An expert level crash course in how to ruin a promising metalcore album full of cool riffs with annoying samples, too many WWE rockstar energy butt metal anthems, and a dork with a modular synth who feels the need to constantly derail everything.

The riffs are overall pretty decent, however it?s full of weird cut-offs, samples, industrial moments, and some
really bad tracks like the title-track , Who Am I and Sulfur Surrounding.

The band just consistently improves from record to record. Loved their work in 'King' and 'Forever' (the latter being my gateway to the rest of their repertoire). The way they used industrial/electronic elements such as abrupt breaks and synths seemed much more meticulously and deliberately melded in than the more chaotic Forever, so I'd say the comments about this being more comparable to 'NIN, but metal' is pretty justifiable. rHalf of the tracks seem to be as bombastic and heavy and hard-hitting as their peers in the modern revival of the Metallic Hardcore scene (which is par for the course now really), and the other half effectively veers into more a more melodic direction with catchier, almost anthem-like hooks. r

Cool metalcore riffs but eh you gotta stop with all these samples. Compared to, say, H.A.Q.Q., which also added glitches to its transcendental black metal, here the glitches are basically annoying af as they are placed randomly and do not emphasize any riff or growl. Plus, they add pauses from time to time, and while it might seem like a good idea, here I can't help but be like wtf dude why did you randomly stop the muzak for 1 second. It's full of ideas, but half of these are half-assed, and the other half annoys more than it amazes. Shame because when it pounds, it does povnd, especially when they manage to replicate their atmospheric brand of grungy industrial metalcore. Thus, the best bits are the ones we already heard from them, and the worst ones are their new sound. Great. Plus it's their lengthiest output, so it does get tiring in the end.

Not as bad as expected and more cohesive than forever in any sense. Not quite up to par with I Am King but they managed to create a disturbing atmosphere with all the NIN industrial bits and the addition of more clean vocals and whispering. The songs are also easier to digest and not fully chopped up as they used to

Step by step, putting some more industrial and grunge sauce in the hardcore formula, Underneath is the perfect continuation of Forever, spending less time with ambience, and upping the dynamics in the band's songwriting. Though some songs in there I can live without, I still find them smartly written and interesting

In the process of induling further into their brand of experimentalism, Code Orange have also thrown away a noticeable amount of the fun factor of their last release in favour of some really questionable structuring and mixing choices. For one, the production on this record is so blaring and brickwalled that it feels like my ears going numb, which is made worse by the fact that there's a lot of very abrupt changes in volume throughout many of these tracks that only makes the sound of them even more grating whenever these pop up. There's also many, almost seemingly random bits of digital silence and glitches spread throughout the tracklist as well, which don't really add any flavour or don't sync up all that well rhythmically either with the riffs, and it just ends up taking me out of the music pretty much everytime. These things where my least favourite part about the last record, and sadly the band have further convinced themselves that aesthetically and artistically this is what represents them the best. It's a shame, because I think underneath all this self-indulgent mess and horrid production there's a fun, made-for-the-pit metalcore record somewhere. Apart from that, I do enjoy some of the more angsty, soaring choruses by half-frontwoman Reba Meyers that make it onto some of these tracks like Sulfur Surrounding and Underneath, because I generally like her vocal timbre and melodically I think these tracks are pretty captivating.

Honestly, I was surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did. I?m not normally into stuff that is this frenetic and in-your-face, but I haven?t been able to get enough of this since it came out. The song-writing keeps you guessing, the digital approach to organic instrumentation is fascinating and immersive, and the lyrics are sinister, dark, and confrontational. Reba?s clean vocals elevate her to one of the best clean vocalists in the genre and Jami Morgan can absolutely howl with the best of them. Fantastic blend of metal core, hardcore, industrial metal, grunge, and shoegaze.
