"(She's A) Universal Emptiness", "Mona Lisa, Mother Earth" and "Jane Mary, Cry One Tear" are
sheer brilliance. Sure, this has filler, like "Saved" and "Remember Who You Are", but it
doesn't keep it from being brilliant at times and overall a great record. It's the Swans
showcasing a poppier version of their trademark a priori Annihilator/Soundtracks sound.

This LP gets a rightfully dodgy reception, but the years have been kind to this gothic-tinged, folksy, apocalyptic-world-music version of the Swans, and it holds up very well 27 years after it's initial release. In some some ways it bridges the cavernous gap between 80's Swans, 90's Swans and Angels of Light, but it's still a unique LP in their catalog and one I'd recommend, especially if you've already digested other Swans work.

We've seen swans slowly strip away the original industrial brutality of their early works with each release since cop, but on this record swans completely strip away the Asperity in favor of a comfortable, great folk and art rock record. Some really killer songwriting on this album. Just another great record that shows swans's versatility. Some have gripes about the production on this record, but I have no problem with it. r¯_(?)_/¯, to summarize, swans deliver yet another gratifying album, this time in the form of a more accessible folk and art rock record.

Supposedly bored with putting out masterpiece after masterpiece year after year, Gira finally recorded a mediocre album. That's not to say there's no potential on The Burning World (quite the opposite, given that his next attempts at a more commercial sound gave thoroughly satisfying results), but it seems wasted here: the songwriting is decent, but far from perfect and the flat, colourless production just kills whatever passion might have been hidden in the rushed performance.

Children of God was, simply put, a thought-provoking, emotional masterpiece. It had taken in the gothic strokes of Joy Division, the pounding brutality of past Swans, and some absolutely beautiful folk music to create a unique masterpiece. But, I highly doubt anyone saw this coming. Maybe if they knew Swans were going to be on a major label, but holy crap is this different. By stripping absolutely every element of their past heaviness, Swans simply made a folk (rock?) album. While it's easily their most accessible album, it also sounds rather overproduced, soft, and full of filler. Sure, songs such as God Damn the Sun and The River That Runs With Love Won't Run Dry are fantastic, it doesn't feel good as a whole package, rarely exceeding the "good" level. There is potential in here, but it isn't used to it's fullest, which is where the album falls short. Michael Gira himself abhors this record, and it's easy to see why, since this is probably the weakest Swans album there is. But, despite all odds, it's solid enough to earn a 3. So overall, a disappointing affair, but some gems are in here if you're willing to wade through some filler. 3.1/5
