No one can ever accuse Sigh of lacking innovation, that much is sure, but what of this album? Well, it is absolutely fucking nuts. Refusing to ever sit still, and utilizing congas, accordion, flutes, theremin, etc., Sigh create a sound unlike anything you're going to hear all year. From the tastefully bluesy number (yep, lounge-metal) "Amnesia", to the demented circus that is "Far Beneath The In-Between"(seriously, Nightwish should take notes), In Somniphobia is an incredibly challenging album, marrying all of Sigh's best traits and adding new tricks to the mix. Progressive, avant-garde, experimental, psychedelic - In Somniphobia is a metal album pushing the envelope, challenging the conventions of metal while borrowing from the past (Imaginary Sonicscape).

This is really annoying. It's a jumbled mess of different sounds and influences that don't really go together well.
It's overblown and bloated to the extreme, with few moments actually feeling "creative."
Oh and I'm totally accusing them of lacking innovation.

Sigh are definitely not for everyone. Music like this sort of takes time to sink in for a lot of people who want to like it. Personally, this is the perfect type of music for me. It's insane, it's innovative, it's dark and at moments it's even catchy.

I went into this album not really expecting to like it, but I was very, very surprised. Sigh's weird and avant-garde sound is really on point this time around and I'd say this is easily the best stuff I've heard from them.

Well, it's difficult to digest. Overall it's chaotic and feels like they took like 2000 ideas and mashed them all into one album. This works for some songs, not for others. Overall though it's trademark Sigh craziness (read: fun), and there are some truly amazing moments. Equale is probably the highlight for me. That or Amnesia.

This isn't just a black metal record with avant-garde elements thrown in for good (or bad) measure; In Somniphobia is an album that opposes logic and a casual listener's thoughts, instead rooting for craziness that could do mostly no wrong in blending in with Mirai Kawashima and Dr. Mikannibal's esoteric innovation. The ninth full-length CD encompasses a range of moods, that's for sure...

After Scenes From Hell, I thought Sigh had lost the plot, descending into a endless void of wankery and cheap gimmicks. So, listening to this with zero expectations whatsoever, I was really quite surprised. Their flaws are still here, as prominent as ever, but they're on their upward climb back to the top. 'Amnesia' is hands down, one of my top tracks for this year.

It took a few years before it dawned upon me that Sigh was never better than on In Somniphobia. It?s an earful for sure, but once it sinks in, every song is there to stay. Great album from start to end!

In Somniphobia is musical excellence. It is
impressive how Sigh manages to create a
balance between the rawness and fury of black
metal with the refinement and sophistication
of genres as divergent as progressive rock and
jazz. It's not that black metal in general
lacks depth, but fans of the genre will agree
that even the most virtuosic groups sound like
being straight from hell.
Sigh however... are something unique. They
even sound nice, harmonious, despite almost
always keeping the typical black metal vocals.
But in a mysterious way, step by step they
show their sinister side, like a cat prowling
slowly before showing his claws.The first two
songs, for example, Purgatorium and The
Transfiguration Fear evoke a controlled
madness, if that is not meaningless.
It is a feeling of hatred towards certain
people that is so elegant, both sonically and
lyrically, that it is almost justified.
Others, for example, the magnificent Amnesia,
a colossal masterpiece, is almost sensual in
its malevolence.
Overall, Sigh is one of those bands that
elevates heavy metal as a genre with artistic
credibility. It is an experience that any
music lover should try.

A symphoprog record with black metal vocals, In Somniphobia manages to let go of its parent genres' pompousness to provide a mostly fun experience thanks to the addition of energetic bursts of jazz and the constant pace shifting. Some transitions felt clumsy, and this is messy by approach, yet I kinda vibed with this. Still ain't really my cuppa, but it's a good cuppa.
