This, Filth, and Cop mark what was the heaviest period for Swans, and make one of the heaviest album trios of any genre. The blueprint set by their debut full-length, one of repetitive, churning riffs, methodical, booming drums, gruff vocals that give way to terrified wails, and a constant atmosphere of oppressive aggravation, is used to full effect on Young God. This is particularly evident in the title-track, where Michael Gira sounds as helplessly deranged as he's ever sounded, with the wall of industrialized instrumentation burning tirelessly behind him. It's at all different from anything else they were doing at the time, but it is still quality material, and if you're a fan of the Swans of this era, you simply can't pass up this EP.

After the absolutely mind numbing, brutal releases of Filth and Cop almost back to back, Swans were already being established as one of a kind. No one had really heard anything quite as heavy or dense as Swans, and I feel like I haven't heard too much like it since then. Young God is perhaps the epitome of this early sound though, with some of the most crushing pounding noise ever made. Despite sometimes dragging though, it does its job well, and serves as an interesting point in Swans vast discography. 3.9/5
