Bumping this to 5 because I thought I already had it at 5. rA flawless, more commercial take on their trademark sound. T/T is my all-time fav QR jam.

Empire is truly "the last of the mohicans". The band would make two quality releases after this, but this is their last essential record. Pitifully, the band's quality would gradually decline after this. It's not their best album, but it sold many copies for a reason: it kicks ass. "Della Brown" is my track pick here, but the album delivers as a whole. It also opens and closes wonderfully.rPersonal Rating: 4.8

I saw them yesterday on Priest's Epitaph show. Amazing gig. They played Empire and Jet City Woman. The title track is one of their best songs and the all album is really good. Queensryche golden era.

Another great album from Queensryche. Although it does lean to more mainstream songs and is a big step down from 'Mindcrime', the songs are catchy and engaging enough to save the album.

How to ruin your band aftwr putting out one of the most influential records in metal history? This is how! What Empire is, is basically a synth-heavy, stripped and commercialised version of O:M, and it is truly sad. The guitarwork and insteumentation is completely sterilised and can barely wven be heard behing Tate. Oof.

Honestly, what spoils this record is Geoff Tate. I've never been one for '80s-esque over-the-top vocal antics, and Empire is chalk full of them. The production further mars the record, with the gated snare and "Silent Lucidity's" overloud vocal sample the biggest offenders. Empire is, due to those factors, a very dated record, and as someone who harbours no nostalgia for the bygone age which it hearkens to it is thus an unsatisfying listen. However, it is not entirely without worth: the title track, "Jet City Woman," and "Della Brown" are all good songs.

Compared to its predecessor, Empire is an embarrassing letdown. On its own rights, the album has some long, dull stretches but the stronger tracks and moments are enough to help it stand back up.
