A pretty pop album with strong 80s influences - da synths ya'know - that lacks the usually dynamic oomph previous albums sported. The more upbeat tracks manage to provide a slight-but-very-welcome ass-shaking, but the more subdued ones fly by without truly leaving an impact. It's alright though: she knows how to install a ~vibe~

Oh wow, the first Mitski project I'm really middled on. This feels really generic and not that fresh. I like the melodies/production and feel-goodness of Should've Been Me but asides from that I can't recall many highlights or stand-out moments. Whole project reminds me of the worst and most mellow Carly Rae Jepsen songs, so... still good? But just kind of whatever. Just one miss out of a discography full of bangers though, so no real hatred for this. Just kind of exists.

Its just there. Thats an ALBUM of collected songs by the artist called mitski. That is what it is. No other feelings.

i personally think laurel hell presents a lot-- 'that's our lamp' felt like a fun and interesting direction, 'everyone' has some amazing lyrics, 'love me more' feels simultaneously brutally honest while sonically suppressing itself-- but it def feels thin compared to her other albums (be the cowboy, puberty 2, and bury me at makeout creek in particular).

Unfortunately I find this rather underwhelming for a Mitski record. It might hit upon first listen, however most of the songs here only have litte relistenability. The lyrics also do not impress me that much.

I expected this to be not great, first because most people seemed disappointed by it and second because I'm not that much a fan of Mitski, turns out it's really fucking great.

I was never a big Mitski fan, to begin with, and this new album from her is not changing that in the slightest. This album is a straight-up sonic mess. Most of the tracks on here have no cohesive structure to them and her vocals don?t pair well over any of them either. It?s like she wanted this to feel like a synthesizer version of a Julia Holter record but had never listed to Julia Holter or classic synthpop. The only saving grace is the newer wave tracks at the very end actually are tolerable to listen to, but otherwise, I can?t really sit through this.

'Laurel Hell', being Mitski's glitziest album, tries its hands on various old-school pop pastiches, ultimately failing at that and dragging her song-writing down with it.
