| 3.0 good | TheWatchman71 | December 7th 24 | Disc one is likely the top candidate for the worst 77 minutes of Swans I?ve ever listened to. Formless, rambling, pointless variations of noise. No journey, no narrative - just found myself very bored throughout. Disc 2 redeems itself only slightly with renditions of The Hanging Man and Cathedrals of Heaven. Both great performances. But Away and Birthing found me listless and irritated again. Just all feels like style over substance and although you can?t call this an era - but The Beggar and Live Rope would go right at the bottom of my Swans rankings. I for one am delighted that a new era awaits with MG declaring the big sound ends with the next album. The long songs here just don?t have the heart and soul of the epics on the trilogy - and while that might be the point and they are going for something else maybe merging that aggression with drone staying fairly constant rather than peaks and troughs - I just find it all very uninspiring.
