Crimson's third effort, it's least-known album, ends up being one of the best. It's a shame Robert Fripp hates it... (update: he likes it and wishes you were here to see it)

Lizard is definitely a true listening pleasure. The obvious highlight is the sprawling title track, but the album is just fantastic on the whole.

The 666th rating for this album, must be a sign. Very hard to decide between 4.5 and 4, but it's secondary, this is a really good album. Fans of the band should definitely not miss this.

King Crimson is just one of those bands whose discography is received in a half and half fashion, as many classic rock bands who continued for decades are. In a critic's eyes, about 30-40% of Crimson's discography is undeniably outstanding, and the other percentage just falls to mixed reviews. This album, Lizard, is usually considered the 'best of the worst' in KC's discography. In the best, but at the bottom of the list nonetheless. I cannot figure out the reason for this, as this is undoubtedly in Crimson's top 3. I will never understand why this record is not valued better. Sure at times it may be 'too weird' (even for King Crimson) and this may be their least accessible album, but it contains some of there most intriguing arrangements. This album is brutally difficult to get into, which is one of the reasons it is slightly discredited, but after intense listening, I have come to the conclusion that this one of Crimson's best works, only being surpassed by their groundbreaking debut album. Say what you want about Lark's Tongues and Discipline, and while those are still fantastic, Lizard proves triumphant.

An odd record for King Crimson spanning everything from Free Jazz to Circus inspired music. And it's pretty muuch perfect, this record is extremely confusing and it may need a few listens to get into, but then it reveals it's magic. Especially the 23 minute title track feels like a fantasy epic

Weird shit and I love it. King Crimson take the full leap of faith into Avant-Garde with a very strong jazz and wind-instrument focus. A mammoth 20-minute weird fucking title-track is the crown of this oberall wonderful record.

The instrumentation is spectacular especially the trombone, flute and saxophone sprinkled throughout the record. Extra credit for the appearance of Jon Anderson's vocal delivery on Prince Rupert Awakes, the 1st of 4 segments to the impressive Lizard suite.

Taking a decent step in another direction, moving a bit further away from the sounds comprising In the Court of the Crimson King, Lizard is a jazz-soaked trip with plenty of prog to stay relevant in the scene ? even if it was more in the vein of their peers than some newfound sound. This is still an entertaining record, though more so in certain areas than others. What?s left is an effect of scattered songs, giving the record a wandering feel/sound. More sporadically composed than its predecessors ? which should be saying something ? Lizard feels like a more forgettable record in a pretty legendary discography.

Finally Fripp and his band get it together! Nothing here sounds like anything done before by the band or anyone else. This nearly makes up for the last album's complete worthlessness. Only two of the songs here are particularly good, but one is twenty four minutes long and the bad songs are at least interesting and creative so I have a hard time saying much of anything worse of them.
The album is much less symphonic sounding and has a much broader use of Jazz instruments and stylings. The first song, Cirkus, is the best here. Three tracks go by quickly, and the sidelong epic, Lizard, begins. It has several parts, and not every one of them is great but many passages are well performed and soothing.
Overall, this is King Crimson's best record up to this point. 3.5 / 5
