This this is a real piece of work. While there are some highlights, like the truly excellent opening track and 'High as a Kite' (I even like Living in LA), everything else falls to dirty under composed yet overproduced mediocrity. The album has no central core or theme so the entire thing feels disjointed and aimless. It even closes with a track that had no business even being considered for the album. It's like a worse Pacific Daydream, taking the same dreary pop aesthetic but instead going 20 different directions with no goal.

Yikes - this album has always rubbed me the wrong way, but at this point it's become
easily one of my least favourite Weezer albums. While Pac Daydream had some godawful
songs, it also had some standouts, and overall I defiantly didn't hate it as much as
everyone else. This thing? This is like the opposite of EWBAITE - a fantastic album with
an epic scope and tonnes of passion and heart. Every song on Black feels super slow,
there are plenty of terrible instrumental and production choices (what is with the drum
machines?), there is zero passion or spontaneity, and the whole thing just feels so
clunky and soulless. Occasionally there is some style or substance, like on "Can't Knock
the Hustle," and "High as a Kite," but I really hope Van Weezer injects some life back
into this band, because this album just did nothing for me.

Personally, I find that there are many groups/solo artists with great careers (who are sometimes legends for some) who persevere to stay alive by regularly delivering turnips. Weezer is one of the most striking examples. Apart from Everything Will Be Alright in the End and a not bad The White Album, Weezer has been suffering from disappointments and very average albums since Pinkerton. There is probably some material to make a little best of post-90's, but for me it's often the approach that makes them turn upside down. As on Black Album, the band has in mind to propose an ultra commercial rock by going to vampirize what is done by other bands and other genres. Here they have almost no foot in the rock that made their identity.
