No one's kidding when they say there isn't anything quite like early Swans records. What has been described as "the pinnacle of Swans' brutality", Cop is certainly a monolithic and destructive record. Surprisingly, though, it is fairly sparse in its instrumentation, mainly consisting of methodical drums, industrial guitars and other noises that sound like the inside of a factory. The middle of the album is very well done, with four straight punches to the face in the form of "Why Hide", "Clay Man", "Your Property", and the title-track. Michael Gira is once again the driving force, and is quite unnerving on the record as well as being lyrically adept. The problem with the album is that most of the songs follow the same formula, and sometimes bleed together as a result. However, the homogenous aspect of the songwriting is pummeled by how well done the tracks really are. Surely, Cop is not an album to overlook if you are a Swans fan, or a fan of noise rock in general.

Having embarked on doing the full Swans discography for the first time- this one was one hell of a ride. And not something I?d look to repeat. Like listening to hell on Earth. Glad I went there, not going back!

Can see why people like it and is certainly an experience. However I find it too monotonous to
warrant repeated visits and the drumming irritated me. If I want crushing rhythms and dissonant,
heavy guitar riffs I would prefer to listen to Godflesh but if you are into abrasive white noise
drones and crushing, primeval rhythms then by all means give this a listen.

Out-bleaking debut Filth is a feat in itself, but revamping all possibilities+expectations when it comes to full-blown low-end vile negativity in the form of sound? Quite literally a towering obsidian mass from which there is no hope, this one earned Swans a Lifetime Achievement Award: servility and barbarism trudge rampant, excruciation is epitomized, and front-man/beast Michael Gira's speciality soulless drone-chant murmurs and strikingly harsh growls-n-groans sound straight from the dingy assembly line and piss-stained prison floor, respectively. And before it shifts to psycho-militaristic bellows, the title-track actually allows for some plainly spoken scorn; which is not only unfortunately warranted and all too relevant, but also an admission -- that despite appearances, he's no match for the biggest brute on the block: "Nobody beats 'em like a cop with a club".

Definitely have to be in a certain mood to listen to this one. It's a great album when I'm feeling
it, but only good the other times. I prefer filth over this one.

Lyrically, Cop is one of the most upsetting things you'll ever hear. Unfortunately, the music is, for the most part, dull and
uninteresting. Most of the tracks like "Clay Man" and "Job" just sound the same. However, there are some really good
songs, "Half Life" and "Your Property", specifically.
