in about 20 minutes.
Megadeth Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
Melt-Banana Fetch
Fetch is so fetch. Upbeat and catchy as fuck, although I can never tell what the hell is going on. Some of the shit they pull is pretty weird too, Zero+ for example, what the fuck is that? This is like Nine Inch Nails on cocaine but all Japanese and weird.
Mercyful Fate Don't Break The Oath
Don't Break the Oath is a tremendous Maiden-esque album with a few amazing songs. Unfortunately, there is a slight lull during the middle of the record.
Meshuggah Destroy Erase Improve
This is actually rather unsettling. Its absolutely captivating though as each song is of the highest quality. The solos are all very odd, but very good as well.
Metal Church Metal Church
This is a great rippin thrash album from the unholy Church.
Metallica Metallica
Metallica Ride The Lightning
Miles Davis Kind of Blue
This is the first jazz album I've listened to and I rather enjoyed it. All of the background bass lines were terrific. The brass instruments played with a good rythym flowing perfectly from note to note.
Miles Davis Bitches Brew
Some very good jazz with awesome jazz guitar mixed in. It sometimes trails off into slower less appealing stuff though.
Misery Index The Killing Gods
The Calling is a really entertaining song, kind of odd that they made their first five songs
all flow together as if they were one though. I couldn't really even tell that they were
different songs, that's not necessarily a bad thing, I just wish they had make it one long
song instead of splitting it up. Conjuring the Cull picks up right where The Calling left
off, right after the short interlude. Honestly, I kept expecting this album to drop off, but
it never did. Overall, this is a very heavy and very fast album that also manages to be quite
melodic.
Motley Crue Dr. Feelgood
Mutoid Man Bleeder
Some great clean sounding metalcore. Clean covers the vocals as well, which are at times quite melodic.
Mutoid Man War Moans
A strange but awesome mixture of Converge-esque technicality and insanity with vocals that sound similar to many radio rock/metal bands throughout.
N.W.A. Straight Outta Compton
Good beats with some hard hitting lyrics. Ice Cube's deliveries are all perfect, while everyone else's can be somewhat hit and miss.
NAILS Unsilent Death
This is pretty damn cool. Can't really think of anything that sounds like it. Its like a blazing fast crossover of extreme metal and hardcore.
NAILS Abandon All Life
Really kickass album, but all the songs are so short that it sometimes seems that they end just as they're getting to the best point. That really doesn't hinder the album though, just wish there would be a little bit more. The music that is here, though, is nearly flawless.
Necrophagist Epitaph
Just a great tech death album. The solos on here are ridiculous.
Necrophagist Onset of Putrefaction
This is a great tech death album with absolutely amazing guitars on riffs and solos alike.
Neurosis Given To The Rising
On Given to the Rising, Neurosis have crafted a vast dark and creepy doom album where the vocals just add to the feel. Some of the ambient sections could almost be used as a horror film soundtrack. Also, some of these riffs are fat as fuck.
Nevermore The Politics of Ecstasy
This is no doubt a Nevermore album. Pretty cool, almost industrial sounding, songs with Loomis' face melting solos.
Nile Annihilation Of The Wicked
Annihilation of the Wicked is an awesome brutal tech death album.
Nine Inch Nails The Fragile
Not quite as good as The Downward Spiral, but still an amazing album. Not the best album to listen to in one sitting though.
Oranssi Pazuzu Mestarin Kynsi
Psychedelic black metal that is at its best when it's at its craziest. My only real issue is that some of the acoustic openings take too long to get to the good stuff.
Origin Antithesis
Holy fuck this is fast. The hyperspeed technicality makes this album amazing, just what you'd want out of the fastest tech death possible. The closer, Antithesis, turns down the brutality a notch that really isn't the best pick to close out the album.
Pangaea (USA) Vespr
Pantera Vulgar Display of Power
Periphery Periphery II: This Time It's Personal
Philm Fire From The Evening Sun
Fire From the Evening Sun is experimental and progressive as fuck, and it sounds great. It's good to see Dave Lombardo still putting out good music instead of just releasing shit and fading out of the public eye.
Pink Floyd The Dark Side Of The Moon
There's a subtlety to this album that makes me wonder how this became a classic. I envoy it, but it took a long time listening to progressive metal to get to this point. To me, the best parts are when Floyd are less subdued and when the sounds of the instruments and samples are all beautifully layered over each other.
Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
An amazing progressive album. The subdued parts go on longer than I'd like, I understand wanting the songs to build, but this album is by far at it's best after it explodes open.
Polyphia New Levels New Devils
One of the best instrumental (mostly) albums I've heard in a while.
Polyptych Defying the Metastasis
Defying the Metastasis is an excellent and carried technicely death metal album that sees a large black metal influence, bits of doom and even some acoustic sections. While it is nice that this isn't just an hour long walk session, the best parts are still the most technical ones.
Power Trip Nightmare Logic
A damn fine crossover album with a more varied tempo than you may expect.
Primus Frizzle Fry
This starts off funky as fuck, after jokingly opening with a Rush segment. Not a bad track throughout the first half of this album. The second half has three tracks that are under a minute long and are interludes. I never like interludes, it usually just seems to me that they're trying to make it longer for no reason. In addition to that, the songs on the back half of the album are not as consistently as great as on the front. With that said, the actual songs were still fairly entertaining. The lyrics seem really weird, they're kind of funny though. While the bass is always what is talked about with this band, I feel that the guitar is actually the component most vital to these songs being so good. Not knocking the bass by any means, as it is obviously great and funky throughout.
Protest the Hero Kezia
Protest the Hero Palimpsest
PTH have always been a great band, but they've REALLY been on it since Volition. Palimpsest is another terrific album that reaffirms PTH's foothold as one of the best metal bands currently in the game.
Pyrrhon Growth Without End
This is essentially deathcore with Gorguts style wanking done to great effect. The biggest knock on this is that its too short.
Queensryche Operation: Mindcrime
Repulsion Horrified
A fantastic old school grindcore album that could have been even better with better production.
Revocation Revocation
Rush A Farewell To Kings
Scale the Summit V
One of the best instrumental albums I've ever heard. Some stellar melodic vocals could obviously improve this, but more likely the addition of vocals wouldn't fit the awesome polyrythms and flourishes.
Scorpions Blackout
Some of my all time favorite Scorps songs being here, along with not having a single bad track makes Blackout a superb album.
Siege Drop Dead
Conform is an absolute standout. Cold War is excellent as well. Grim Reaper is a really weird song that has a lot of things going on, sax included, over a pretty cool bass and drum beat. Other than that, just a phenomenal, short, concise grindcore album. Only thing holding this back from a 5 is that it is way too short, even by grind standards.
Slayer South Of Heaven
Sleep Dopesmoker
Sleigh Bells Texis
Slipknot Iowa
Slipknot Slipknot
Snoop Dogg Doggystyle
Cool beats and smooth flow. Some songs are a bit weaker near the end.
Sodom Persecution Mania
A very solid thrashy album with almost sludgy sounding riffs.
Son of Aurelius Under a Western Sun
Absolutely awesome instrumentally, being quite progressive. The vocals add a ton to this album and are truly great. I'd say this gives Cormorant a run for their money for best album to come out so far this year.
Strapping Young Lad City
This is a really frantic and awesome album. Tracks 2-8 are pretty much all awesome.
Suicidal Tendencies Suicidal Tendencies
System of a Down Toxicity
System of a Down Mezmerize
Testament Dark Roots of Earth
Thank You Scientist Terraformer
The Black Dahlia Murder Ritual
The Black Dahlia Murder Nocturnal
The Black Dahlia Murder Unhallowed
First few songs slay. Only dud is Hymn for the Wretched.
The Black Dahlia Murder Nightbringers
Black Dahlia by the numbers. Not that that s a bad thing. A couple of these are catchy as all fuck.
The Black Dahlia Murder Verminous
The Contortionist Exoplanet
An excellent showcase of technical deathcore with hints of ambiance hidden throughout the album's best songs. Quite progressive as well.
The Crinn Dreaming Saturn
The more deathcore sounding moments are ok but nothing special. However, the other complex jazzy sections more than make up for that.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Under the Running Board
To rate this as what it is instead of what it isn't, it is a very good EP signaling what would come from The Dillinger Escape Plan.
The Dillinger Escape Plan One of Us Is the Killer
The Dillinger Escape Plan Option Paralysis
Option Paralysis is another perfectly calculated album from The Dillinger Escape Plan. However, it is so we'll calculated that it loses some of the appeal for the frantic nature.
The Faceless Akeldama
Extremely technical album. First three songs rip. Just really enjoyable.
The Sword Apocryphon
The Sword Gods Of The Earth
Tool Undertow
A lot of very good and catchy songs on here with none of them really feeling like filler.
Tool Ænima
Overall a very cool and trippy album, although I don't really know what makes it so good. The only thing is you kind of have to be in the mood for this specific type of music going into it.
Tribulation Where The Gloom Becomes Sound
Awesome black and roll album with some great catchy riffs. Funeral Pyre being like a heavier version of the Dio We Rock riff is a highlight.
Ulthar Providence
I like cool machine gun riffs. This has a bunch of them. Nice.
Vattnet Settler
Settler is some of the most upbeat, happiest sounding black metal that you'll hear. Think
Sunbather but without the shoegaze. This brand of black metal is quite technical as well.
Whitechapel Hymns in Dissonance

4.0 excellent
$uicideboy$ The Long Term Effects of SUFFERING
AC/DC Highway To Hell
AC/DC High Voltage
Agalloch The Mantle
The vast majority of this album is too slow and
ambient for my liking. The faster and heavier
songs kick ass though, with I Am the Wooden Doors
being a standout along with ...And the Great Cold
Death of the Earth. Edit - fuck off old me. This
isn't a 3/5
Agalloch The Serpent and the Sphere
After more listens, I can say that the interludes are quite nice in the context of the album. Also, after further listening, and seeing Agalloch live, I've realized that there are some pretty solid songs on here. One thing that I will say though, is that, while a good song, Plateau of Ages goes on a bit longer than it should, being the longest song on the album.
Agalloch Ashes Against the Grain
Overall a pretty solid ambient metal album. A few tracks are kind of boring though and just more ambient than anything.
Alice in Chains Black Gives Way to Blue
Black Gives Way to Blue stays interesting throughout by varying everything from tempo to heaviness and melody. Acid Bubble stands tall next to Check My Brain as the album's high points, and that's saying something because I fucking love that song.
Amon Amarth Deceiver of the Gods
Anciients Heart of Oak
Anciients Voice of the Void
Voice of the Void is a very good album that draws influence from many great progressive metal bands. While it isn't aso string as much of Opeth's work, it still shows Anciients talents when it comes to both writing and playing songs. Hopefully these guys continue forging ahead because theyes have a chance to be something special.
Animals As Leaders Parrhesia
Anthrax Worship Music
Anthrax Spreading The Disease
Anthrax For All Kings
A fantastic followup to Worship Music! Catchy riffs and choruses mean that this will probably get better with more listens too. Not all songs are huts, but overall an excellent release, especially for a band that's been around for 30 years.
Atheist Jupiter
Another strong effort from Atheist that sees them step even a bit further from their death metal sound.
Autopsy Severed Survival
Severed Survival is a very good album, but I can't get into it the way I feel I probably should.
BABYMETAL Metal Galaxy
Bang Camaro Bang Camaro
Baroness Red Album
Baroness Yellow And Green
Baroness Purple
Purp starts off dank as fuck for the first two songs rwith some great sludge riffs and melodic choruses rbut then levels off into more average sounding rBaroness.
Baroness Gold And Grey
Between the Buried and Me Colors
Between the Buried and Me Alaska
Between the Buried and Me The Parallax II: Future Sequence
Weird album, as is to be expected by BTBAM. Good though.
Between the Buried and Me Coma Ecliptic
Like all Between the Buried and Me albums, there are some great moments along with some that are mediocre at best. Unfortunately, that means that they have still not learned when enough is enough. Simply trimming some of the fat off this record may have been enough to turn it into something special.
Black Crown Initiate Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape
While it doesn't quite hit the same highs, I certainly understand the comparisons to classic Opeth.
Black Crown Initiate Selves We Cannot Forgive
Good technical death metal with a a few catchy hooks.
Black Flag Damaged
Despite the second half of the album being somewhat weaker as a whole, it is still not bad given that the songs are all so short. Six Pack, What I See and No More highlight the album.
Black Sabbath Master of Reality
Black Sabbath Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
The second half of the album really gets this going after the first half struggles after the opener. With that said, even struggling isn't too bad for Sabbath.
Black Sabbath Mob Rules
It makes sense that Dio left for a solo effort after this album, as it is the first time that Sabbath's instrumentals are overshadowed by the vocals. That's not to say that the same great Sabbath riffs are absent, as they are still there; however, some of them seem to stagnate a bit given they take a backseat. Mind you, this stagnation is only on a couple of songs, meaning it is still a great album.
Blind Guardian Nightfall In Middle-Earth
This is a very unique album, I'm glad not all albums are like this but its cool since its different. On here you'll find some solid dark fantasy sounding power metal.
Blood Incantation Hidden History Of The Human Race
Bolt Thrower Realm of Chaos
Realm of Chaos is an extremely solid deathgrind album that just doesn't have quite enough to make it stand out.
Boris Noise
An interesting mixture of dissonant guitars and almost pop sounding vocals make this album truly unique. The first track sees the vocals implementing an abundance of melody (as its name would imply), but the band sadly goes away from this on the rest of the album. Songs approaching 20 minutes are far too lengthy for my liking, however that doesn't hinder the album as a whole too much. Variety is really the key here; too many bands like this release albums where the songs pretty much all sound the same. Boris escapes this by effectively using tempo shifts from song to song.
Bullet For My Valentine Scream Aim Fire
Calm Hatchery Fading Reliefs
Fading Reliefs is a very good death metal album that absolutely floors with its technical solos.
