4.0 excellent | Iai EMERITUS | June 27th 06 | I spent roughly 5 years of my life under the impression that Nirvana sucked, and it was all Nevermind's fault. In Utero taught me the error of my ways, which begs the question - just how can a band make two albums so different from each other back to back? Nevermind was whiny, insipid, uninspired drivel. In Utero is a work of near-genius. Is Steve Albini really that good?! Whatever. Aside from beginning and ending with two of the band's best songs (ignoring the bonus track), In Utero boasts "Heart-Shaped Box", too - a contendor for best song of the 90s. Even the definite low-point, the dreary "Rape Me", isn't that bad - certainly better than the majority of their previous songs. For one album only, Nirvana kicked ass. HARD.

3.0 good | mandan | March 11th 14 | In Utero is neither fantastic album nor terrible album. It's just an album, plain and simple. If you're into repetitive punkish numbers, this might be in your league. Otherwise, steer clear from this.

1.0 awful | Wolfman | May 10th 09 | Nirvana crashed into the music scene in 1991 with the realease of the titanic "Nevermind", a unquestioned classic. "Nevermind" did not have one flaw (Stay away was the worst song on it, and it was still decent) and will always be considered one of the best albums of all-time. Next, Nirvana comes out with "In Utero".... ugh...
"In Utero" is basically Nirvana's "St. Anger", just with 2 good songs. Nirvana was always a throughtogether of random riffs lyrics and drum beats, but Kurt took it way to far with this (in particular the first 2 songs). Kurt would later shoot himself, and i never understood that untill i heard the album. With "In Utero", it was obvious he was trying to commit carreer suicide.
Here is track listings with descriptions and ratings:
1. Serve the Servants: A disgrace to music in general. The opening riff is pretty good, but Kurt butchers it with hazy lyrics and terrible vocals. Most people would see the chorus as the strong point in the song, and it is the best part, however, it is still horrible. The sining is decent, but the way it contrasts with the guitar in the backround is a bad combination. And the ending is just horrendus. Kurt holds a long note while the guitar rings out and Dave grohl just bangs his drums mindlessly. Just plain Terrible. RATING: 1/10
2. Scentless Apprentice: This is actually even worse than the first song. Worst opening riff ever. The way Kurt holds his bar chords and sings over it has been known to make people physically ill. The Bridge riff is decent, but the backround music sucks. The chorus is irritating to say the least. Kurt did what made him famous: Scream, but when he tries to melt it into the music... Basically, this is one of the worst songs of all-time. RATING: 0/10
3. Heart Shaped Box: This is where Nirvana begins to regain form. The verses are among the best Nirvana ever did. My problem is how annoying that chorus is. The first few times it is enjoyable, but as you listen to it more, it gets worse. The Solo is pretty good, though. And the outro is great, the last note is crap, but everything else is flawless. RATING: 7/10
4. Rape Me: Convroversial Title, but okay song. The begining and verses are crap, but the chorus has a lot of the great qualites from "Nevermind" that made it such a classic. The chorus is the most important part of the song (assuming the song has one) In the middle the song become crap for a short period of time. Basically, a average song. RATING: 5/10
5. Francis Farmer will have her revenge on Seattle: A nice intro is ruined by a peice of crap. There are way to many screaching notes and Kurt gives arguably his worst vocal perfomance of his short carreer. RATING: 2/10
6. Dumb: Another good song. The verses are crap up untill the last line, it's almost magical how Kurts crap vocals suddenly turn good at the last line. I love the part when there is a violin in the backround. The last 30 seconds or so is somewhat annyoing, but its a pretty good song nonetheless. RATING: 6/10
7. Very Ape: The riff is *** already, so why add the vocals? The entire song is almost unbearable, and could be used as a torture method. In particular the ending is the worst part, as it resembles the album as a whole. RATING: 1/10
8. Milk It: What a wierd combination of music. I at least give Kurt props for being creative, but i still have to say what the hell were you thinking? Anyone who heard this on the radio in 93 would have shut it off immediatly. That would have been the smart thing too, as the song gets worse and worse as it goes on. RATING: 2/10
9. Pennyroyal Tea: I love the opeing part with the acoustic guitar. Why does Kurt have to ruin it? People talk of the beauty in this song: What beauty? The Guitar is great but Kurts singing is as bad as ever (Well, not quite as bad as "Francis Farmer"...) The heavy parts are absolutly horrendus, and some of the worst moments on the album... and that's saying something. RATING: 1/10
10. Radio Freindly Unit Shifter: I said Scentless Apperntice had the worst opening riff ever, but when it comes to the worst openings ever, This truely takes the cake. Seriously what the ***? And it goes on for 30 seconds. 30 UNBEARABLE seconds. I hate the screaching notes after that, but when this really becomes the *** we know it as is when Kurt sings. He sings over the screaching notes and makes the verse almost as unbearable as the first 30 seconds. And like most songs on the album, THE ENDING SUCKS. RATING: 0/10
11. Tourettes: Now i consider this song to be crap. The vocals are all over the place, and the drum beat is terrible, as is the baseline. But unlike "Scentless Apperntice" or "Radio Freindly Unit Shifter", "Touretts is enjoyable. If you are into Grunge or alternative stuff, this is the perfect song for you. But seeing as a good percentage of people do not like grunge, i will have to give the song a low score. RATING: 4/10
12. All Apologies: For awhile, i never thought Kurt could write music as well as Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. Then i heard this: "All Apologies" really turned the tide Nirvana's way in the raging war in my head between PJ and Nirvana for best band of the 90's. (Since then i have heard "Black However.) "All Aopologies" is the highpoint of Nirvana's Carreer. It showed that Kurt could write something for everybody, not just rebellious teens but adults as well. The opeing riff grabbs your attention and Kurts vocal perfomance does not dissapoint. The midpoint where Kurt goes "Yeah Yeah Yeah yeah..." and all the instruments turn up is one of the great moments in rock and roll history. There has been a lot of fuss over "Smells like Teen Spirit", but "All Apologies" is Easily Nirvana's best song. RATING: 10/10
So all in all, don't waste your money. Just go onto Itunes and buy "Dumb", "Heart Shaped Box" and "All Apologies". You could through "Tourettes" in there to if your that type of person. You'll save yourself a lot of earaches that way.

