Of Funkadelic's sophomore effort, George Clinton had this to say: "It was an attempt to see if we could cut a whole album while we're all tripping on acid." In effect, this album seems decidedly less focused and well-rounded than their self-titled debut, and about fifteen minutes shorter. The tone is set pretty early on by the opener/title-track, as it's ten minutes of smooth, yet very meandering, funk rock. The triumph of the album is "Friday Night, August 14th", with an insatiable rhythm and catchy chorus. The second side of the album is in a similar, yet more condensed vein of the title-track, and as such contains the similar problem of meandering and directionless composition. Despite this, it's pleasing to the ear due to the general funkiness and smoothness that Funkadelic is known for. In all, a decent follow-up to their debut, but it leaves a lot to be desired.