Candlemass Death Thy Lover
30 years after the masterpiece Epicus Doomicus Metallicus, Candlemass manage to have another very good release. Commendations for that.
Cannibal Corpse A Skeletal Domain
Another excellent album from Cannibal Corpse that is technical, groovy and, of course, heavy.
Cannibal Corpse Kill
Kill is a very cleanly produced Cannibal Corpse. Some of the songs are a bit generic sounding, but overall a very good effort from the Corpse.
Cannibal Corpse Torture
A good album by Cannibal Corpse that doesn't quite reach the lofty heights of some of their best work.
Carcass Surgical Steel
Another great album by Carcass filled with tons of awesome fun riffs. Its not quite as good as some of their older albums, but it is still highly entertaining.
Cattle Decapitation Monolith of Inhumanity
Very good, sodmetimes technical deathgrind that isn't quite as melodic as their new album.
Cattle Decapitation The Anthropocene Extinction
While this album certainly has its flaws, it is overall a very solid deathgrind album that manages to be quite melodic.
Celtic Frost Morbid Tales
Morbid Tales is Venom infused with a shot of doom and better production.
Chimaira The Impossibility of Reason
CHVRCHES Screen Violence
CHVRCHES Love Is Dead
Closure in Moscow First Temple
PTH-lite. I really like the technicality and there are some decent hooks.
Cloudkicker Live with Intronaut
This is an excellent progressive instrumental album that surely would have been great to witness in person.
Clutch Psychic Warfare
Still some awesome simplistic metal, in the same vein as Earth Rocker. I think this style has grown on me more since that release though. Love the somewhat raw sound on this album.
Converge Axe to Fall
Not even nearly on the same level as All We Love We Leave Behind or Jane Doe, Axe to Fall still manages to be pretty good in its own right. The opener is by far the best song.
Converge You Fail Me
You Fail Me is a moody, almost ambient, feeling hardcore album that is very enjoyable to listen to.
Converge When Forever Comes Crashing
When Forever Comes Crashing is clearly an earlier Converge album, as it lacks some of the excitement brought forth by some of their later records' technicality. However, since it is a Converge album, its still does manage to be very entertaining.
Converge Beautiful Ruin
Crowbar Zero And Below
Cryptopsy Cryptopsy
Cryptopsy's self titled record has their trademarked insanity along with breakdowns galore. It works very well together.
Cryptopsy Whisper Supremacy
While not quite as good as Cryptopsy's other albums, Whisper Supremacy is still a great display of technical wankery. The only real difference is that it isn't at as breakneck of speeds as the first two.
Cryptopsy The Book of Suffering - Tome 1
Absolutely brutal with hints of technicality. Almost like the Cryptopsy of old.
Cryptopsy The Book of Suffering - Tome II
Cryptopsy An Insatiable Violence
Cult of Luna A Dawn to Fear
Cynic Traced in Air
A very technically proficient album that is also very fun to listen to. However, there were too many slow songs for my liking.
Cynic Kindly Bent to Free Us
Kindly Bent to Free Us is quite different from Cynic's two previous full length albums, as it is more of a prog rock album. While this may keep it from being as great as those two records, it still manages to be a great listen, in large part due to its melodic nature.
Cynic Traced In Air Remixed
Danny Brown Atrocity Exhibition
Dark Angel Darkness Descends
Darkness Descends is extremely fast thrash. It may have benefited from more variety by having some songs that aren't just rapid speed for the sake of being rapid speed.
Dark Angel Time Does Not Heal
Time Does Not Heal is a pretty solid thrashy death metal album.
Deafheaven Infinite Granite
Death Leprosy
Still more primitive than much of Death's discography, Leprosy adds a more technical aspect to Death not seen in Scream Bloody Gore.
Death Grips The Powers That B - Part II: Jenny Death
Jenny Death is a terrifically entertaining album featuring some catchy unconventional sounds with rapping over the top. Essentially, think Nine Inch Nails, but with rap.
Decrepit Birth Diminishing Between Worlds
Nothing too groundbreaking, but still pretty kickass spacey sounding tech death.
Decrepit Birth Polarity
Another solid tech death album from Decrepit Birth. However, not enough is done to make it elite as it isn't even able to step out of the shadow of its predecessor.
Deftones Koi No Yokan
Deftones White Pony
Deicide Deicide
Deicide Once Upon the Cross
Badass satanic death metal. Not all of the songs are incredibly interesting, but they're so short it doesn't really hinder the experience. I think the short album length works to Deicide's benefit here, as they are just able to get in do their thing and get out.
Deicide Serpents of the Light
Pretty much what you'd expect from Deicide. Another solid album that doesn't really take many chances.
Dethklok Dethalbum III
Dethklok The Dethalbum
Dio Dream Evil
While not as memorable as Dio's first two solo efforts, Dream Evil is still an entertaining album, highlighted by Naked in the Rain and Overlove.
Disembodied Tyrant The Tower: Part One
Disembodied Tyrant The Divine Stigmata
Disembodied Tyrant Eclipse, Pt. 1
Disturbed The Sickness
Down NOLA
Down Down III: Over the Under
Down Down IV - Part I
Down Down IV - Part II
Another kick ass album from Down. This thing is packed with a ton of awesome heavy riffs as is to be expected. One of my favorite releases so far this year.
Dream Theater Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
Dream Theater Awake
There are songs that are great on here, regardless of how you listen to them. However, there are also songs that shine their brightest in the context of the full album.
Dream Theater Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
This album should have probably just been the second part, the 8 part song, as the first 5 songs are never really able to get off the ground. However, can't knock the score just because Dream Theater is giving us extra for our money.
Dying Fetus Destroy the Opposition
Really cool combination of tech death and grindcore. Some pretty catchy things in here too. Overall, a very solid album.
Dying Fetus Descend into Depravity
Another fast and entertaining album from Dying Fetus that seems to be more technical than what came before it.
Electric Wizard Time to Die
Overall a pretty good trippy doom record. Nothing too special though.
Electric Wizard Dopethrone
A very heavy plodding doom album that creates a dark feeling. The main thing working against this album is that a few of the songs go on longer than they should, thus becoming boring.
Electric Wizard Come My Fanatics...
Five of the six songs are great heavy doom that is terribly easy to headbang to, with Doom-Mantia being my favorite. The odd song out is Ivixor B/Phase Inducer which is a minimalistic trippy noise song. While it does have some interesting parts, two minutes would have been more than enough, so being over eight minutes is way too long. As is with any doom, it may drag on too long in general for some, but I was quite entertained throughout, save for that one track.
Electric Wizard Supercoven
The riffing on the title track is not as thunderous as one may expect from Electric Wizard, but it is still excellent when the soloing starts and the pace seems to increase a bit in the second half of the song. I also like that there are vocals for more of this song than their typical song. The second and final song, Burn Out isn't that thunderous either, but is very uptempo from the start. The songs second half transitions into a much trippier section, though it is still quite good given that it occurs over a solid doom riff. Two songs clocking in at around a half hour sees the problem of Electric Wizard somewhat over staying their welcome dissipate a bit as the short time doesn't allow for that to happen.
Emperor In the Nightside Eclipse
This is some pretty solid black metal that uses keyboards to create an eerie ambiance.
Enabler All Hail the Void
All Hail the Void is slightly sludgy metalcore in the same vein as earlier Converge.
Enabler La Fin Absolue Du Monde
New Life almost has a Mastodon feel to it, as do some of the other songs actually. I definitely understand what the other soundoffs have been saying about the production not being very good, making the album worse than it could have been. With that said, the songs are still pretty fucking awesome, just wish the sound wouldn't be so muddy. I'd imagine that this would sound pretty killer live. Overall, pretty good thrashy technical hardcore album that is somewhat lacking in consistency in the second half.
Enabler Shift of Redemption
A sludgy, muddy metalcore/hardcore EP from Enabler. Awesome.
Enslaved Axioma Ethica Odini
Pretty good album overall. Raidho was the only real standout though. Most of the other songs were kind of indistinguishable.
Enslaved Hordanes Land
This sounds a lot more like traditional black metal than Enslaved's later records, but it is still somewhat similar and quite good.
Enslaved In Times
In Times is certainly an Enslaved album. It sees them following the path they've been taking on recent records towards being slightly more progressive. However, this time it isn't quite as exciting given that everything on here is more or less what you'd expect it to be.
Entombed Left Hand Path
An interesting mix of Sweedish death metal and doom metal.
Every Time I Die Ex Lives
A very good, albeit a bit straightforward, hardcore album from Every Time I Die.
Every Time I Die The Big Dirty
Every Time I Die doing what they do, albeit not quite as well as on some of their other albums.
Every Time I Die Low Teens
A good hardcore album, though I feel that ETID's best work is more technical than this.
Eyehategod Take as Needed for Pain
Fallujah Dreamless
Dreamless is basically part 2 of The Flesh Prevails. It is still pretty damn good, but since there isn't any more evolution in the sound this time around, it just isn't quite as fresh and exciting.
Fallujah Empyrean
Fates Warning Theories of Flight
Fleshgod Apocalypse King
This is an awesome mix of sounds. I guess I'd describe it as symphonic industrial metal. Some of the symphonic parts are actually quite pretty while most of the metal is some good pounding stuff with nice guttural vocals.
Fleshgod Apocalypse Veleno
Full of Hell Garden of Burning Apparitions
Gatecreeper An Unexpected Reality
Ghost (SWE) Impera
Giant Squid The Ichthyologist
A really weird but chill progressive post metal album.
God Macabre The Winterlong
The Winterlong is an excellent sludgy death metal album.
Gojira From Mars to Sirius
There are a lot of really great songs on here, but there are also a lot of pretty average ones. I think this album would have benefited from being cut down a bit.
Gojira The Link
The Link is a very good and fast tech death album from Gojira.
Gorguts From Wisdom to Hate
This isn't as special as Gorguts' previous releases, but is still a pretty kickass one nonetheless.
GosT Valediction
He Is Legend Heavy Fruit
Heavy Fruit is a rather upbeat sounding post-something album that is actually quite enjoyable.
He Is Legend few
Another good and relatively catchy post-metal album from He is Legend.
High on Fire Blessed Black Wings
High on Fire Snakes For The Divine
High on Fire Art Of Self-Defense
Hollywood Undead American Tragedy
Hypno5e Shores of the Abstract Line
Overall a very good progressive album that sounds like the lovechild of Gojira and The Ocean. Some of the shit did miss the mark for me, though having the interludes and samples not in English actually created a good effect.
Ice Cube AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted
While not as strong as his work with N.W.A., Ice Cube's first solo record still has some strong lyrics rapped well.
Ice Cube Death Certificate
Some more hard hitting aggressive from Ice Cube. I think the second half is slightly stronger, but it's solid all around.
Ice Nine Kills The Silver Scream
Ice Nine Kills The Predator Becomes the Prey
Igorrr Spirituality and Distortion
In Flames Colony
In Mourning Garden of Storms
In Solitude Sister
Inanimate Existence A Never-Ending Cycle of Atonement
Overall a very solid tech death album, however none of the songs really stand out.
Inanimate Existence Clockwork
Inquisition Obscure Verses for the Multiverse
With Obscure Verses for the Multiverse, Inquisition reaffirms their position near the top of modern black metal.
Inquisition Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer
Magnificent Glorification of Lucifer is a much more straightforward black metal album than most of the ones Inquisition puts out. With that said, it still manages to be quite groovy and entertaining.
Inquisition Invoking the Majestic Throne of Satan
Although it is produced like shit, this album contains some good thrashy black metal.
Inter Arma The Cavern
The Cavern is a sludgy progressive epic contained to one single 45 minute song. I personally would prefer to have the song split up into separate songs, but still flow together. Hard to complain too much though cause it's still pretty damn good.
Internal Bleeding Corrupting Influence
Some damn good grooves on here, but my overall enjoyment was hurt a little by the production.
Intervals A Voice Within
The instrumentals on here are very good, showcasing the band's proficiency without being pointlessly technical. The vocals add a lot as well, helping to make this a very catchy album that will likely become better upon more listens.
Intervals The Way Forward
While this is certainly a good album, I couldn't help but feel like something was missing. I don't know if that something is a vocalist, or if I just feel that this would be better as a game soundtrack, or something along those lines. Additionally, by the end some of the songs end up sounding a bit samey. I don't mean to sound overly critical, but I guess that just shows how highly I regard The Shape of Color.
Intervals Circadian
Intronaut The Direction Of Last Things
A solid progression for Intronaut which sees them take the technicality up a step.
Intronaut Valley Of Smoke
Really cool mixture of sludge and ambience. Only knock is that some of the songs and riffs extend on for too long.
Iron Maiden Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden Piece Of Mind
Iron Reagan Worse Than Dead
Cool fuckin' crossover album. I could see it growing on me with more listens too.
Iron Reagan The Tyranny Of Will
Iron Reagan returns with another thoroughly entertaining crossover album. They clearly know what they're doing as the length is perfect, not leaving you wanting more, but never boring you.
Iron Reagan Crossover Ministry
While Crossover Ministry is probably the weakest Iron Reagan album to date, it's still an absolute joy to behold. It has some political lyrics, but, honestly, who gives a fuck?
Jinjer Duél
Job For A Cowboy Sun Eater
Sun Eater is a welcome change of direction for Job For a Cowboy. JFAC used to just be a shitty deathcore band, but now appear to be more progressive and technical, largely due to the outstanding performance from the bassist.
Judas Priest Sad Wings Of Destiny
Judas Priest Killing Machine
Killing Machine sees Priest pivoting to more of a chorus focused band than before. It works quite well, as shown by the sing along hook in Take on the World. It still has great musicianship though, shown through in Hell Bent for Leather, one of my favorite all time Priest songs.
Kamelot Haven
This is some pretty good somewhat progressive power metal that has a very dark mood to it.
Katatonia Last Fair Deal Gone Down
A great dark atmospheric rock/metal album with sometimes powerful sometimes cheesy lyrics.
