Death Metal doesn't get any better than this. When the crushing slow parts come in, your skull gets crushed into a million pieces. When the fast parts come, your spine gets snapped and your neck is rendered useless. The vocals are perfect for the music, and you can't help but growl right along to songs like "Ridden With Disease". Everything from the raw bass, pounding drums, and filthy guitar tone just screams "DEATH METAL!"
Old-school and raw, just the way it should be. Classic.

Easily the best Autopsy album... why? Because of Steve DiGiorgio. Most of Autopsy's work pretty much sounds the same... even their new stuff... which just benefits from better production values. The thing that separates Severed Survival from the rest is Steve's standout bass playing. Everything from his overall unique approach, the dissonant bass chords and his floppy fretless bass tone add to the overall sound of the record. Another thing I love is the blazin lead guitar tone. If this album had the rhythm tone of some of the Swedish bands like Dismember and Entombed this record would really stand out. Overall this is a great early death metal record (1989!) that everyone should have in their collection. I also like the "surgeon" cover art better than the dude getting ripped to pieces art... even though that is pretty cool and hellraiser-esque.

Wonderful OSDM. Chunky, heavy and based purely around ugliness. First half is brilliant, but then Autopsy hit a massive mid-album slump and the second half just sounds like a rehashed version of the first. Unfortunate. Prps for the absolutely massive bass sound, a generally very overlooked and neglected instrument in the early DM scene.

If Possessed was the Grandfather, and Death the father, then Autopsy would be the middle child that no one noticed at first, but was the best all along.
Autopsy's older brother Morbid Angel follows the technical route, being fast and having complex riffs and some intricate solo work, but lacking any real B movie aspects that makes death metal, well, deadly. The Youngest of the three is Cannibal Corpse. They are all about brutality and gore and blood and puss, but lack any depth to call themselves serious.
Here is where Autopsy succeeds where his brothers did not, finding a correct balance between gory lyrics and atmosphere and intricate, interesting riffs. Faster thrashier songs like the opening Charred Remains or the title track show a lot of what makes death metal great: fast, unrelenting and unnerving riffs and eerie, gory brutal lyrics presented by screaming them into your face. It's sort of like getting hit by a frozen shit-ball thrown from a low flying plane. Some of Severed Survival's slower songs like Service for a Vacant Coffin and Ridden with Disease stretch your skin and shiver your bones with it's gruesome tales of morbid debauchery. Much like rotting on death row.
Autopsy is one of the greatest metal bands to have ever existed, and I'm not making that up. If you haven't heard them yet you must immediately.

Raw, aggressive, and primal are only a few of the words that could be used to describe Autopsy's Severed Survival. Everything about this album is absolutely crushing. The guitar tones are overly distorted and the riffs are simple yet powerful. At times they can come across as a bit sloppy, but not to the extent that it takes away from the songs. The bass can be heard throughout, which is nice, even if for the most part it does just follow the guitars. The primal aspect of the album comes from he drumming. Simple beats ravage the album, however the drums always sound as though they are being abused mercilessly. Lyrically the album is lacking a bit. However, one shouldn't expect much more from Autopsy. All in all Severed Survival is a fine death metal album and is more than worth checking out if you are a fan of raw, old school death metal.
