I'd say they're on the plateau they were at when they did the Black Album.. Only difference is, they were leaving thrash/prog metal back then, they might be just about to embrace it again with this one.
Similarly, with the Black Album, there are a few songs I can't bear to listen to, they're so cringeworthy, but there are some really good ones too. I think this post-Bob Rock-era might be a very fruitful one, or they could get totally lost, only time will tell.
Oh and Rick, be a dear and turn the sound down, get rid of that buzz, and make the bass more audible, cheers. | 3.5