Kendrick Lamar To Pimp a Butterfly
A very solid all around album by Kendrick, although the second half seems to be much stronger than the first. The lyrics are very much a social commentary, largely having to due with racial issues. The lyrical content is very powerful, even to a white kid like myself, so I can only imagine what these songs would mean to people that can relate to them.
Khemmis Deceiver
Atmospheric NWOBHM with modern production and without hooks.
King Diamond The Eye
The Eye is yet another great album by King Diamond that doesn't quite reach the same greatness as the 'classics.' With that said, it is a unique take in the old King Diamond formula as it is quite atmospheric.
King Diamond Conspiracy
Conspiracy is a vocal driven concept album with instrumentals akin to Painkiller era Priest or early Ozzy. The solos are generally the standout musically.
King Diamond Abigail
Abigail is some great 80s metal with incredible soloing. Just a step ahead of Conspiracy.
Knocked Loose Laugh Tracks
Krisiun Forged in Fury
There's some good material and some kind of boring material. Overall impressive, especially considering its just three people.
Kvelertak Meir
Kvelertak Splid
First half was better IMO due to the shorter track times of straight up upbeat hardcore, but the second half's longer songs are certainly more eclectic in nature, as you may expect from Kvelertak.
Kvelertak Nattesferd
Still as undefinable as ever, Kvelertak's most upbeat album is another great one.
Lamb of God Resolution
Leprous Malina
While I'm not crazy about the increased focus on vocal melody as opposed to the instrumentals, Malina is still a damn fine album.
Leviathan Scar Sighted
Scar Sighted is a very good black metal album that is very clearly influenced by a number of other genres as well.
Mac Miller Swimming
Mac Miller GO:OD AM
Machine Head Unto The Locust
Unto the Locust is a great album full of epics. The instrumentation is top notch as is the melody.
Machine Head The Blackening
An excellent thrashy album that shows off Machine Head's technicality. However, it is a little overindulgent as most songs last too long for their own good.
Machine Head Bloodstone And Diamonds
Bloodstone and Diamonds is yet another Machine Head album with some incredible instrumentals. This one also adds quite a few songs with catchy hooks for good measure. However, it is not perfect. It just feels like they've taken it too far with a few of the parts; they kind of seem cheesy. Overall though, another good album that Machine Head fans will surely enjoy.
Mars Red Sky Apex III - Praise For The Burning Soul
The stoned, trippy brother of Ghost. Pretty entertaining.
Mastodon The Hunter
Meek Is Murder Everything Is Awesome Nothing Matters
This is straight in your face metal core that doesn't waste any time, fitting all 13 songs within 20 minutes.
Megadeth Youthanasia
Megadeth Endgame
Megadeth Countdown To Extinction
Megadeth Cryptic Writings
Melvins Lysol
Opener Hung Bunny is rather slow and plodding, getting boring well before the 10+ minutes are up. The next song, Roman Bird Dog, absolutely slays ass. From there on there is a slight dip back down, but overall this is some nice doomy goodness.
Meshuggah Chaosphere
Overall, Chaosphere is not of the same quality as Destroy Erase Improve, but still has some very good material on it.
Meshuggah obZen
obZen is Meshuggah's best album since Destroy Erase Improve.
Meshuggah Koloss
Overall, a slightly slower album from Meshuggah. The second and third tracks are the best through the first half of the album, while 8 and 9 highlight the back half.
Metallica Garage Inc.
Morbid Angel Blessed Are the Sick
Morbid Angel Domination
The first two songs get this album started very well. Really good album all around, though the second half of the album sees a significant dip in quality. The two shortest songs are interludes, which aren't that bad when in the full album context.
Motorhead Ace Of Spades
Motorhead Overkill
Motorhead 1916
Municipal Waste Slime And Punishment
I've typically thought of Iron Reagan much more highly than Municipal Waste, this album, however, may help MW be on the road to overcoming that. While not as blazingly fast or hardcore as IR, this is slower (relatively speaking) and has more of an old school thrash feel to it.
Nachtmystium The World We Left Behind
The World We Left Behind is an emotional sounding black metal type of album that is quite entertaining, but loses momentum on the tail end.
NAILS You Will Never Be One Of Us
Nails doing what they do with another great riff/groove based grind album that is one again all too short.
Napalm Death Harmony Corruption
Harmony Corruption is a heavy as fuck deathgrind album.
Napalm Death From Enslavement to Obliteration
Fast as fuck. It's a grindcore album, there's not really much more about it that needs to be said.
Napalm Death Apex Predator - Easy Meat
Napalm Death now seem to be more of a hardcore sound than in the past, and that is a very good thing as this is the best album to be released to this point of the year.
Nas Illmatic
Good beats and good flow. I'm sure this is somewhat lost on me given that I didn't see how groundbreaking it was upon initial release.
Ne Obliviscaris Citadel
A very solid album with great instrumentation that really has no downside.
Necrophobic Mark Of The Necrogram
Solid black metal with some good thrashy riffs. Better production than much black metal which is a plus for me.
Necrot Blood Offerings
Excellent OSDM with some technicality in the riffing, but not just technicality for technicality's sake.
Necrot Mortal
Nekrogoblikon Heavy Meta
Heavy Meta is great catchy melodeath from Nekrogoblikon.
Nekrogoblikon Power
Neurosis A Sun That Never Sets
A Sun That Never Sets is a very cool ambient album that sets the tone with all sorts of unconventional instruments.
Neurosis Times Of Grace
Times of Grace is a sludgy doom album with a good amount of ambiance that sometimes even sounds industrial. This shit is also extremely experimental.
Neurosis The Eye Of Every Storm
The Eye of Every Storm sees Neurosis striking an excellent balance between ambiance and pounding doom. Once again though, some of the buildups can be a bit long for personal taste.
Neurosis Enemy Of The Sun
Enemy of the Sun is a pretty typical Neurosis album in that it has plenty of great moments while also having its fair share of duller buildups.
Neurosis Pain Of Mind
Pain of Mind is a very good hardcore album from Neurosis that has more metal style instrumentals. Love the bass on here.
Neurosis Souls At Zero
While the highs on Souls at Zero are not quite as high as on some of Neurosis' later albums, it is more concise and too the point.
Neurosis Fires Within Fires
Neurosis made a good call on cutting this album down shorter than usual. It still has everything that makes them great, but doesn't drag any of the ambient sections on for too long. This means that more of the time in this album is spent on heavier riffs which have always been when Neurosis' best quality.
Nevermore Enemies of Reality
This seems like a more straightforward Nevermore record; it lacks some of this band's best traits, but still manages to be alright. Very dark atmosphere throughout this entire album.
Nile Those Whom The Gods Detest
Good sweepy tech death that sees the songs extend a bit longer than they really should.
Nile Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka
A solid album that is very distinctly Nile by the ambient tracks and sweeps.
Nine Inch Nails Broken
Pretty solid EP, but the shorter songs are unnecessary in my opinion. This is Nine Inch Nails through and through.
Nine Inch Nails Pretty Hate Machine
Overall this is a pretty enjoyable album from Nine Inch Nails
Nine Inch Nails With Teeth
Really fun album. I really enjoy Nine Inch Nails but I'm not sure why.
Nocturnus AD Paradox
Obituary Slowly We Rot
Slowly We Rot isn't the flawless record that some make it out to be, but it is certainly nothing to sneeze at either.
Obscura Akróasis
Some pretty good death metal that shows that the musicians are all very proficient with their respective instruments. I just wish they would have gone even crazier with it.
Opeth Watershed
Another great album by Opeth. There are more softer parts in this than in some of their best works, but they are better than Opeth's lighter passages typically are.
Opeth Still Life
Excellently technical and progressive from the beginning. However, some of the songs are too long for their own good, as parts get boring by time they are over. Namely, the slower acoustic portions; they weren't bad, but by the time the tempo changed they had gotten a bit old. Serenity Painted Death absolutely kills. The first two and the last two were definitely the best.
Opeth Damnation
Normally I would absolutely hate that this is a strictly softer album, but Opeth manages to make it work quite nicely.
Opeth Ghost Reveries
Another good Opeth album filled with progressive epics.
Origin Omnipresent
Omnipresent is unmistakably Origin is it has their trademark brutality and technicality in abundance. While it doesn't reach the same level of greatness as Antithesis, it is still quite good.
Origin Unparalleled Universe
It's pretty much what you'd expect. They do slow it down on a few songs, but slow for them is still a pretty good pace. Djjal was my favorite song.
Origin Abiogenesis - A Coming into Existence
Origin Chaosmos
Orthodox A Door Left Open
Ozzy Osbourne Diary Of A Madman
Ozzy Osbourne No More Tears
Aside from Road to Nowhere, the second half of the album is considerably weaker than the first and could have been trimmed by a couple of songs. With that said, No More Tears is still a very good album containing a number of classic Ozzy songs.
Pallbearer Fear and Fury
Everything Pallbearer has done thus far has been great, and this is no exception. Only the first song is an original, but it all seemed fresh to me as I hadn't heard the other two songs before.
Pantera The Great Southern Trendkill
Paradise Lost The Plague Within
The Plague Within consists mostly of groovy ambient doom tracks with a few faster songs that sound almost like Amon Amarth or Enslaved.
Paradise Lost Obsidian
Pig Destroyer Prowler in the Yard
Really entertaining album throughout. The songs are really short so they stay fresh and new, but there are some that I wish would have been longer.
Pig Destroyer Phantom Limb
While songs on Phantom Limb are generally longer than and not quite exciting as those on Pig Destroyer's two previous albums, it is still very entertaining.
Pig Destroyer Head Cage
Good groovy grind. About what you'd expect from Pig Destroyer.
Poppy I Disagree
Primus Sailing the Seas of Cheese
Jerry Was A Race Car Driver is a clear standout. Tommy the Cat is really good too. It seems quite unnecessary to have three interludes on this album, but that doesn't detract from it too much. Overall, this is a pretty cool album. Primus is a weird fucking band.
Primus Green Naugahyde
Some of these songs are pretty cool, but its a bit hard to listen to this album for the full 50 minutes. While the songs are good, and, in my opinion, not too similar to each other, every song is extremely weird. Thus, this album would probably be best listened to in segments.
Red Fang Whales And Leeches
Revocation The Outer Ones
Revocation Netherheaven
Rivers of Nihil Monarchy
Monarchy is very solid technical death (core).. .......................
Rivers of Nihil Where Owls Know My Name
Having an album with a variety of different sounds can easily backfire. However, Rivers of Nihil are able to go from deathcore to more groove oriented metal to progressive shit that includes a saxophone with a good level of success. A very varied but very high quality album.
Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 2
Run the Jewels RTJ4
Rush 2112
2112 (the song) is an absolute masterclass progressive rock. The rest is more run of the mill, but still entertaining in it's own right.
Rush Hemispheres
Scour Gold
Senses Fail Pull the Thorns from Your Heart
This is a solid ambient hardcore album that seems to convey the emotions that this dude is feeling quite well. Artsy shit.
Septicflesh Codex Omega
An excellent mix of extreme metal with other orchestral instruments.
Sepultura Beneath The Remains
Sepultura Schizophrenia
Slayer Christ Illusion
Sleep Leagues Beneath
Sleep Theory Afterglow
Pretty decent for what it is, which is butt metal.
Soen Tellurian
A pretty good progressive effort that sounds rather similar to Opeth.
Soundgarden Superunknown
There are a lot of really good songs on this album.
Spirit Adrift Chained To Oblivion
A cool doom album that brings Pallbearer to mind, which of course is a good thing. Impressive that it was all just one guy.
Spiritbox Tsunami Sea
Strapping Young Lad Alien
Pretty decent album, doesn't seem as melodic as earlier Strapping Young Lad, namely City. Almost more of a djent sound to it as well.
Strapping Young Lad Strapping Young Lad
All of the songs on here are quite solid, but many of them sound the same, and there are no real standouts.
Strapping Young Lad The New Black
Another really cool album from Strapping Young Lad. The New Black is at its best when the songs are extremely fast, but the more melodic portions are good as well.
Suffocation Breeding the Spawn
Shitty production really drags this down. Otherwise a very good and technical sounding album. The bass goes HAM on here.
Testament The Gathering
Testament Practice What You Preach
Testament The Formation of Damnation
The Atlas Moth Coma Noir
Excellent atmospheric sludge. Very reminiscent of High on Fire at times.
The Black Dahlia Murder Abysmal
Abysmal has some sweet catchy riffs and hooks, just as you'd expect from a BDM album.
The Body and Thou You, Whom I Have Always Hated
A very cool and enjoyable post-doom collaboration album.
The Contortionist Language
Technical as fuck and more of an atmospheric soundscape than The Contortionist's other albums.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Irony Is a Dead Scene
A very disturbing and very good EP from The Dillinger Escape Plan.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Ire Works
Not as frantic as the previous two albums, housing some rather annoying glitchy electronic sounding segments.
The Dillinger Escape Plan Dissociation
Most of the songs have a very One of US is the Killer vibe to them. It's not necessarily a bad thing, however, I think TDEP will always be at their best when they are playing their oldschool schizophrenic, technical style.
The Faceless Autotheism
Not as good as The Faceless' first album, but still a very good showing.
The Faceless In Becoming a Ghost
Not crazy about the prevalence of clean vocals, but the instrumental part of this is sweet. The weird shit added in is alright but I could take it or leave it.
The Ocean Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
The Ocean Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic
The Sword Warp Riders
The Sword Age Of Winters
Thou Magus
Heavy doom with a great groove to it. The volume seemed really low to me, don't know if that's how they meant it to be or if it was just weird on Spotify but I wasn't a fan.
Thy Antichrist Wrath of the Beast
This is what I was expecting and hoping for from last month's Tribulation album. Black 'n roll that blacks as well as it rolls.
Tool Lateralus
A pretty entertaining extremely progressive album. You kind of have to be in the right mood to listen to it though.