4.5 superb | HarHarFromAfar | January 24th 08 | Nirvana is overrated? OK, so is Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC, Metalica, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones . . . it's all subjective.
I was not a drooling infant in 1991, so I remember the shit on the radio before Nevermind. Seeing a Nirvana video for the first time made something click in my brain that no music on the radio at that time ever did. You see, the charts were dominated by shit like Bobby Brown, Color Me Bad, and NKOTB. I think 'overrated' depends on time and place.
Cobain wasn't happy with Nevermind . .. he thought it sounded too slick and overproduced. Listen to their first album, Bleach or seek out some bootlegs (and there are lots of really good soundboard bootlegs around if you look hard enough) and you'll see where he was coming from. After the success of Nevermind, it would have been easy and profitable to release a copy cat album, but the band went off in a lot of different directions on In Utero instead. As a fan, I really appreciate that. Some tracks worked out better than others, but as a whole, the album is a great listening experience. I haven't heard anybody control tones and distortion in any kind of interesting way since In Utero (well, Tom Morello and some others lay it down, but not the way Cobain did).
I give In Utero a 4.5 and not higher simply because I'm sure the next album would have blown my socks off but, sadly, we'll never know.

4.5 superb | MAGNIFICENT | October 27th 13 | This isn't Nevermind. This is not the average grunge music you'd expect from Nirvana. This is not a mainstream album. This isn't music everyone enjoys. But it is timeless. It is the album Kurt Cobain always wanted to make. The musical shape of Kurt Cobain's mind. The single most weird album ever recorded. Chaotically intense, awkwardly beautiful. In Utero is a grower (no perversity intended). It grows in you. And when it does, it will make your knowledge about what was weird vanish completely. Weird, huh?

5.0 classic | Jared Floryan | December 30th 14 | Sonically flawless and less user-friendly than Nevermind, Nirvana's third and final studio album is just the way it should be. Think of In Utero as one 'fuck you' to the music industry at the time this was first released and call it the greatest achievement of your life. Kurt Cobain's scathing lyrics and deliberately apathetic vocal performance will one day come back from Heaven, and Dave Grohl can eventually stop being a pretender and monkey wrench simultaneously.

5.0 classic | happyfunball | October 29th 12 | This is Nirvana's anti-corporate rock fuck you. A raw uncompromising grungy masterpiece of noisy garage alternative rock. I can just see the blank stares of DGC executives upon initially listening to this monolith. The perfect and carefully arranged sounds of Nevermind being thrown out the window and replaced with raw emotion and vitriol toward the recording industry which made them household names to begin with. If the "mainstream" was the wrist, Nirvana was the razor. Oh well, at least they could count on Eddie Vedder.

Instead I'm stuck with what seems like a handful of leftovers that weren't nearly good enough for Nevermind. Where 'Teen Spirit' made me want to rock out and 'Come as you are' made me angsty as hell, this made me want to fall asleep. 2.2/5

4.5 superb | GreenKoopa1 | December 12th 11 | "I miss the comfort in being sad," Kurt Cobain grovels harshly on the excellent mid-tempo rocker, "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle," a sparse and raw tune that typifies the overall sound of "In Utero." Cobain and company establish a rougher-edged sound right away on "In Utero," rawer than the previous Nevermind album, though not as raw as the band's debut, Bleach, perhaps somewhere in between. The chorus to "Serve the Servants," the opening song, is as catchy as any previous Nirvana tune, just somewhat more plodding and low key. Inescapable from this great disc is the slower, thicker, even woodsy sound that may not grab a hold of listeners like the previous album so overwhelmingly did.

4.5 superb | TheCompilationMan768 | July 3rd 11 | If Nevermind was overated, In Utero certainly is underated. Whilst many of the songs on the former were loud, ugly and overblown, the majority of the tracks here (with the exception of the undesirable Tourette's) are mellow, quiet and damn beautiful. Highlights include the sweet ballads All Apologies and Heart Shaped Box and the crazy, honest Rape Me. Grunge rarely got better.

