Floydian and Pethian, Enslaved continue to explore new territories of haunting, hypnotic, expansive progressive blackened metal. Everything has its correct placement with the title track the perfect closer.

An album so good that it made me completely reassess my feelings on the band and subsequently revisit their entire back catalogue, which has surely got to be one of the best in metal/prog metal.

I dug Utgard ngl, specially how it flows. E not so much. Axioma is a fucking banger. And this is actually a different level from Utgard. More nuanced and intricate. With more special places to explore. This sounds as if mastodon went bm in some tracks, but this has much more, from meshuggary to opeth and still leaves space for several 70s prog takes. I keep switching my fave tracks on this. Borderline 5 prog metal gem.

Enslaved doing Enslaved. Heimdal is ultimately nothing surprising for seasoned listeners, but the band's brand of blackened progressive metal is as expansive and well-written as ever. Props for the lil folky chords in "Congelia" or "Forest Dweller", as well as for the dynamic riff in the second half of the closer.

My main issue with this band has always been the dry, throaty, rasp of the vocalist. My enjoyment of each album seems to hinge on how high he's mixed and how often he growls. That hasn't changed here, but I do like this one quite a bit. The music is your typical progressive meets black metal Enslaved sound, but the vocal melodies are still improving and the music is more memorable.

Sixteen albums that are all seemingly worth a listen, legends. Enslaved can always be counted on for a great adventure through gloomy, almost cold atmospheres that still bring epic and energetic moments. Always love how they can pull off the guttural and clean vocals as about as well as anyone. Particularly fond of 'Congelia' which feels like a true dirge and a slog that relies on harsh repetitive guitars before opening up into something more grand in the last quarter, it feels like a beating. Enslaved have their signature style, they keep using it, but it never feels like people get tired of it. Good songwriting doesn't get old.
