Hobo Johnson The Rise of Hobo Johnson
really strong start, though unfortunately it fizzles out. blatant but entertaining songwriting, the vocal delivery and what feels like genuine adlibbing helps with the sincerity of the rather simple lyrics. the first five tracks go from great to good, the rest are relatively forgettable. a lot of potential shining through here, some fulfilled though a lot not

Aesop Rock The Impossible Kid
good writing with some great beats and some really cool and pristine stuff aesop does in terms of his rhythms/flow. everything is produced/mixed fantastically, aesop blends in perfectly, every song is a good story told in a great fashion. only qualms would be what I'd consider filler in the middle of the album, but it picks up near the end. solid listen

Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
really great album in all directions, instrumentation is always fun and pleasant and the lyricism fits. the witty and dry confessional direction the writing goes in is perfect, suits the sound very well and will's sometimes monotonous, sometimes extremely abrasive vocal style. only real complaint is that sometimes the mix is so lo-fi that will's vocals get drowned out significantly, not a good thing when the lyrics are the focal point of the album. basically no filler except maybe one particular song and the album almost feels like a narrative, definitely a strong listen both up close and from a distance

La Dispute Rooms of the House
fantastic songwriting, pretty much every song here is beautiful and the dynamic contrast they flirt with in most songs here feels extremely purposeful and effective. instrumentation and song structures are unique, mixing is overall good but especially phenomenal on the opener. so much to take in here in terms of both instrumentation and lyricism, unfortunately the album doesn't feel extremely coherent and the ending track leaves a lot to be desired. a set of stories that feels less related than their previous albums, but all fantastic stories on their own regardless. great album love u jordan

The Brobecks Violent Things
a ton of potential shines through here, but isn't necessarily fulfilled due to some pretty lackluster production/mixing and the tracklist is a constant toss between good songs and filler. lyricism is pretty simple but it's apparent that it aims to be, and is relatively successful. fun album, great pop

Superorganism Superorganism
this is a super entertaining listen. though it starts off with a weak opener the payoff of the rest of the first half more than makes up for it. unfortunately it begins to fall into the gimmick trap, prides itself on a lot of really great unique qualities at the beginning but doesn't really introduce any more throughout the rest of the album - they also don't quite work as well in a particular song due to a stark contrast in delivery and lyricism that doesn't really feel purposeful. nonetheless really fun, overall a satisfying listen

Hop Along Bark Your Head Off, Dog
honestly a fantastic album, the songwriting and production here is great. it explores the sincerity that hop along that have always been good at conveying in a new, softer direction that makes up for the lack of density by way of distorted guitars and punchier mixing with a wide and well-utilized selection of instruments that successfully and complexly texture each song. packed with great lyricism and great instrumentation, easily hop along's most consistent and pleasant album yet. only criticisms would be some filler in the middle and perhaps an anti-climactic ending
