A little bit of everything,

Valiant Hearts Hidden Realms
It is absolutely mindboggling for me to grasp that Valiant Hearts is so under-the-radar in the post-hardcore scene whenever they flat out do it so much better than anyone else. I think this album shows them finding their strength in heavy, intensely creative melodies and hooks with the lyrical themes of escapism. It really nails what I think Yonder was lacking and that?s allowing each song to blossom and swell and grow instead of succumbing to repetition which ultimately plagued that album. The sound is very energetic and intense, but it still finds a way to be ethereal and transcendent. ?Breathless,? ?Elixir,? ?Heavensent,? and ?The Alchemis		4.5

Taylor Swift The Life of a Showgirl
I think it?s good, but I do still miss the folklore/evermore days. She needs to team up with the national again. I prefer her when she?s serious and not just being campy. At least it?s a step up from the last album. 		3.0

Big Thief Double Infinity
God what a disappointing week for music this is. I feel like it?s the most 2.5s I?ve given out at one time for a bunch of albums I kinda was looking forward to. Between this and new Fleshwater and Tame Impala and Between the Buried and Me, it?s like every new single/album any of those has put out this week has just had a 2.5 slapped right on it at the same time. Rambling aside this is about the most lifeless they?ve ever sounded. Granted, I didn?t expect much from the singles but I had hoped that either the singles would?ve grown on me or maybe the rest of the album would be better, but, alas? no. Their prior work has been good and Adrianne?s		2.5

  • DoofDoof Funny thing is I find the new Big Thief worse at doing the boring barroom ballads than Cigarettes After Sex. Seriously three of the songs off Two Hands are just so sub Cowboy Junkies bland but I quite like that brand of boring music (hence my love for CAS?). The little peculiarities of taste.