Torche Harmonicraft
The thicker sludge of Meanderthal gives way to spacey ambiance while not completely abandoning the sludgey sound. Harmonicraft is generally a rather upbeat album as well.
Torche Meanderthal
Mastodon-y at some times and thick and sludgy at others, Meanderthal incorporates a number of different sounds to be a great album.
Torn The Fuck Apart A Genetic Predisposition To Violence
I'm not a fan of the production on here; calls to mind old-school Suffocation and Cryptopsy. That's too bad because if you can look past that this is some damn fine death metal.
Tribulation The Children Of The Night
The Children of the Night sees a variety of different metal and rock sub genres mixed fluidly into
one for a very entertaining listen.
Trioscapes Digital Dream Sequence
Digital Dream Sequence is a very unique and awesome album that is more jazz than metal. The bass really drives this, making it quite progressive.
Turnstile Never Enough
Ulcerate Stare Into Death and Be Still
Post-death metal. Interesting listen. 50 characters
Ulver The Assassination of Julius Caesar
It's surprising to hear the band that made my favorite all-time folk metal album back in the 90' just released an electronic prog-pop album. What's more shocking is that it's actually good. If it had a darker tone, you could probably convince me that Trent Reznor had something to do with it. If that isn't an endorsement of quality, I don't know what is. So Falls the World is the best track.
Uncle Acid and The Deadbeats The Night Creeper
The Night Creeper is some very cool Sabbathy doomph that would likely sound even better live.
Van Halen Women And Children First
Some great songs like Romeo Delight, Loss of Control and Take Your Whiskey Homes are slightly held back by a couple of boring songs.
Vektor Outer Isolation
Velvet Revolver Contraband
Voivod Synchro Anarchy
Voivod The Wake
This is to old-school thrash as Gorguts is to death metal.
Walk the Moon Talking is Hard
Walk the Moon releases yet another solid indie-pop album that once again features a lot of extremely catchy songs.
Witchfinder General Death Penalty
A pretty solid album that sounds almost like a mixture of Sabbath and Cream.
YOB Clearing The Path To Ascend
Clearing the Path to Ascend is a slow plodding doom album with enough else going on to stay entertaining.

3.5 great
A Day To Remember You're Welcome
Abigail Williams Walk Beyond The Dark
There's definitely some good ambient black metal to be found here, but too many of these songs just outstay their welcome.
Abiotic Casuistry
Causistry is a mixture of awesome technicality and mediocre deathcore. The more clean technical parts are clearly what make this good, although the majority of the album is plagued by some of your typical deathcore bullshit.
Abysmal Dawn Nightmare Frontier
AC/DC Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
Agalloch Marrow of the Spirit
The longest song got a bit too long for my liking, there were some pretty cool parts but also a lot of pretty dull ones; but other than that, the album is pretty solid as long as the first and last tracks can be considered the intro and the outro respectively.
Agnostic Front Cause For Alarm
Agoraphobic Nosebleed Arc
Good dirty sludge. A lot of solid riffs for being just a three song EP.
Alcest Écailles De Lune
Its shoegaze and that's really all there is to it. The first three songs stomp the second three.
Alice in Chains The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
Alice in Chains Alice In Chains
It is important to have a strong opening track, but that can sometimes be a two edged sword. That is the case with this self titled album given that Grind is not only a strong opener, but easily the albums best song. That means that the listener is left waiting for that high point the rest of the album. That isn't to say that there aren't other good songs, as ones like Sludge Factory, Heaven Beside You and So Close certainly fit that bill. The issue is that many of the other songs are so strikingly mediocre, examples of these are Brush Away, Shame in You and Frogs. Normally having an average song or two wouldn't be as bad, but when there are a greater number on an album as long as this one it can begin to be problematic.
Alien Weaponry Tangaroa
Allegaeon Proponent for Sentience
While this is certainly a good album, it is hard not to be a bit disappointed by it. Allegaeon is clearly a talented band, shown through their genius flashes of technicality and melody; however this fact brings upon disappointment when much of this album is quite mediocre. The title track for example, the last part is the only worthwhile one, while the first two do nothing other than artificially lengthen the already good length album. Hopefully they can fully get together and release something truly special in the future.
Allegaeon Damnum
Amon Amarth With Oden on Our Side
Amon Amarth Jomsviking
Clearly Amon Amarth throughout, but there is enough variety to keep it from getting old.
Anthrax Persistence Of Time
Arsis Visitant
Artificial Brain Infrared Horizon
Very fast, wanky tech death. I should love this, but it just seems a bit sterile, for lack of a better word.
At the Gates At War with Reality
Better than I expected after hearing all of the negative reactions. If you can get past the fact that this isn't Slaughter of the Soul 2, it's a rather enjoyable listen.
Autopsy Puncturing the Grotesque
I was a little concerned when the title track sounded very death n roll. However, after that Autopsy return to their signature death n doom style.
Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare
Avenged Sevenfold The Stage
While The Stage is clearly an Avenged Sevenfold album, it sees them experimenting with their sound a bit on a few songs. These songs, ones like Sunny Disposition and Exist, are when this album is at its best. The rest of the songs are fine, but they feel samey compared with the rest of Avenged Sevenfold's discography.
Baroness Blue Record
Behemoth Demigod
An overall solid black death album that doesn't really do anything too exciting.
Behemoth Opvs Contra Natvram
Between the Buried and Me The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues
This falls below many other efforts from BTBAM. The first song didn't do much for me, the other two were more entertaining but nothing too special.
Between the Buried and Me Between the Buried and Me
Pretty solid album, sounds pretty different than all of their later stuff.
Beyond Creation Algorythm
Black Flag Jealous Again
Pretty entertaining EP, but not as good as their first one. The first two songs on here are definitely the best.
Black Sabbath 13
Black Sabbath Vol. 4
Another pretty good album from Sabbath. While Vol. 4 lacks the standout songs held by their first three albums, it is still pretty solid.
blink-182 Nine
Handful of absolute bangers surrounded by mediocrity. Worth a listen or two to see what your bangers are.
Bloodbath Grand Morbid Funeral
A thoroughly enjoyable death metal romp with suspect production.
Bloodbath The Arrow of Satan Is Drawn
Bloodbath Survival of the Sickest
Bongzilla Weedsconsin
Boreworm Black Path
Pretty solid debut from Boreworm. I'll keep an eye on these guys as continue to release new material.
Brendon Small Galaktikon II: Become the Storm
Same Dethklok sound, now with 100% less Dethklok. It seems to lack the obscene over the top nature of the albums ?by? Dethklok, fortunately, the music is able to stand on its own.
Cannabis Corpse Left Hand Pass
Come for the weed puns, stay for the dope death metal. Not the best around, but actually pretty solid, especially for a band who you might expect to be a straight gimmick.
Cannabis Corpse Nug So Vile
Cannibal Corpse Violence Unimagined
Carcass Symphonies of Sickness
The production on here is significantly worse than on Carcass' future albums and that really hinders it in my opinion. Despite the poor production, Symphonies of Sickness still manages to be a fairly entertaining death grind album.
Carcass Swansong
Swansong is a very odd album by Carcass as it is simply more accessible rock and hard rock tunes played in the style of death metal, a strange but gratifying combination.
Carcass Torn Arteries
Cattle Decapitation Death Atlas
Chimaira Crown of Phantoms
Chimaira Pass Out of Existence
Overall pretty fun groove/nu metal. Frontloaded with best songs so back half can drag in places.
CHVRCHES Every Open Eye
CHVRCHES The Bones of What You Believe
Clutch Clutch
This self-titled effort sees them using a few different sounds from dirty to spacey while still remaining undeniably Clutch. Most of the songs on here are quite catchy as well.
Clutch Robot Hive / Exodus
The highs on Robot Hive/Exodus are almost as high as in Blast Tyrant, however, unlike Blast Tyrant, this one has some songs that are kind of duds.
Clutch Book Of Bad Decisions
About what you'd expect from Clutch nowadays. I didn't find the choruses as good as the last couple albums though.
Coheed and Cambria The Color Before The Sun
Overall a cool album with quite catch vocals and some cool kind of proggy riffs. Island is absolute fire.
Converge Petitioning the Empty Sky
Converge has a lot of better albums but Petitioning the Empty Sky is pretty entertaining nonetheless.
Converge The Dusk in Us
I think they are at their best here when they are the most polar. Both the songs with a breakneck tempo and their much much slower counterparts are stellar. The songs that fall somewhere in the middle tempo-wise seem stale to me.
Cormorant Diaspora
Cormorant's weakest album to date, in my opinion. However, don't confuse that as a condemnation of Dispora; rather, take it as a sign of how truly great this band has been and will likely continue to be.
Corrosion of Conformity Blind
Blind is a very unique album with a sound that's difficult to describe. To attempt to describe it anyway, it is a sludgy sounding crossover of hard rock and hardcore.
Crowbar Symmetry in Black
Solid album. A lot of cool riffs throughout and there is good variety in the speed of the songs.
Crowbar The Serpent Only Lies
A sludge album that's as heavy as any which typically has a slow pace, but quickens up considerably for a few songs.
Cult of Luna The Raging River
Cult of Luna The Long Road North
Cynic Carbon-Based Anatomy
This is a very short EP, especially given that half of the songs are an intro, an interlude, and an outro. The actual songs, however, are actually pretty good. Generally not as good as the ones on Cynic's full length albums, but still are quite fun to listen to.
Dark Angel Leave Scars
Leave Scars is a solid technical thrash album from Dark Angel. The main rip on this album, and really Dark Angel in general, is that the songs are just too long.
Deafheaven Roads To Judah
Deafheaven/Bosse-de-Nage Split
Death Spiritual Healing
Spiritual Healing is fairly lackluster, at least by Death's standards. Overall its still pretty good though, especially in the solos department.
Decapitated Anticult
Ditching the technicality and going for a sound akin to a heavier Machine Head produced a good album despite not being what anyone expected.
Decrepit Birth Axis Mundi
I used to always think of Decrepit Birth as a tech-death band, but in reality they are more of a progressive death metal. On that note, Axis Mundi is pretty good, being straight forward death metal for the most part while showing their technicality during their progressive segments.
Deftones Diamond Eyes
Deftones Deftones
Deftones Around the Fur
Deftones Adrenaline
Deftones Gore
Gore is a decent album, but the lack of Deftones' typical aggression hurts it a good deal.
Deicide Overtures of Blasphemy
Destroyer 666 Wildfire
Solid album. Some pretty good riffs and obvious influences from a lot of metal subgenres.
Dethklok Dethalbum II
Devin Townsend Project Transcendence
Transcendence is a progressive metal album that sees it's melodic traits progress as the album does. Many of the longer songs should have been cut down a bit and it could have done without all the callbacks to the SYL days. Overall though, a good album that is at it's best when it is the most progressive.
Downfall of Gaia Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay
Aeon Unveils the Thrones of Decay is a ridiculous name; however, it is also a very cool, darkly ambient black metal album.
Dream Theater Dream Theater
Dream Theater Train of Thought
While Train of Thought isn't among the best releases in Dream Theater's catalog, it is still pretty good.
Dying Fetus Infatuation with Malevolence
The vocals leave a lot to be desired. The production on here isn't all that great either. It is good for what it is, but if you go into it expecting anything more than a collection of demos, you will likely be disappointed.
Dying Fetus Killing on Adrenaline
This is a fairly entertaining groove oriented death metal album.
Dying Fetus Wrong One to Fuck With
The blazing fast technicality found in parts of this album are absolutely amazing. Unfortunately, there are a lot of slower less technical parts that I feel fall flat as none of the grooves are really infectious enough to resonate.
Earl Sweatshirt Sick!
While there are only a couple songs that I'd listen to individually, I think this album is greater than the sum of its parts, being a (mostly) chill sounding record that is very "of the times."
Eazy-E Eazy-Duz-It
I like Eazy-E's voice in short spurts, however I found that it got a bit grating being the primary voice over the entire record. With that said, there are still definitely some great lyrics and solid beats found on here.
Enslaved Utgard
Enslaved Vertebrae
The first two tracks start out a bit dull, not bad, just nothing that good. Ground picks up that slack a little. New Dawn is a really fast and kick ass song too. I wasn't a big fan of the ambient droning riffs, as it just gets a tad stale to me. Overall, I think this album is lesser than the sum of its parts. While the songs are generally pretty good, most of them seem to drag on too long for their own good and struggle to distinguish themselves from the rest of this album's songs. Probably better listened to as just individual songs once in awhile as opposed to consecutively as an album.
Enslaved Below the Lights
Pretty good album, but the songs are kind of hard to differentiate.
Every Time I Die Radical
Exhumed Necrocracy
A pretty solid thrashy deathgrind album. Nothing special though.
Exhumed Horror
Exmortus Slave to the Sword
Exmortus Ride Forth
Individually each song is an entertaining display of modern technical thrash. However, none of them do enough to differentiate and stand out against the others.
Exmortus The Sound of Steel
Solid Viking thrash with some neoclassical guitar sprinkled throughout.
Exmortus Legions of the Undead
Eyehategod Dopesick
Eyehategod In the Name of Suffering
Solid Eyehategod album. Not really much else to say.
Faith No More Sol Invictus
Sol Invictus is a decent alternative metal album that sees the band exploring a variety of different sounds.
Fallujah Nomadic
The middle track is completely unnecessary; a strictly ambient song in an EP this short seems out of place. The other two songs are pretty good though.
Fuck the Facts Desire Will Rot
This is a pretty solid grind album with some really good tracks. Unfortunately, some of the longer tracks can start to drag on though.
Gatecreeper Deserted
Ghost (SWE) Opus Eponymous
Ghost (SWE) Meliora
Once again Ghost releases a very cool album that throws it back to 70's hard rock.
