I might be incredibly biased for my love for this album. In Rainbows introduced me to everything, whether it be indie, experimental and everything in between and beyond. However, comparing to all of their previous releases, Rainbows holds up greatly. It doesn't shy away from being stunningly melodic while still being accessible. It's not their heaviest or more abstract, but it sits in its own in serene and colorful beauty. |

Craft Spells Idle Labor |
Captured Track's usual sound vary from nice background music to the equivalent of watching white paint dry.
Idle Labor, however, is much different. Sweet, sugary and catchy hooks, irresistible songwriting, sun-drenched synths and guitar leads that packs a danceable punch; Craft Spells offers a much needed change of pace from the typical jingle jangle drenched to fuck with reverb.
Heavily underrated pop album.

This is a difficult album to judge, most notably because whether you love it or hate it... you're probably right. Wareham's vocals are oddly stiff and sometimes aggravating, melodies and chord progressions are incredibly similar through most of the tracks and some questionable lyrical choices ("I stood in line and ate my Twinkies" comes to mind). However, what sets this apart is the strikingly emotional and drug-infused agony that is so melodically stressed in this record that makes it so memorable and loved. As for the lyrics, perhaps the argument for "romanticizing the mundane" rings some truth, but take it as you will. But, in the end, it's the "lonely in the summer-night" atmosphere that brings this album to truly shine. Great tracks include the jazzy "Decomposing Trees," dreamy "Another Day" and the anguishing yet beautiful cover of "What A Pity." Let it grow, it might strike a chord on you.

With sonically transcendent works before this one, Love Streams is a very tame Tim Hecker piece. The Oneohtrix Point Never "prog electronic" angle does give out some colorful textures and an ethereal sound, but its not all hyped up to be. Nothing boring, but nothing cinematic or memorable like Virgins or Harmony. It's a decently nice ambient record, but doesn't feel like a Tim Hecker record. |

Very experimental, but not much substance. Directionless, lo-fi, absurd, and often amusing, if not questionable. Synths come about at complete random, with the occasional sound pieces (Plastic Season) and noise (For You To Operate). To finish off, swirls and swirls of synthesizers appear to settle the record's climax. This is definitely not the OPN record to start with, but if you're interested in OPN at his most inaccessible, consider spinning this one. In the meantime, however, there's not much to talk about.

The only way to get the most out of this album is to watch a 9/11 documentary (102 Minutes That Changed America in my case) with the album in the background. Other than that, you got a heavily repetitive ambient record that's all implicit meaning but no substance. I hardly take the "too deep for me" cop-out when placing value to a record, but perhaps I'm too self-aware to fall for this one. It's one of those "cool concept, poor execution" types, only it seems that most people are oblivious to that matter this time.
