3.5 great | FrozenFirebug | March 16th 23 | "Nobody" is a visceral artistic statement for the ages. The poorly mixed electronic hi-hats
represent the several tiny kidney stones M. Shadows was passing as he recorded his vocal take,
plinking against porcelain. The droning one-note guitar riff and midi trumpets highlight the agony
the tortured geriatric singer faces every day from chronically farting and shitting himself.
Beautiful. Raw. Honest. High hopes for this album, slated to be an avant-garde masterpiece that'll
age even more gracefully than Lulu.

5.0 classic | Brabiz | May 31st 23 | One of the strangest albums I have heard from a major rock band like this. Almost completely inaccessible, and is genuinely experimental, and will surely alienate a majority of their fans. Instrumentally this album is tight and impressive, and Shadows sounds fantastic whenever he refrains from doing that odd old man voice. This jumps around so many styles and prances through a bunch of odd times at a break neck pace, one moment there will be a jazz jam session, the next second it will break into a Daft Punk sounding track, then some thrashy stuff. I was not bored once listening to this, and I respect the hell out of it. Really entertaining. r

2.0 poor | ghostalgeist | June 4th 23 | all over the place noodling and waffling by a band that has seemingly either gotten bored or short-sightedly thought more people would care if they got 'weird' and 'experimental'. there's a few pretty solid tracks on here but good lord is this album an inconsistent and unfocused mess. I can't even say this was a 'bold and daring step in a new direction' because I couldn't even tell you if this album even *had* a direction in mind. i can almost respect the impulse to just say 'fuck it' and do whatever the hell you want, but most of the material here just isn't that interesting or multifaceted enough to warrant that experimentation. 2/5.

4.5 superb | StrizzMatik | June 3rd 23 | While it certainly has its share of flaws here and there,
LIBAD is a sonic experience from front to back that everyone
remotely into extreme music should listen to at least once.
Yes, there are problems with the mix being a little too dry
and sterile at times, Shadows is really pushing his vocal
range in some songs and the more quirky experimentation
choices don't always execute well (G, while fun, is just
awkward as hell), but it's executed so well for the most
part, you can easily overlook the flaws. The biggest hurdle
for some will be the completely balls-to-the-wall genre-
hopping and experimentation in every song, already alienating
plenty of older fans while making a bunch of new ones. But
truthfully, nothing here is THAT surprising when considering
the band's many diverse musical influences - what's amazing
is how well they execute such a disparate number of
influences seamlessly, and the fact that they swung for the
fences so late in their careers and released easily the
strangest and most inaccessible album of any mainstream metal
act in years, is extremely impressive. The sheer musicianship
and ambition here is astonishing and demands to be heard in
full as an album experience, period.

4.0 excellent | MCJACKDAHL | June 4th 23 | Not everything lands but god damn is this fun and you gotta give them props for going full send. I haven't actively listened to or been a fan of this band since the white album but Cosmic might be the best thing they've ever written.

3.5 great | samrparker12 | May 29th 23 | HOLY SHIT THIS IS ACTUALLY GOOD??? I hated the singles, given the insanely bad vocals, but the rest of the album is not half bad. The vocals are significantly better, especially on Cosmic, and the use of orchestral elements helps to pace the album out. Biggest surprise of 2023 in terms of quality, in a good way.

3.0 good | TrantaLocked | March 21st 23 | "Nobody" is a visceral artistic statement for the ages. The well mixed electronic high hats signify the experimentation the band is willing to use to keep their brilliant career aflame in an era of trap, hip-hop and nu-metal. M. Shadows has never pierced the souls of the listener quite like this, creating a beautiful mass of frequency soup and shooting it straight into our ear drums. Speaking of frequencies, the equalization of Nobody may very well be among the giants of our times; you will experience a smooth, peakless bliss of guitar and drums whether you're using your toaster's 5mm driver, or your $20,000 Edifier Home Theater monitors. Synyster Gates has shown the world that the impossible can be done on a guitar. The American Metal scene will be brought to center stage once again after Avenged Sevenfold release their latest album "Life Is But A Dream..."

3.5 great | Gary STAFF | June 6th 23 | This was instrumentally and conceptionally interesting, and personally I wholeheartedly welcomed this stylistic "shapeshift". Finally, they could step out from the "below mediocre" status with this quite unique record. I agree with everyone about the negative effect of the ...rather interesting... vocal performance, which is sometimes indeed not that good.. On the contrary, especially in the second half of the album, these vocals were quite fitting to the stylistic shift on the instrumental front. So all in all: the overall record feels surprisingly coherent, and it is a quite memorable experience (...and that something I've never thought I'd say about an Avenged Sevenfold release. Especially in a positive way.) Bold, and acceptable.

3.0 good | Trey STAFF | June 5th 23 | The first Avenged Sevenfold album I've actually liked. They pretty much wear their influences on their sleeves, which mostly seem to be Metallica, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and a few electronic-based bands. The thing is, it's not bad. Even the vocals are better than they usually are because they're not generally as nasally as on past releases.

3.0 good | Matty CONTRIBUTOR | June 3rd 23 | Instrumentally, this record is very unique and interesting and explores different facets of music that A7X haven't explored before and they do it fairly well. What holds this back altogether are the vocals. They are truly atrocious at times and it doesn't help that some of the lyrics are insanely cringe as well.

0.0 | elblauielgroc | May 12th 23 | After "We Love You", I don't know what the fuck to expect from this album. I think it's safe to say nobody expected AX7 of all bands to go this direction. The mixing sucks tho.

3.5 great | pinkgengar | July 6th 24 | Frankly this album is a lot to digest coming from A7X. Even with the buffer of The Stage inbetween. I appreciate it more on multiple listens because of how stale music has felt for me for ten years.
They were always technically proficient and sound. What happened here is the culmination of The Stage + Pinkly Smooth done very well. Their clunky self-titled album crawled so this album could run.
Effectively accessible avant garde metal, there ya go. Or wildly inaccessible A7X fandom. Whatever, enjoy.

3.0 good | BillyBrill | June 27th 23 | Listen I had never heard an a7x album before, so maybe I?m in a bad place to judge, but apparently their other music sounds nothing like this, and even though this is definitely sprawling, its also just kind of confusing and oddball without like a unique charm?? Still above average... sometimes. Very hard to rate

2.5 average | Erwann S. STAFF | June 12th 23 | There sure are many musical elements that A7X hasn't accustomed us to - 70s prog and avant-garde elements first and foremost - and yet I can't help but be bored by this mishmash of grand and epic music (M Shadows alternating between whining and whispering didn't help either). This mostly comes with how all-over-the-place and unfocused this sounds, jumping from one genre to another with no sense of construction.

1.5 very poor | chedspiffman | June 6th 23 | There are a few interesting songs and ideas on this album. There are also a few unlistenable and downright annoying songs on this album that I never want to hear again. Also is mixed oddly IMO; mainly with M Shadows' vocals.