Ghost (SWE) Prequelle
Ghost Bath Starmourner
Ghost Bath draw heavy influences from Deafheaven. I'm totally fine with that since I love Deafheaven but as is usual, it doesn't come close to the greatness of its influence.
Ghoul Hang Ten
Really entertaining thrashy album. Not much that's too special about it, but it is quite interesting how they don't just play thrash and have some different sounding stuff even within the same songs. Kreeg and Sidehackers were highlights for me.
Giant Squid Minoans
Not really enough going on here to keep me interested. Not a bad album, but I'd expect better out of Giant Squid.
Giraffe Tongue Orchestra Broken Lines
Bands like GTO never live up to the unrealistic expectations set by fans. While Broken Lines is a good album, it is not the technical progressive masterpiece that everyone hoped it would be.
Goatwhore Constricting Rage of the Merciless
Constricting Rage of the Merciless is somewhat like a fusion of thrash and death metal that has a lot of groove, making it pretty easy to get into.
Goatwhore Angels Hung from the Arches of Heaven
Godflesh A World Lit Only by Fire
Overall a really solid industrial album that's a bit top heavy.
Godflesh Post Self
Post Self is full of some really cool and surprisingly varied discordant stuff. I think this could make a really cool game soundtrack.
Godsmack The Oracle
Gojira Terra Incognita
Although different sounding than their other albums, Terra Incognita is still a distinctly Gojira album. It lacks in standout songs though.
Gojira Fortitude
While this is a pretty logical next step from Magma, I just can't see myself getting as excited about this type of stuff when compared to what Gojira was doing 10 or so years ago.
Gorod A Maze of Recycled Creeds
The technical flourishes and jazzy sections are what make this for me. Other than that it's rather mediocre, somewhat proggy death.
GosT Rites of Love and Reverence
Guns N' Roses Chinese Democracy
Guns N' Roses G N' R Lies
Halestorm The Strange Case Of...
Harm's Way (USA-IL) Isolation
High on Fire De Vermis Mysteriis
High on Fire Electric Messiah
Hirax Immortal Legacy
Hollywood Undead Swan Songs
Ice Nine Kills Last Chance to Make Amends
Immolation Atonement
Atonement is definitely an entertaining death metal album, but there's not enough here for it to really step out above the crowd.
In Flames Clayman
In Flames Siren Charms
Not nearly as bad as these fuckers are saying. It's clearly not great, but it's the logical follow up to Sounds of a Playground Fading. Everyone just needs to stop being so butthurt that In Flame's isn't going back to the traditional death metal sound found on earlier albums like Colony.
In Mourning Afterglow
Pretty solid progressive melodeath. Some may like that relative subtlety to In Mourning's progressive elements, but I think it would be better if they were more in your face.
Inquisition Nefarious Dismal Orations
Nefarious Dismal Orations is more or less a straightforward black metal album that still manages to change things up here and there. Its done well, but frankly isn't anything to write home about.
Insomnium Heart Like a Grave
Inter Arma Sulphur English
Inter Arma Garbers Days Revisited
Intronaut Prehistoricisms
Post-metal usually isn't a genre I'm particularly fond of. Prehistoricisms doesn't do much to change that, but is pretty good as far as the genre goes. The Reptilian Brain would have benefited from being split into the four separate pieces, as it begins too boring for too long before finally getting better later on.
Intronaut Habitual Levitations
While a cool technical post-metal effort, Habitual Levitations lacks the explosiveness found on Valley of Smoke.
Intronaut Fluid Existential Inversions
Iron Maiden A Matter Of Life And Death
Iron Maiden Killers
Iron Maiden Senjutsu
Iron Reagan Spoiled Identity
Iron Reagan Dark Days Ahead
Iron Reagan/Gatecreeper Split
Judas Priest Sin After Sin
Judas Priest Firepower
Jungle Rot A Call To Arms
Kalmah Palo
Kanye West The Life of Pablo
Kanye West is a mad fucking genius. There are a good number of songs on here that I typically wouldn't really consider 'real songs' but since it's Kanye it just works for some reason.
Kataklysm Of Ghosts and Gods
A decently catchy death metal album that isn't anything too special.
Kataklysm Meditations
Katatonia The Fall of Hearts
There's nothing objectively bad about this album, but I personally got a bit bored with it being over an hour of softer tunes. If you can get behind this type of music, you'll surely love this record.
Katatonia City Burials
Kendrick Lamar Section.80
A more chill album than I'd personally prefer, but still entertaining nonetheless.
Kendrick Lamar Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers
Khemmis Desolation
This dude sounds a lot like Warrel Dane. Fuck your
50 characters.
Killer Be Killed Killer Be Killed
There are some pretty good songs on here, but a lot of songs sound kind of generic too.
Killer Be Killed Reluctant Hero
Killswitch Engage Atonement
About what you'd expect from a new KSE album and that's fine by me. Some good hooks means it'll
probably get better with more listens too.
King Diamond Fatal Portrait
Fatal Portrait is some good speed metal with great shredding and cool chorus' and vocals all around by King. However, not all of the songs are able to maintain the greatness that some have.
King Parrot Dead Set
Dead Set is a type of hardcore deathgrind that incorporates a decent amount of melody. There are a number of fantastic songs on this album, however it is not able to stay great throughout.
King Parrot A Young Person's Guide to King Parrot
Korn The Path of Totality
Korn Korn III: Remember Who You Are
Korn The Serenity of Suffering
One of the better Korn albums in awhile. It has all the catchy hooks and crunchy riffs you'd expect from them, with some riffs inspired by non-nu-metal as well. Since it is Korn though, that also means that some of the lyrics are absolutely abysmal, but that can be overlooked.
Korn The Nothing
Kreator Pleasure to Kill
Kreator Gods of Violence
Gods of Violence is an interesting album in that most of the riffs aren't actually that catchy. The choruses, however make up for that, typically having solid hooks and taking on an Amon Amarthy sound at times.
Krisiun Apocalyptic Revelation
An album that's produced like shit, has awesome guitars, especially when shredding, and has drums that don't match up well a lot of the time.
Lamb of God VII: Sturm Und Drang
This is a Lamb of God album. Whether that's a good or bad thing is a matter of opinion, but the band largely stays with what we'd expect.
Lamb of God New American Gospel
Lamb of God Wrath
Lamb of God As the Palaces Burn
Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin III
This is a primarily acoustic album. Some of the songs are actually really entertaining for acoustic, some are kind of boring though.
Lil Aaron 808 ROCK
Lil Peep Everybody’s Everything
Lorna Shore Immortal
Macabre Carnival of Killers
In a genre that's typically overly serious it's kind of refreshing to have an album this quirky. It can sometimes take it to far though.
Machine Gun Kelly Mainstream Sellout
Machine Head Of Kingdom And Crown
While the lyrics are cringeworthy, there are just enough cool riffs and vocal hooks that I?ve enjoyed so much in modern Machine Head to make it a worthwhile listen.
Mastodon Crack the Skye
Mastodon Remission
Mayhem Daemon
Meek Is Murder Mosquito Eater
Meek Is Murder come onto the scene with a strong, albeit less technical, metalcore album.
Megadeth So Far, So Good... So What!
Megadeth Dystopia
For the first time since Endgame, Megadeth has released an album with some actually quality songs. Not all of them are good, and I think Dave should have trimmed it down a bit, but overall a vast improvement over the last two shit storms he put out.
Megan Thee Stallion Fever
Melt-Banana Bambi's Dilemma
Bambi's Dilemma sees Melt-Banana fusing quick Japanese punk with random sounds. Its fairly entertaining, though nothing too spectacular.
Melvins Bullhead
Bullhead is a solid dissonant sounding sludgy doom record.
Melvins Houdini
Houdini is a heavy sludgy sounding grunge/metal fusion with a decent amount of experimentation. The best songs had to be the faster, punkier ones.
Melvins Basses Loaded
A solid Melvins album that doesn't have the same sludge as the classics. Their rendition of Shaving Cream is golden.
Melvins Pinkus Abortion Technician
Good distorted rock album. Definitely not as heavy
as older Melvins, but I think that works in it's
favor.
Melvins Working with God
Melvins Bad Mood Rising
Meshuggah Catch Thirtythree
An unremarkable, but good, Meshuggah album that lacks the abundance of exciting moments of some previous records and rides the ones it does have for much longer than is necessary.
Meshuggah Nothing
Another Meshuggah album that has good stuff on it, but just loses some of its appeal by beating each and every part into the ground.
Meshuggah The Violent Sleep of Reason
Meshuggah has always been one of those bands that I need to be in the mood for to really enjoy. Despite being entertaining, there albums of theirs that I would definitely turn to first when in said moods.
Meshuggah Immutable
Metallica Death Magnetic
Metallica Hardwired...To Self-Destruct
Hatfield sounds great on here. Other than that there are some Metallica sounding riffs; some sound like they could fit in on AJFA and others on the black album, while others would be more at home on Death Magnetic were it slowed down. It's a good album with some songs that I'm sure would be fun live, but as with any band 30+ years in its not all quality. Honestly, I think this would have a higher average score if it wasn't Metallica, and therefore held to such high standards.
Ministry Moral Hygiene
Monuments (UK) The Amanuensis
The Amanuensis is a melodic progressive djent album that sounds very similar to Periphery. There are some pretty good grooves and catchy melodies.
Morbid Angel Kingdoms Disdained
Morbid Angel's best album in over 20 years. Unable to reach the older albums, but certainly better than I expected.
Mortiferum Disgorged from Psychotic Depths
Motley Crue Girls, Girls, Girls
Not as deep of an album as Motley Crue's classics, there are still a couple of iconic songs on here and a couple other pretty good ones as well.
Motorhead Motörhead
Motorhead Iron Fist
Motorhead Another Perfect Day
Motorhead Bastards
Motorhead Inferno
Municipal Waste Hazardous Mutation
Napalm Death Throes of Joy in the Jaws of Defeatism
Napalm Death Scum
This is some seriously weird shit. Some pretty good music that would probably sound better if played slower. Nonetheless, a decent grind album.
Nekrogoblikon The Fundamental Slimes and Humours
Nekrogoblikon Goblin Island
Nekrogoblikon Stench
Netherlands Black Gaia
Better than most noise I've heard, I think it's because it has more structured songs.
Neurosis Through Silver In Blood
Through Silver in Blood is a dark somewhat psychedelic post doom album. There is definitely some good material on here, but a lot of the songs are a bit slow getting to it for my liking.
Neurosis Honor Found In Decay
The best way I can think of to describe this is as post-doom that uses doomy instrumentals to craft vast soundscapes. It is done fairly well, though I feel it would have been better served to shorten some of the songs.
Neurosis The Word As Law
While probably Neurosis' weakest album, The Word as Law is still a pretty good punky doom or doomy punk album with some ambiance.
Nevermore Dreaming Neon Black
Changes between rapid speed, pounding, progressive metal to seemingly out of place ballads. The ballads aren't that bad, but they just don't seem like they belong on here at all. The riff during the chorus of Poison Godmachine is absolutely killer.
Night Demon Curse Of The Damned
Curse of the Damned is a modern throwback to the metal that dominated the 1980s. It is executed quite well with some entertaining riffs and catchy hooks.
Nile In Their Darkened Shrines
There are some really nice pieces of tech death on here. However, Nile often overdo the Egyptian sound, dragging the album down considerably.
Nile What Should Not Be Unearthed
A Nile album. Meaning that this is a very good tech death album that does what you'd expect from Nile.
Nine Inch Nails Hesitation Marks
Not as good as Nine Inch Nails' other albums. There's still some good stuff on here, but a lot of songs drag on a bit too long for my liking.
Nine Inch Nails Year Zero
Nowhere near as good as the Nine Inch Nails albums that came before it, but still has some solid material.
Nine Inch Nails The Slip
This is a solid collection of songs. None of them are that outstanding though.
Nine Inch Nails Not The Actual Events
A small taste of what Hesitation Mark's might have sounded like had it taken on a darker tone akin to NIN's classic albums. The Idea of You is absolutely amazing, I can't tell what the fuck is going on most of the time, but I fucking love it!
Noisem Blossoming Decay
This is some good solid deathgrind in the same vein as Exhumed.
Obituary Cause of Death
Cause of Death is another solid album from Obituary that yet again fails to have any standout tracks.
Omerta Hyperviolence
Opeth Pale Communion
I'm not a fan of the new sound that Opeth has been gravitating towards with their last few releases, as I've typically thought that their heaviest shit was also their best. Pale Communion is clearly a throwback to early prog rock, and is quite good for what it is, but clearly lacks originality. It just seems very odd to think that a pioneer of progressive death metal would make such a drastic shift in sound to what progressive music was like decades before any of their albums came out. With that said, Pale Communion is a pretty good album, its just not the Opeth album that I would hope for.
Opeth Deliverance
In comparison to some of the other work Opeth has put out, this is well below average. Additionally, the songs aren't exciting enough to meander on for as long as they do.
Opeth Orchid
This seems to be much more ambient than any of Opeth's later material. It is a solid album, but just isn't on the level with their future releases.
Origin Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas
An absolutely brutal pounding death metal album with a good deal of hidden technicality.
Origin Entity
Entity comes nowhere close to being as great as Antithesis, but is still a pretty enjoyable album in its own right.
Overkill White Devil Armory
Great guitar solos throughout, excellent shredders. Really fun thrash album, as is to be expected from Overkill.
Overkill The Grinding Wheel
The Grinding Wheel seems to slow it down and add more groove than typical Overkill. It still has some good riffs and hooks, so it works as far as I'm concerned. I loved Our Finest Hour.
Ozzy Osbourne Ordinary Man
This was pleasantly surprising. It exceeded my admittedly low expectations. However, I think how this album will ultimately be remembered will depend on whether or not Ozzy releases anything else afterwards. As it is, this would be an extremely poignant conclusion to a legendary career. If Ozzy goes on to record and release more new music, that would only serve to cheapen the lyrical themes found here.
