Enslaved's Vertebrae is a near perfect combination of progressive rock and black metal. The melllow, melodic passages on the album flow smoothly into the more aggressive passages and make for a very interesting, very well done collection of music. Instrumentally everything is well executed and tight, without becoming robotic or stale. Vocally, the cleans are solid (not perfect, but solid) and the aggressive vocals are clear and understandable. From start to finish this album is an amazing listen and will satisy any fan of their earlier work, as well as any fan of progressive rock or black metal in general.

Yes, it's a little samey in parts. Yes, it takes itself far too seriously. Yes, this is black metal. Having said that, this is still by far one of the best metal releases of the year- consistent, flowing, energetic and just a little bit ridiculous.

I don't think this band knows how to make a bad record. Nice continuation from Ruun. The Floyd-y influence is even
bigger on this record, but without sounding contrived or forced. Very natural and spacey.

Stringing together black and progressive metal influences all without sacrificing the need for such a perpetually dry atmosphere, Enslaved's Vertebrae is a bit too great in regards to instrumental power and uniformity. What the album may lack in superb production, it makes up for composition depth as well as the darkened emotion pouring out from Grutle Kjellson's vocal stylings.

This is easily the weakest album from enslaved's prog days, but it's still amazing. Excellent song writing, nuanced style, and interesting production give this album a interesting atmosphere

The first two tracks start out a bit dull, not bad, just nothing that good. Ground picks up that slack a little. New Dawn is a really fast and kick ass song too. I wasn't a big fan of the ambient droning riffs, as it just gets a tad stale to me. Overall, I think this album is lesser than the sum of its parts. While the songs are generally pretty good, most of them seem to drag on too long for their own good and struggle to distinguish themselves from the rest of this album's songs. Probably better listened to as just individual songs once in awhile as opposed to consecutively as an album.

While the excellent performances across all instruments are let down somewhat by a subpar production job, this doesn't stop Enslaved's Vertebrae from being a great record. The guitar playing is particularity impressive, with the jaw-dropping solo on track three "Ground" providing one of the record's best moments. Other highlights include the first minute and a half of opener "Clouds" and the entirety of track five "New Dawn." There are some negative things about this album, however: as I mentioned before, the production is disappointing (particularly on the harsh vocals), and I don't like how many of the tracks begin with the sounds of sliding guitars or other random noises, as they don't add anything to the record. 3.7

It's all about production with Vertebrae. Had the vocals been produced as well as they are on Axioma Ethica Odini, this would have received somewhere between a 4 and 5.

This is a pretty mind-blowing record, not what I expected it to be but I'm pleasantly surprised with the outcome. Like others have mentioned, some comparisons to Floyd, Opeth, etc...A lot of layers here, a lot to take in, but overall a pretty intense record. I haven't really heard much else by Enslaved, just odds and ends, and I know the rest is different, but this alone will have me checking out everything else they have.