0.0 | ObeyTheCowGod | January 22nd 11 | Overwhelmed by sudden success, Nirvana promised to take a harsher, more abrasive route on their second major-label release. Enlisting Chicago-based noise maven Steve Albini (of Big Black fame), Kurt Cobain and company succeeded in producing a record that was violent, disillusioned, and deeply moving. Every song reads like a commentary on the cost of fame ("Serve the Servants") and the unhealthy relationship between performer and fan ("Milk It"). Of course, they might all simply be about Courtney Love. Gossip aside, there is no denying the sheer power of Cobain's songwriting, his singing, and the band's amazing, visceral power. Cobain even manages a John Lennon-like mantra at the end of the heart-wrenching "All Apologies." "All in all is all we are," he intones repeatedly, only for Cobain that's no consolation.

4.0 excellent | wunnsburgian | May 31st 10 | A great album - the darker side of Nirvana is revealed and the broken-amp guitar distortion can't be beaten. Cobain's love of punk shines through here, but the melody from Nevermind remains in tracks like Serve the Servants and Heart Shaped Box - especially in All Apologies (and many others for that matter). I'm torn between Nevermind and In Utero but the dark, thrashy side of Nirvana here is starting to win me over...

4.5 superb | Foreskin Fondler | June 24th 06 | I agree with people who say that Nirvana is overrated, but I had to give their two most famous albums a 4.5 simply because of these were the first two albums I purchased and Nirvana was the band that got me into music and guitar playing.

3.0 good | Gene Gol CONTRIBUTOR | December 6th 24 | I must admit, Nirvana either bores or annoys me, but 'In Utero' certainly does not. I find it an excess of the 90s (an era I care little about), but I am glad there once was a time where music like this was the peak of relevance.

4.5 superb | platttt | March 8th 24 | As far as grunge goes, I feel like this was the peak of the movement. There were undeniably some great releases beforehand (see Badmotorfinger, Nevermind, Dirt, Ten and many others) and after (see Superunknown, Dragline, Jar of Flies, Gentlemen, and many others), but none of those albums were a statement as large as this. Nevermind sold millions of copies, and Nirvana reacted violently to the mainstream attention. Working with Steve Albini was a great harbinger of Nirvana's intentions, making a noisy, angry, grunge record regardless of public pressure to take things in a more pop-oriented direction.

5.0 classic | JuriHan | October 4th 23 | This is literally a perfect album to me, in every way. The noisiness, the abrasiveness, the experimentalism, the abstract lyrics that actually mean something past Kurt's fucking around, the riffs, the atmosphere, the aesthetic. It's just perfect. There's literally no bad or boring songs on this project, the weakest is somehow the intro track and it just gets better from there. People love to say something like Nevermind was the pinnacle of the 90's, but easily it's this to me. This reeks of cynicism of everything around you and this beginning to open up and understand mental illness and beginning to be okay with talking about it. This is genre-defying (as well as genre-defining.) damn-near and proof Kurt was such a loss and a once-in-a-lifetime artist. Every song just sounds classic in every way possible and it's this sort of nastiness that feels like it shouldn't of been possible in the mainstream.

4.5 superb | imyourzer0 | August 16th 22 | Fiery and perfect conclusion to an opinions aside, legendary career. Drums are actually really good. Truly impressive the quality and density of sound band gets being a three piece. Wish bass was turned up just a little bit more, so good on some tracks. Balances the sensitivity and the rage the band has explored in the past extremely well. Dumb and Milk It might be my favorite tracks and they?re at very ends of this spectrum. Even though tapping into a more post-hardcore and noise rock sound (which I?m a huge sucker for) each track manages to be supremely catchy. Should have been just the start to Nirvanas potential. 9/10

4.5 superb | Deadwing2112 | December 15th 19 | Following up Nevermind is an insurmountable task and yet Nirvana eloquently pulls it off while staying true to its live and authentic sound. All Apologies is the best - and saddest - sound off in rock history.

4.5 superb | Nicksput | December 9th 18 | In Utero is a devastator; a preview to destruction. Nirvana draws from some of their lesser known influences on this one, and even though there really isn't that much of a difference between this and Nevermind ( I don't really feel like the song structures differ too much from one another, and plenty of these songs would have fit well on that record), the vibe is just a bit more tense. The musicianship on here is improved as well, even when the band is intentionally writing music that can be hard to digest. Kurt's frustration and contempt with the music industry and some of his new fans was on full display here. His apathy is apparent from the second he opens his mouth on Serve the Servants. Still, at it's core In Utero is a collection of straight forward songs that work just as well as individual pieces and as part of a full album. The music is just a bit darker this time around, with a little less hope.

0.0 | RYMsfullofscenesters | September 27th 13 | I like how they got a lot of kids to listen to stuff like Flipper and Scratch Acid. I don't like so much how they weren't as interesting as any of their influences. Kurt couldn't seem to make a verse flow into a chorus in a way that wasn't mechanical and unintentionally ugly. Like "here comes the pensive brooding part! Here comes the loud emotional part!" It's the kind of babyish songwriting that totally put me off rock in the 90s.