Pallbearer Sorrow And Extinction
Pallbearer Forgotten Days
Pantera Far Beyond Driven
Pantera Reinventing the Steel
Periphery Juggernaut: Omega
Omega sees Periphery returning to the way they should sound as opposed to how they did on Alpha.
Periphery Periphery III: Select Difficulty
A very typical Periphery album with some songs an awesome mix of being melodic and technical, while others are formulaic.
Periphery Periphery
Pig Destroyer Book Burner
An album that isn't among Pig Destroyer's highest ranks still manages to be a pretty good listen.
Pink Floyd Animals
Post Malone Hollywood's Bleeding
Primus Tales from the Punchbowl
Weird ass album. Pretty solid, about what I've come to expect from Primus.
Primus Conspiranoid
Protest the Hero Scurrilous
Psychonaut Unfold the God Man
Psycroptic As The Kingdom Drowns
Some great riffs and not a whole lot else of note.
Psycroptic Divine Council
Public Enemy It Takes A Nation (...) To Hold Us Back
Very good rapping on here, though some of the beats seem a bit bare bones. The Slayer sample kills though.
Puig Destroyer Puig Destroyer
Pretty decent hardcore/grind album. Kind of cool that a band like this exists. I'd cream my jeans if anybody ever did this with the NBA.
Pusha T DAYTONA
Pyrrhon Abscess Time
Pretty solid album, but to me the faster songs stand head and shoulders above the slower ones.
QuietKind Shadow Play
Despite my general distaste for djent, this manages to strike a decent groove with me. With that said, my favorite parts are still when the guitar gets to shine outside of the fat djent riffs. Dude can play.
Red Fang Only Ghosts
Much more mainstream sounding than Red Fang's previous effort, Only Ghosts still has enough catchy riffs to maintain some of their appeal.
Red Hot Chili Peppers The Getaway
Overall a solid funk rock album despite some of the songs being repetitive.
Red Hot Chili Peppers Californication
Red Hot Chili Peppers Stadium Arcadium
A good album that could have gone for some editing. I guess a band this big can do something this excessive.
Revocation Existence Is Futile
Rivers of Nihil Rivers of Nihil
Run the Jewels Run the Jewels 3
Overall a solid album, though I definitely like it best when it is at its fastest, especially during Killer Mike's verses. Talk to Me and Panther Like a Panther are the standouts for me.
Rush Fly By Night
Russian Circles Gnosis
Scorpions In Trance
In Trance is a very good album that shows the type of band the Scorpions were before transforming to the band that released the classics Love At First Sting and Blackout.
Scorpions Lovedrive
Scorpions Taken By Force
Secrets of the Sky Pathway
After a pretty cool ambient opening, Three Swords kicks of the album terrifically, building up to its breaking point. The roman numeraled tracks are strictly ambient and seem to see the band crafting the Pathway the album is leading you down.
Septicflesh Modern Primitive
Sepultura Chaos A.D.
Sepultura Morbid Visions
Shrapnel (UK) The Virus Conspires
Skeletonwitch Serpents Unleashed
Skeletonwitch The Apothic Gloom
Another solid thrashy effort from Skeletonwitch with a bit more of a blackened feel this time around.
Skull Fist Chasing the Dream
Slayer Divine Intervention
This is by no means a bad album, its just difficult to justify rating it any higher than a 3.5 since it is of lesser quality than all of the other releases that Slayer put out before it. The fact that they never play any songs off of it live also makes it a pretty irrelevant album.
Slayer World Painted Blood
Slayer Undisputed Attitude
Sleep Sleep's Holy Mountain
Sleep The Sciences
Slipknot All Hope Is Gone
Slough Feg Digital Resistance
Weird 70's hard rock sound with a bit more of a metal influence. Some of it also sounds kind of like Celtic music.
Son of Aurelius The Farthest Reaches
Soundgarden Ultramega OK
There are definitely some really entertaining songs on this album, but almost half of the tracks seem unnecessary. Three of the tracks can't really even be considered songs. One such track would have been fine, but three is excessive. A few of the songs weren't the greatest either. I feel like this would be a better overall album if some of the lesser tracks were thrown out, leading to a shorter, 8 or 9 song, album.
Soundgarden Louder Than Love
This sounds a lot different than Soundgarden's later albums. Its a pretty cool sound.
Soundgarden King Animal
Soundgarden Down on the Upside
I really like some of the songs on here, but a lot of it sounds like filler to me, making the album just kind of drag on.
Steel Panther All You Can Eat
Another funny, catchy, and all around fun album from Steel Panther.
Steel Panther Heavy Metal Rules
Stick to Your Guns Better Ash Than Dust
Pretty solid hardcore with some well sung melodic bits.
Stone Sour Audio Secrecy
Stone Sour House of Gold and Bones - Part 1
Stone Sour Hydrograd
Stone Sour songs fall into one of two categories: they either have a good enough chorus to be enjoyable songs or they don't. Fortunately, for the most part, Hydrograd's choruses are pretty good. However, a shitty version of the Jump in the Fire riff does not make for a good title track, in case some body was wondering that for some reason.
Strapping Young Lad Heavy as a Really Heavy Thing
While this isn't as good as Strapping Young Lad's later records, it is still fairly entertaining to see where their later sound originated from.
SubRosa (US) For This We Fought the Battle of Ages
An entertaining atmospheric doom album, though nothing makes it truly stand out.
Suffocation …Of the Dark Light
While this isn't on par with peak Suffocation, it is still one of the better examples of OSDM you'll hear this year.
Suicidal Tendencies How Will I Laugh Tomorrow If I Can't Even Smile Today?
Pretty solid album, nothing special though. Trip at the Brain is really the only track that sticks out.
Sylosis Dormant Heart
Sylosis is one of those bands that I enjoy listening to, but not enough to actually choose to do so very often. I like the style of music that they play, but there are simply other bands that do it better (see Revocation). With that in mind, I personally feel that in order for Sylosis to step up to the next tier of bands, they need to add some variation to their future albums.
Symphony X Underworld
The band let's us know right off the bat that there's some Nevermore sound on here. Other than that this is a pretty decent album that has some good melody which could lead to the album growing on me upon more listens.
System of a Down System of a Down
System of a Down Steal This Album!
Terror Total Retaliation
Testament Titans of Creation
Testament Brotherhood of the Snake
Testament's least inspired album in their last few releases still manages to be very enjoyable and undeniably them.
Testament Demonic
The Atlas Moth The Old Believer
Pretty cool emotional sounding post metal. This is typically a genre that I have trouble getting into at all, but this album seemed pretty accessible.
The Black Dahlia Murder Everblack
The Black Dahlia Murder Miasma
The Body The Body
The shorter songs are all bomb. The longer ones are alright too, they just drag on way too long.
The Crown Cobra Speed Venom
An enjoyable albeit unremarkable thrash album. Great name though.
The Cutthroats 9 Dissent
This is an interesting sludge album that took a few songs to get into, but once it hit its stride was pretty entertaining. The eerie sounding guitar is really what makes this.
The Faceless Planetary Duality
The Sword High Country
A very disappointingly average album from The Sword.
The Sword Used Future
I can't help but think that this album would be amazing if they had the old crunchy guitar sound. As it is, it's a decent jam sounding album. Even better if you go into it with the right expectations.
Tombs Monarchy of Shadows
Tombs Savage Gold
Savage Gold is a strange fusion of sludge and black metal. Its solid, but definitely nothing spectacular. Wouldn't be surprised if my outlook towards this album improved after seeing Tombs open for Pallbearer this fall.
Tombs Under Sullen Skies
Tool 10,000 Days
10,000 Days is undeniably a Tool album even though it isn't as good as some of their classics. Additionally, the record sees a significant dip in quality for the second half.
Tool Fear Inoculum
Toothgrinder Nocturnal Masquerade
This should have been cut down to a shorter EP. Some of the songs are awesome djenty wankcore like TDEP meets Periphery. Others sound like they could be by one of the countless shitty death core clones though.
Torche Admission
Toxic Holocaust Primal Future: 2019
Trauma Ray Chameleon
Solid album. Deafheaven lite is the best way I can think to describe it.
Tribulation Down Below
Some good hooky black n role. It can be too subdued for its own good at times though.
Trivium In the Court of the Dragon
Twenty One Pilots Blurryface
An album that defies one specific genre classification with a good number of verses rapped and poppy choruses .Lyrically it is quite interesting too because it seems that somebody poured their soul into it and also made it very self aware, which is somewhat entertaining.
Tyler, the Creator Flower Boy
His more aggressive songs are the better ones on here, but the jazzy shit he has in some of the tamer beats is admittedly cool as fuck.
Upon a Burning Body Southern Hostility
Vader Tibi et Igni
This is just some straight forward death metal, chalked full of some pretty good riffs.
Vallenfyre Splinters
A mashup of a few different subgenres of metal that winds up being fairly entertaining.
Van Halen II
There are some great songs on here like Light Up the Sky and D.O.A. Unfortunately, there are a few other songs that sound like they could have been rejects from the original album.
Venom Black Metal
Venom Welcome to Hell
Venom Prison Erebos
This is some kind of technical metalcore/deathcore type of deal that goes into an almost ethereal sound at times. It seems pretty damn good for what it is, I just don't personally love what it is.
Voivod Post Society
The first two songs are pretty cool, especially the second. After that there is a dip in quality but they're still alright.
Voyager V
Pretty cool spacy, atmospheric, progressive album. Has the almost the same progressive djent sound as a band like Periphery, but doesn't overdo the djent as much as Periphery might.
Warbringer IV: Empires Collapse
Whitechapel Kin
Whitechapel Mark of the Blade
Wo Fat The Conjuring
Pretty cool doomy stoner album. The slightly psychedelic sound does enough to make it stand out above just any other average stoner album.
Wolf King Loyal to the Soil
Sludgy metalcore. Calls Converge to mind, without the technicality though.
Wolves in the Throne Room Primordial Arcana
Wormwitch Strike Mortal Soil
Quality black n roll type of album. Nothing earth shattering, but it is an entertaining listen.
Wreck and Reference Indifferent Rivers Romance End
Far from what you'd think of as music in a traditional sense, Indifferent Rivers Romance End uses a variety of sounds along with vocals to make a cool misanthropic sounding album.
XXXTENTACION ?
YOB Our Raw Heart
While there is certainly some fat that YOB would have done well to cut, their sludgy psychedelic take on doom still makes for an enjoyable listen.
Zeal and Ardor Zeal and Ardor

3.0 good
$uicideboy$ Sing Me A Lullaby, My Sweet Temptation
1349 Massive Cauldron of Chaos
Thrashy black metal that's similar to Goatwhore manages to be passably entertaining.
Aborted The Necrotic Manifesto
AC/DC Powerage
Accept Blind Rage
A decent album that is too long given that none of the songs are really that outstanding.
Aeon God Ends Here
Agalloch Pale Folklore
I'm not a big fan of two of the three songs in the opening trilogy, but the third part is pretty cool. The first half of the album sounds like it would be a good movie soundtrack, but, for the most part, isn't all that exciting to listen to alone. The second half of the album is clearly better than the first, with some pretty decent songs on it.
Alestorm Sunset on the Golden Age
Sunset on the Golden Age is decent for the first Alestorm album I've listened to. From what I've gathered it is very similar to previous releases. While this album alone is relatively fun to listen to, I can't imagine that this would be a very fun to listen to in abundance.
Alice in Chains Rainier Fog
First song is a total banger, the rest is kind of AiC by the books.
Alien Weaponry
Allegaeon Elements of the Infinite
The only real redeeming quality of this album is its great technical solos. Other than that, it sounds like any other generic deathcore band.
Alter Bridge Fortress
Amon Amarth Berserker
Amon Amarth The Great Heathen Army
Anaal Nathrakh Desideratum
Anaal Nathrakh have a very unique sound. It's a decent sound, but is somewhat difficult to get fully into.
Ancient Ascendant Echoes and Cinder
Animals As Leaders The Joy of Motion
As I Lay Dying Awakened
Asking Alexandria The Black
Surprisingly solid metalcore without too many of their god awful breakdowns.
At the Gates To Drink from the Night Itself
Austrian Death Machine Triple Brutal
Baptists Bloodmines
Pretty decent album. Sounds kind of like Enabler, meaning bad production as well.
Behemoth I Loved You at Your Darkest
Belphegor Conjuring The Dead
A decent but unremarkable blackened death metal album.
Between the Buried and Me The Silent Circus
A pretty good album, but not one of Between the Buried and Me's best ones. Mordecai is awesome, but tracks 5 and 6 are throwaways to me.
Between the Buried and Me The Great Misdirect
There are some pretty alright songs on here, but I'd say that its a disappointment overall.
Between the Buried and Me Automata I
Black Flag My War
My War starts off quite well, seeing Black Flag slow
down considerably from what they have done before.
There are some entertaining riffs, with the album
being highlighted by Forever Time and The Swinging
Man. Unfortunately, from there the final three songs
slow down Even more, essentially to a doom pace.
This is not a good sound for Black Flag, as their
guitar is far too thin sounding, lacking the crunch
required for good doom. These three songs should
have absolutely been kept off the record.
Black Label Society Catacombs Of The Black Vatican
Just another Black Label Society album. Solid stuff, nothing really memorable though.
Body Count Manslaughter
This is actually more enjoyable than I thought it would be. I think its important to not take it seriously. It does seem like they are serious about the things on here, but I think its better to think about it as being an almost humorous type of thing.
Body Count Carnivore
Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth Brothers Of The Sonic Cloth
A relatively middle of the road doom metal effort.
Bullet For My Valentine Venom
Not as bad as the dogshit Temper Temper, not as good as their first three .However, the latter may simply because I'm not the angsty teen I was when listening to the older albums. Still some decent melodies and solos found here, though again, not as many as on their earlier records.
Caliban Ghost Empire
Candlemass House of Doom
Not nearly as doomy as you might expect. A fine but unremarkable release.
