There's practically an industrial metal vibe to this and it suits them really nicely. It's their best album with Marcus, and might be their best album overall.

Better than other Marcus albums IMO. The emphasis
on electronics in most songs really works to the
band's benefit, whether they're pulsating and
lively (Eclipse, 4D) or suit a more ambient
purpose (Rift, Sleepless). A really pleasant
surprise considering their previous albums' style
kinda wore off me after a while.

I get why some guys are pissed off a bit at the whole sound shift going on, but for me it?s their most interesting and my fav album of theirs since Singularity, def their best one with Marcus so far. 4D?s one of their best jams in a while.

Electronic elements end up drowning out a lot of other parts. Lyrics kind of suck. Marcus's vocals are somewhat buried behind everythiny else and that causes them to lose a lot of the effect, low screams lose their impact and the clean sections of jinn lose the lighter more beautiful parts. Its not as bad as others have made it out to be. Its just middle of the road to me

Some absolute banging songs with some very hollow weak songs. It needed more meaty riffs to fill in the gaps, then I would've loved this entire album. Also the vocals are mixed badly in a few tracks.

THIS ALBUM ABSOLUTELY BANGS. I love it so much, its heavy, grungy, the industrial sound is super nostalgic and fits these guys so well. I'm super super happy they went in this direction. Every song is incredible.

Not bad, but also not a good album. Too many electrical parts, not enough metal. Still quite enjoyable. I've listened to worse albums before - but also to much better ones.

Pretty enjoyable listen, definitely a big departure from their earlier stuff but they pull it off well other than some outdated electronics that sound like they're lifted right out of 2011, and the second half of the album is a little bit of a clusterfuck, but the material as a whole is pretty good and Nolly's production is of course spectacular.

The songwriting and the songs are pretty good, but it's the bland instrumentals that's dragging it down: Drums are way more simplified from their earlier stuff and guitars are clearly taking a step back, letting the synths flourish a bit more, losing some technicality in the process. Also it just kinda goes full throttle and never stops. It doesn't have a song like "Weightless" that slows everything down perfectly for a moment.

While it may be a "fresh" sound for the band, this album lazily borrows from industrial and djent styles without adding anything unique to it. Alien ends up clumsily following in the footsteps of the wave of industrial and "nu" metalcore albums of recent. Somehow the synthesized sounds have a more memorable presence than the actual instruments they are playing.

Where Node and Mesmer saw flickers of Northlane's potential, Alien is a blazing inferno. Lead singer Marcus delves into deep-seated parts of his past, and the lyrics, imagery and overall sounds is phenomenal for it. It's pretty terrific, the gap that was bridged between earlier albums and this one Top-notch with a lot of replay value.

Unfortunately, I thought I was going to like Alien more than I did. The ideas here are intriguing and the experimentation shown across these eleven songs offers an interesting route forward for the band, but the execution falls flat.

Talking Heads is great and there are definitely a few standout bangers in here. Norhtlane is just kind of boring when they try to go for a more moody song which happens a few times on this album. Didn't care for lyrics on some of the songs either, particularly on Details Matter. Good album, but not much more, I'll probably only come back to a couple of tracks on here.

Very pleasantly surprised. While Node and Mesmer were good albums, they needed something to serve Marcus Bridge's talents much more directly. Alien is focused on song structuring and effective hooking with each song. Lots of memorable moments to make up for the occasionally average section or song and a more ambitious industrial injection into the still very prominent prog/metalcore style that got them where they are today. With such a great new formula, this feels like it is only the beginning for the brand new Northlane.

Despite some good moments, specially Freefall (which is Northane going full Architects), but the album overall is pretty boring specially lyrically. The electronic components of the tracks don't do anything good for their sound, it just shows a lack of imagination, making it seem like they wrote a boring album realised it and tried to "bring me the horizon" it.