Cannabis Corpse From Wisdom to Baked
Pretty run of the mill death metal album, though there are some pretty good songs. The song titles are good for a chuckle too.
Cannibal Corpse Red Before Black
CC are the Motorhead/Slayer of death metal. They release very similar albums each time and while that's fine to an extent some (like this one) still just feel somewhat uninspired.
Car Bomb Mordial
Carcass Despicable
Carcass Reek of Putrefaction
The absolutely horrible production on here knocks it down a full point, if not more.
Carnifex World War X
Charli XCX Crash
Chevelle La Gárgola
Childish Gambino Camp
CHON CHON
Clutch Sunrise On Slaughter Beach
Conan Blood Eagle
Conan Revengeance
Quite frankly this is some ordinary ass stoner doom shit.
Corrosion of Conformity IX
IX is an alright album consisting of sludgy sounding southern rock, but is nothing too exciting.
Corrosion of Conformity Deliverance
Cro-Mags From the Grave
Cynic Ascension Codes
Dark Sermon The Oracle
The Oracle is a strange blackened death core album which is decently enjoyable.
Deafheaven Demo
Decapitated Cancer Culture
A fine but unremarkable groovy death metal album.........
Decrepit Birth ...And Time Begins
Relatively run of the mill straightforward death metal album that lacks the excitement brought forth by an abundance of technicality in Decrepit Birth's following albums.
Deftones Saturday Night Wrist
Deicide In the Minds of Evil
Destroyer of Light Chamber of Horrors
Not an exceptionally heavy or catchy album, Chamber of Horrors is still a decent listen.
DevilDriver Winter Kills
Down Down II: A Bustle in Your Hedgerow
DragonForce Maximum Overload
Maximum Overload houses both some very fast and technical playing, along with a few great catchy hooks. However, DragonForce goes all in on the catchy hooks, seeing many of them miss their intended mark, creating an overall cheesy album with a couple of highlights.
Drawers Drawers
Earth Primitive and Deadly
Droney ambient doom isn't really a genre that I'm that interested in, but I did find Primitive and Deadly to be pretty decent.
Earth The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull
A well made ambient soundscape. With that said, its too slow moving to really be an entertaining listen. May be good in a live setting however.
Earth Full Upon Her Burning Lips
East of the Wall Redaction Artifacts
Enslaved Isa
This album is neither anything special, nor anything terrible. Instead, this is overall a pretty middle of the road album. However, there are a couple of better songs, like Violet Drawing, that bring the album above mediocrity.
Enslaved Caravans to the Outer Worlds
Esoctrilihum Eternity Of Shaog
While there are interesting ideas and sounds in this progressive black metal album, none of them grabbed me as much as necessary to justify the length.
Exodus Blood In, Blood Out
Blood In, Blood Out is a good album. About what you'd expect from modern day Exodus. However, I think this album would have benefited from being shorter, either by cutting out weaker songs or shortening some of the longer ones.
Eyehategod Eyehategod
It begins with a pretty cool song that sounds like a hardcore/sludge fusion. This is just for one track, however, as the sound quickly shifts back to what is expected from Eyehategod. Pretty solid stuff, but honestly I would have liked it to stay as fast paced as the opening track throughout.
Eyehategod Confederacy of Ruined Lives
Not quite as good as Eyehategod's other albums, but still not a bad record. .001% is absolutely pointless though.
Fallujah Undying Light
Fallujah The Harvest Wombs
This album is obviously quite technical, in this case, however, I don't feel like that leads to it being entertaining. To me this band just kind of sounds like a worse version of The Faceless, and are unable to be nearly as enjoyable to listen to.
Five Finger Death Punch The Way Of The Fist
Fuck the Facts Pleine Noirceur
Ghost (SWE) Infestissumam
Ghost (SWE) Popestar
Square Hammer is fire, but the covers are nothing special. Missionary Man is good, but just doesn't seem like Ghost.
Grand Magus Triumph And Power
Greta Van Fleet The Battle at Garden's Gate
Harm's Way (USA-IL) Reality Approaches
Hatebreed The Concrete Confessional
More or less what you'd expect from Hatebreed with a bit more of a thrash sound than usual.
Helms Alee Stillicide
Some headbangable riffs on a decent album. Some of the songs are really good while others are not.
High on Fire Death Is This Communion
High on Fire Surrounded By Thieves
Ice Nine Kills Every Trick in the Book
Immortal Northern Chaos Gods
In Flames Battles
While Battles is certainly the most generic of In Flames' more pop sound, it still has some of the same great hooks. These great hooks are fewer, but still present in songs like In My Room and Underneath My Skin especially.
In Flames I, the Mask
This is a really hit and miss record for me. The songs that hit had really catchy hooks that were easy to get into. On the other hand, the ones that didn't get their hooks in were just awful.
Intronaut Void
Less refined than later Intronaut records, void sounds very similar to the more core sections of Between the Buried and Me.
Iron Maiden Dance Of Death
Iron Maiden The Final Frontier
Iron Maiden Fear Of The Dark
Iron Maiden The Book Of Souls
A decent album in the same vein as The Final Frontier. There are some catchy parts so I'm sure it'll grow on me with more listens.
Judas Priest Redeemer Of Souls
It is unreasonable to think that this would live up to classics like Screaming For Vengeance and Painkiller. However, it is perfectly reasonable to think that Priest can still put out a decently entertaining album, which is exactly what they've done with Redeemer of Souls.
Kanye West ye
Kanye West Donda
Kataklysm Unconquered
Kataklysm Waiting for the End to Come
KEN mode Success
Success is post punk with a bit of technicality here and there. There are a few good songs, but as a whole the album is absolutely nothing special.
Kendrick Lamar untitled unmastered.
Basically a glorified album of bonus tracks. With that in mind it's actually a bit better than expected.
Kendrick Lamar DAMN.
Kill Devil Hill Revolution Rise
Killswitch Engage Disarm the Descent
Knocked Loose Pop Culture
Korn Requiem
Korn Untitled
kyng Burn The Serum
Mix between radio rock and stoner which seems to lean more towards radio rock. Decently entertaining album.
Lacuna Coil Broken Crown Halo
Exactly what you'd expect from Lacuna Coil. Its not terrible, but nothing special either.
Lamb of God Lamb of God
It's a Lamb of God album to be sure. None of the riffs or hooks caught me quite like most of their other releases, but I could definitely see this growing with multiple listens.
Leprous Aphelion
Lil Lotus Error Boy
Lil Peep Come Over When You're Sober, Pt. 2
Low Roar Inure
Low Roar Maybe Tomorrow...
Mac Miller Circles
Machine Head Through The Ashes Of Empires
Imperium gets this album off to a terrific start, but unfortunately its just downhill from there, with the majority of the songs seeming like generic Machine Head tracks.
Marijannah Istanah
Marty Friedman Inferno
The playing on here is excellent, but it just gets a little bit boring to me since the majority of the tracks are purely instrumental.
Mastodon Call of the Mastodon
Mayhem Esoteric Warfare
This would be a lot easier to enjoy if the production was better. As it is, it is somewhat difficult to hear all of the intricacies happening in the music, which simply makes it more difficult to appreciate.
Megadeth The System Has Failed
Megadeth United Abominations
Megadeth The Sick, The Dying... And The Dead!
Melvins Stoner Witch
Stoner Witch certainly has some good songs on it. However, the majority of the record is quite boring.
Melvins A Walk With Love And Death
This is very much a tale of two sides. Death is great sludgy doom and is quite possibly the best material I've ever heard from Melvins. Unfortunately, the album takes a complete turn for the worst with love, turning into noise and it as absolute garbage. The only redeeming factor of Love is Give it to Me.
Mono/The Ocean Transcendental
Transcendental tries to sound expansive but overall isn't that exciting.
Mortals Cursed to See the Future
Cursed to See the Future is a blackened sludge album from female power trio Mortals. It is a decent sounding album, but most of the songs go on for too long and in turn are unable to remain interesting.
Motorhead Orgasmatron
Motorhead Aftershock
Motorhead Bad Magic
This is a Motorhead album. It isn't good or bad, just Motorhead.
Motorhead Bomber
Motorhead Rock 'N' Roll
Municipal Waste The Art Of Partying
Municipal Waste The Last Rager
Municipal Waste Electrified Brain
My Dying Bride Feel the Misery
Overall kind of cool doom metal, but in the end it doesn't do too much to differentiate itself.
Nashville Pussy Up the Dosage
New Medicine Breaking The Model
I absolutely loved New Medicine's debut album Race You to the Bottom when it came out in 2010 it had some cool riffs, was catchy as all hell and was just an all around enjoyable listen. With this in mind, Breaking the Model is tremendously disappointing, it was able to retain none of the previously mentioned good qualities, except for very small amounts of catchiness. Damn shame that a band with such potential isn't able to realize it again.
Night Demon Darkness Remains
An 80's throwback that comes off sounding rather generic.
Nine Inch Nails Add Violence
Less Than is the standout here. The others aren't bad, but to me great Nine Inch Nails is catchy as fuck and the final 4 songs just aren't.
Nocturnus Ethereal Tomb
A relatively run of the mill death metal album. There is nothing wrong with it, but it just isn't particularly great either. The solos are probably the best part.
Obituary The End Complete
Slow plodding death metal that never manages to get too far off the ground.
Opeth Heritage
A slower, softer, sounding album that has kind of an old school feel to it. Its decent, not the worst thing you could listen to, but is still easily Opeth's worst release to date.
Opeth In Cauda Venenum
Ozzy Osbourne The Ultimate Sin
Paradise Lost Medusa
Without a doubt, Medusa is at its best when it is carrying a hooky melody. Unfortunately, more often than not, it doesn't have one.
Pelican Nighttime Stories
Periphery Clear
Periphery Juggernaut: Alpha
Just as with Periphery's previous albums, Alpha sees some of the songs being very cool and technical while others are boring djenty shit.
Periphery Periphery IV: Hail Stan
Pink Siifu NEGRO
Poison the Well The Opposite of December
An interesting, sometimes mathcore, metalcore album. Overall though, its pretty unspectacular.
Portal ION
Too discordant for its own good. Some good instrumentation hidden behind needlessly muddy production.
Primal Fear Delivering The Black
Primus Primus and The Chocolate Factory With The Fungi Ensemble
There's no question that this is a really weird album by Primus, but would you really expect anything different from them? Decently entertaining, although not as good as some of their older material.
Primus Pork Soda
This is nowhere even close to as good as the first two albums from Primus. I think the issue that makes it this way is that it is now entirely focused on the bass, meaning the guitar is no longer able to shine and drive the tracks. With that said, there are some good songs on here. However, there are also a lot of songs that are just kind of slow and that lack excitement.
Rammstein Untitled
Rammstein Zeit
Red Dragon Cartel Red Dragon Cartel
Revocation Chaos of Forms
Revocation Empire of the Obscene
Rivers of Nihil The Work
Russian Circles Guidance
Solid post metal, but it was much more mellow than I would've liked. I'm not saying it necessarily should have been heavier, just that some more uptempo songs would have helped the flow.
Russian Circles Blood Year
Sabaton Heroes
Pretty decent album, but there's not a whole lot of variety to keep it exciting. The first song starts it off perfectly and is is really catchy. Unfortunately, that ends up being the best song on here, as the album just goes downhill from there.
Scorpions Return To Forever
Scorpions deliver pretty much exactly what you'd expect from them in their 50th year.
Scorpions Rock Believer
Certainly not among their best releases, but much better than I expected in 2022.
Septicflesh Titan
This album clearly tries to do something different than what you'll normally hear out of metal. Unfortunately for Septicflesh, however, different doesn't really translate to it being anything special or memorable.
Sepultura Roots
Seremonia Ihminen
Slayer God Hates Us All
Slipknot Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses
Slipknot .5: The Gray Chapter
This is most definitely a Slipknot album, for better or worse. Honestly, I probably would have been really into this if it came out when I was in high school. As it is now, however, this is no more than a slightly above average radio metal album.
Slipknot We Are Not Your Kind
Slipknot The End, So Far
The best part of about this album is that it gives Slipknot an excuse to hit the road for some major touring. Honestly, that?s all I personally really need from new Slipknot releases.
Smrtdeath Somethjngs Wrong
Soulfly Savages
Steak Slab City
Slab City is overall a pretty good album. However, it doesn't really take any chances, leaving some of the songs a bit bland.
Stick to Your Guns Spectre
Suffocation Effigy of the Forgotten
I really don't like the vocals on here; to me, the growling doesn't even sound like words. It is pretty solid instrumentally, but for some reason its to difficult to listen past the vocals during parts. This album is actually quite incredible aside from the vocals, I will probably view this album more favorably if I ever get used to the vocals though.
System of a Down Hypnotize
Telekinetic Yeti Primordial
Testament Souls of Black
Testament Low
The Black Dahlia Murder Deflorate
The worst Black Dahlia Murder album so far. Still not bad though. I Will Return is a clear standout.
The Ocean Pelagial
Thou Inconsolable
Tombs The Grand Annihilation
The Grand Annihilation is not nearly black enough to stand toe to toe with Tombs' better material.
Torche Restarter
Restarter is a slightly above average album consisting primarily of fuzzy sounding stoner riffs.
Touche Amore Stage Four
This is clearly a very emotional album, though it seems strange to have these type of lyrics on a post-punk album that almost borders on being punk-pop.
Toxic Holocaust Chemistry of Consciousness
Trap Them Blissfucker
At first this sounded like a poor man's Eyehategod, but after a bit it became evident that this was generally faster and more pounding. All the same, nothing too special here.
Triptykon Melana Chasmata
Trivium Vengeance Falls
Truckfighters Universe
Tyler, the Creator Igor
Ulver Flowers of Evil
Outside of a couple of standouts, this is a listenable yet forgettable release.
Vader Solitude in Madness
Van Halen Fair Warning
Van Halen are at their best when Eddie is able to show his flare in fast paced songs. Unfortunately, this album has a lot of slower ones and even one where the bass is the focal point over guitars. There are some decent songs on here, but Unchained is really the only one to leave a lasting impression.
Vastum Hole Below
Solid old school sounding death metal with a dark ambient feel.
Veil of Maya Matriarch
Matriarch is a decent deathcore record that sees the slight progressiveness and technicality uplift it a bit, but not quite out of mediocrity. The vocals on here are very hit and miss, much like with Periphery.
Volbeat Rewind, Replay, Rebound
Watain The Wild Hunt
Watain Trident Wolf Eclipse
Not a fan of the production on here. Other than that, this is some black metal ass black metal.
Weedeater Goliathan
Goliathan features exactly the thick, plodding, doomy grooves you'd expect from a band called Weedeater.
Whitechapel Our Endless War
Within Temptation Hydra
Within the Ruins Phenomena
This band sounds like they could be good if they wanted to if they cut down on the breakdowns and used more normal tuning instead of trying and failing to sound exceedingly heavy. With that said, this album is actually better than I expected it to be as I was expecting pure dogshit like Emmure.
Wretched (USA-NC) Cannibal
The best songs on here sound ripped off of old Black Dahlia Murder. The other ones are just relatively boring.
Xerxes Collision Blonde
Collision Blonde is a pretty cool mixture of ambient and hardcore music. Not all of the songs hit the mark, but at such a short run time, the album is still a worthwhile listen.

2.5 average
Anvil Impact Is Imminent
Author and Punisher Kruller
Boris Love and Evol
I guess this is fine for what it is (ambient noise metal?) But I just don't like what it is. Last song is the best.
Bring Me The Horizon That's the Spirit
Relatively run of the mill radio rock with a handful of decently catchy songs.
Chance the Rapper Coloring Book
A few good songs, but overall just a lot of gospel sounding music with pedestrian rapping over the top.
Chief Keef GloToven
Childish Gambino Because the Internet
Children of Bodom Halo of Blood
Cloudkicker Unending
Corrections House Know How To Carry A Whip
Mash up of a bunch of noise and drone type shit. Not really my cup of tea.
D.R.I. But Wait...There's More!
Some decent crossover. Mad Man is actually pretty cool. This EP is just so short that it barely seems worth it though.
Death Angel The Dream Calls for Blood
Devin Townsend Project Z2
This is the first time I've listened to Devin Townsend in anything other than SYL and, while not a bad album, Z2 doesn't do much to convince me to listen to more in the future. There are certainly some good songs on here, but they are greatly outnumbered by the average ones.
Disturbed Asylum
Disturbed Immortalized
In the same vein as Asylum, Immortalized is a has a few standout tracks (Open Your Eyes) but is primarily cookie cutter Disturbed.
Eyehategod A History Of Nomadic Behavior
Fall Out Boy American Beauty/American Psycho
American Beauty/American Psycho sees Fall Out Boy continuing away from the pop-punk genre into more straight up pop. There are some good, catchy songs, as is to be expected from a pop album. However, this record is largely composed of mediocre sounding filler.
G-Eazy The Beautiful & Damned
To me, G-Eazy's music has always been more about the beats and hooks (typically not sung by him) than his rapping. That is still the case with The Beautiful & Damned, just look at the title track, Him & I and Eazy. However, his past songs still had some entertaining lyrics, ranging from obscure references to humorous sexual comments ("I bust in your face just to let you know I'm cumming"). This release, however, sees G change to making stacks and fucking bitches (without any wit). This, to me, is not a good fit, but it doesn't do enough to keep me from enjoying some of these songs, even if some songs may have in fact been better if G-Eazy wasn't even on them...
Ghoul Dungeon Bastards
The riffs and instrumentals are all solid, but this album gets shaky in the vocals department. In general, the vocals are fine, but when they try to give variety it blows up in their face.
Goatwhore Vengeful Ascension
Forget all the subgenre nonsense, this is basically a thrash album. Unfortunately, thrash only goes as far as its riffs take it, which, in this case, isn't far at all.
Godflesh Decline and Fall
A slow and heavy industrial EP that isn't necessarily bad, but rather does absolutely nothing to stand out.
Godsmack 1000hp
1000hp was not even able to reach the lowered expectations I had for Godsmack's new album. Although it is partially that I no longer enjoy music this simple so much, this album has also lost much of the melody and catchyness that made Godsmack decent in the first place.
Godsmack When Legends Rise
I definitely don't like Godsmack as much as I used to. Generic radio rock. At Least the second to last song was good.
Hatebreed The Divinity of Purpose
Helms Alee Keep This Be the Way
Hollywood Undead Day of the Dead
Not as good as Hollywood Undead's first two albums, but it is at least better than that piece of shit third.
Ice Nine Kills Safe Is Just a Shadow
Iron Maiden No Prayer For The Dying
Iron Maiden The X Factor
Iron Maiden Virtual XI
Kanye West Yeezus
Kanye West 808s and Heartbreak
Korn The Paradigm Shift
Lil Peep Vertigo
Lil Wayne Tha Carter V
Mac Miller The Divine Feminine
Less hip hop and more piano ballad. Not bad, but also not why I listen to Mac Miller.
Machine Gun Kelly Tickets to My Downfall
Marilyn Manson The Pale Emperor
Marilyn Manson has never really been my thing. In general the only songs of his are the really catchy ones. There aren't many catchy songs on here.
Mayhem Atavistic Black Disorder / Kommando
Wish they had done the covers in a black metal style. At least the original song Black Glass Communion is pretty solid.
Mayhem De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas
Megadeth Super Collider
Megadeth The World Needs A Hero
Metallica Reload
Metallica Load
Motley Crue Theatre Of Pain
Easily the worst album Crue released in the 80's. There are a couple of good songs, but none are as great as on the other ones from that era. Even the more mundane tracks seem more mundane.
Opeth Sorceress
Opeth's worst album to date. While the previous albums were still undoubtedly rock albums, this one leaves that up for debate. With that said, they are still terrific musicians that I will jump at the opportunity to see live.
Panic! at the Disco Death of a Bachelor
Some hit and miss pop punk, just as is to be expected from Panic!
Pearl Jam Lightning Bolt
Pig Destroyer The Octagonal Stairway
Like everyone said, first 3 are solid Pig Destroyer last 3 are noise. Don't mind the first noise song, could've been a decent album interlude to break up the grind, but yeah I don't wanna listen to consecutive songs of it that keep getting longer.
Primus The Desaturating Seven
Weird shit just like you'd expect from Primus. For my money though, it's too subdued for it's own good. Too much discordant noise over bass lines.
Queensryche Queensryche
Rob Zombie Venomous Rat Regeneration Vendor
Rob Zombie The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy...
Really simplistic songs with a few catchy choruses.
Scale the Summit In a World of Fear
Scale the Summit are still technical, but there is a certain something missing from their sound this time around, it just seems unfocused. Not an outright bad album, but certainly a disappointment after V.
Sepultura The Mediator Between Head and Hands Must Be the Heart
Sepultura Machine Messiah
Sepultura is one of those bands that I follow because of who they were. Sometimes I'm not sure why I even bother.
Terror The Walls Will Fall
Relatively generic sounding hardcore. Not good, not bad.
Testament The Ritual
The Kindred Life in Lucidity
Tombs All Empires Fall
A relatively underwhelming release from Tombs that focuses too much on ambiance and can't even consistently deliver on the blacker parts.
Unearth Watchers of Rule
This album actually has some decently technical playing and has a couple of good hooks. However, I feel that it spends too much time trying to be heavy just for the sake of being heavy. Honestly, chill the fuck out with the breakdowns going on throughout the entire song.
Venom From the Very Depths
This album is produced like shit, doesn't sound much better than Black Metal or Welcome to Hell. As for the music itself, I was pleasantly surprised at the beginning. Unfortunately, around the halfway mark this album takes a significant hit in quality, turning to pure shit. The opening half of this album, however, is worth a listen just to see what Venom are up to nowadays.
Wo Fat Midnight Cometh
A pedestrian stoner metal effort. Not terrible, but not special either.
Wovenwar Wovenwar
Just about what you'd expect from the new incarnation of As I Lay Dying. The only difference is that it isn't as catchy, taking away the only real redeeming quality.

2.0 poor
$uicideboy$ Stop Staring at the Shadows
AC/DC Black Ice
AC/DC Power Up
I can't imagine many outside of the bands biggest fanatics getting much out of this.
After the Burial Wolves Within
Avenged Sevenfold Hail To The King
Blackbear misery lake
Born of Osiris Tomorrow We Die Alive
Boston Life, Love & Hope
Bullet For My Valentine Temper Temper
Children of Bodom Relentless Reckless Forever
Device Device
Disturbed Believe
Disturbed Divisive
Five Finger Death Punch The Wrong Side of Heaven and The Righteous Side of Hell, Volume 1
Five Finger Death Punch F8
Woof these lyrics are terrible. Pretty solid instrumentally though, especially that technical riff in This Is War.
Five Finger Death Punch AfterLife
Hellyeah Welcome Home
Ihsahn Das Seelenbrechen
KMFDM Our Time Will Come
Our Time Will Come has a couple of good songs, but is largely just boring electronic shit.
Leprous Pitfalls
Lil Tecca Virgo World
Machine Head Catharsis
An album of unneeded stylistic shifts and cringeworthy lyrics.
Megadeth Risk
Motorhead The Wörld Is Yours
Napalm Death Resentment is Always Seismic...
I don't think these B-Sides needed to be released.
Nine Inch Nails Bad Witch
God Break Down the Door is the only song on here that even comes close to giving me what I want from NIN. Beyond that, this is pretty much just a noise album. Very diasappointing for me personally.
Post Malone Twelve Carat Toothache
Prophets of Rage The Party's Over
Two new songs and three live ones. Only the first new song was good.
Rob Zombie Hellbilly Deluxe 2
Rob Zombie The Lunar Injection Kool Aid Eclipse Conspiracy
Slayer Repentless
So fucking generic. At least WPB had some goddamn character.
Slayer Diabolus In Musica
Steel Panther Lower the Bar
While Poontang Boomerang is up there with Steel Panthers best songs, the rest of the album is quite generic sounding and doesn't even have enough shock factor to make it entertaining.
Stone Sour House of Gold and Bones - Part 2
Sunn O))) and Ulver Terrestrials
TesseracT Polaris
Meh. Periphery without whatever it is that makes Periphery somewhat cool.
The Devil Wears Prada 8:18
Trippie Redd Neon Shark vs. Pegasus (Deluxe)
Twenty One Pilots Trench
Wreck and Reference Want
This album did absolutely nothing for me. I guess I just don't understand it.
XXXTENTACION Skins
YUNGBLUD Idols

1.5 very poor
AC/DC Rock Or Bust
Fairly cookie cutter bluesy rock. About what you'd expect from them this late in their career.
Alcest Shelter
Alice Cooper Paranormal
Don't get me wrong, I'm very impressed that Alice Cooper can still make music at his age, but Paranormal sounds like some of Motley Crue's throwaway albums like New Tattoo and Theater of Pain.
Ariana Grande Positions
Boris Dear
I found this to be quite a boring album. Sure it has its moments, the climax of Dystopia comes to mind, but these moments are buried under so much tedium that getting to them doesn't really seem worth it. Obviously, I'm not a Boris fan and this album has done nothing to sell me on them.
Chance the Rapper The Big Day
Decapitated Blood Mantra
Not earth-shakingly bad, just not particularly interesting to listen to. This album is a mixture of average tracks and really bad ones, making it very inconsistent as well.
Earth Earth 2: Special Low Frequency Version
Really slow droning music that really doesn't have anything going on.
Eminem Music To Be Murdered By
Fall Out Boy M A N I A
I listen to new Fall Out Boy albums to find out the song or two that I actually like. Unfortunately, this one couldn't even deliver on that.
Five Finger Death Punch War Is The Answer
Halsey Manic
At least there's a couple bangers amongst the trash.
Hollywood Undead New Empire Vol. 1
Outside of a couple decent hooks this is a pretty standard radio rock album.
Hollywood Undead Hotel Kalifornia
Megadeth Th1rt3en
Melvins Hold It In
The vast majority of this album did nothing at all for me. This was my first time listening to the Melvins and while I understand that this probably isn't their best album to start with, it spurred absolutely no interest in going back to listen to their other albums.
Metallica St. Anger
Not all of the songs seem like they'd be terrible if the instruments didn't just sound like shit. Gotta admit, the first couple songs are pretty catchy.
Obituary Inked in Blood
A completely unremarkable album by a band that I feel has always been highly overrated.
Pig Destroyer Mass & Volume
The second song is slightly better than the first, but overall this album is not that good at all, especially not since we've come to expect nothing but greatness from Pig Destroyer.
Rhapsody of Fire Dark Wings Of Steel
Skid Row Rise of the Damnation Army: United World Rebellion
Very generic hard rock. Nobody would listen to or give two shits about this EP if the band releasing it didn't share a name with the (supposedly) same one that released two classics in the 80's. The ballad is particularly awful.
XXXTENTACION Bad Vibes Forever

1.0 awful
Black Veil Brides Wretched and Divine
Blood Incantation Timewave Zero
For all I know, this could be good for what it is; however, I don?t care as I?m not interested in sitting down and listening to sci-fi soundtracks. If this didn?t say Blood Incantation?s name on it, I would?ve turned it off during the first song, but given their great past releases I continued. I should not have.
Disturbed Evolution
An album of boring B-sides as Disturbed desperately tries for another hit single.
G-Eazy Everything's Strange Here
Only made it about half through this and it's a hard pass. I guess it's his failed attempt at mixing shitty indie rock and hip hop?
Hollywood Undead Notes From the Underground
Prophets of Rage Prophets of Rage
I thought this might be ok after the first 2 songs, but man was I wrong. I didn't make it all the way through because it was just so dull and uninspired.
