I finally decided upon giving this one a five because not only is it the best black metal album out their in my opinion, but it is hard to imagine any black metal that surpasses this, besides maybe their own "Under a Funeral Moon." It is not the fastest in the world, but the riffs are grim, the vocals are cold as ice, the bass is mean, and the drums are venom.

The capacity of human intelligence seems to limit the capabilities to expand upon any possible creative aptitudes. Indeed, if one cannot even notice the facets that the ingenuities around him are comprised of, how can he be expected to fashion a beast of his own? This inveterate sense of constraint is a great blow to the veracity of mankind?s abilities. It restrains us and holds our minds to the ground below, averting any possibility of rising above ourselves to something greater; something not fathomed by the conventional mind. This concept of seeking to go beyond one?s self, known as ?transcendence?, is essentially a gateway to unlocking pieces of ourselves that can lead to some of the most elaborate and significant creations of our world. For many, this quest to transcend and form creations that were once considered unthinkable and overwhelming consumes life. Certainly it is rare to find such people, but when they are found, creative barriers are destroyed.rI have only come across sixteen albums in my lifetime that embody this ambition in full and they afre all Darkthrones.

Best black metal record of all time. So dynamic, so evil, so fucking heavy. The sense of melody and diversity of riffs are astounding. It hits this perfect middle ground between their debut and Under a Funeral Moon. Also cool that the band is a bunch of cool, chill guys and not incel murderers or something.

pantera and darkthrone: what do they have in common? both bands ripped off other bands and completely changed sound because they were mediocre in their initial genres. thus results a bm debut tampered with trying to get into the genre too quickly, recycling unused newly blackenized dm riffs from their previous album for filler purposes and catapulting themselves into tying with burzum for the first norwegian bm lp by already having the advantage of a record deal and studio time. to make matters worse not only did they steal the sound of their fellow norwegians but they didnt even make it good! bm just as mediocre as their dm was. all at once a superficially bm album but lacking the trv soul

Darkthrone transition to black metal and do that seamlessly. They really create a captivating atmosphere with the excellent, ice cold riffs and the ferocious drumming. It both quite brief and consistent, meaning that it never lost its ability to hold my attention and the atmosphere stayed compelling throughout

Being the first of Darkthrone's black albums, this one probably holds the most historical importance. It is not easy to innovate, and as a turning point for the band and for extreme metal in general, this is quite a fantastic step. However, retrospectively (easy to say), I feel like the album's main flaw is its hesitancy to fully commit to the new bm sound. Again total respect to DT, it's not easy, I am merely talking about this as a musical object here because obviously historically it takes teh cake. The first two tracks and 1 (after an intro that is kind of quirky but honestly cool) especially still display a lot of dm roots, and a lot of slower, doomier sections, but with the new bm tone and prod. And because I don't like OSDM and doom as much, well, that doesn't work well with me. Hoerver the last min of 1 finally fully commits to bm with endless blast beats and an accelerated tempo, super cool. 2 also does that from the midtrack on, and the finale with the softer guitar atop the bm wall is simply fantastic. 3 is a bit better overall with some dope riff especially in the midtrack, and 4 is finally a huge, full on black metal jam (despite a short bit of urgh soloing) with absolutely filthy riffs, clearly my fave here. 5 continues this and is probably a jam too, while 6 comes back to slower stuff like the earlier record and is perhaps less convincing before the album ends just like it started, which is kinda cool. A massive step towards frozen forests for the human kind, and a giant step for DT. 4.0

My nr. 1 Black Metal album of all time by my nr. 1 Black Metal band of all time. Darkthrone?s first venture into Black Metal is incredible, and the thing that actually makes it so great in my opinion is how it?s basically Death Metal transposed into a Black Metal style. The band members themselves would tell you this as they were a death metal band (and a good one at that) just a year earlier.

92/100. Gritty, desolate, bleak. Darkthrone's ABitNS is a 40 minute hellish nightmare, perfectly infusing the grim landscape of Northern Europe with the fiery pits of hell. I loved the demonic vocals, the dirty production, and the punishing guitars.

The feeling of islolation and loneliness is what you'll find on this excellent classic black metal record. While recording this album Darkthrone still were shaking off their death metal roots and perhaps that's what makes this record stand out. A bit more melodic death metal riffs covered in very black metal production and vocals make this a very easy listen and good inroduction to black metal in general.

The first of my attempts to run through all the established black metal classics, and it's definitely solid, but
ultimately kind of forgettable. It did exemplify the occult, foresty atmosphere really well, and there were nice riffs
scattered throughout (with a little old-school dm influence), but there wasn't much here for me to sink my teeth
into. I can definitely see the replay value in it though, so I may have to give this a few more listens. Strong 3.0.

Abandoning the death metal of Soulside Journey, Darkthrone dive full throttle into second wave black metal and in the process come to, at least partially, define that term. Some remnants of death metal influence remain-- chunky chugging riffs, heavy breakdowns-- but they are covered in a thick layer of fuzz and sandwiched between furious sections of buzzsaw tremolo picking, the likes of which should be familiar to black metal fans. This album is over-the-top in spots (the laughing vocal that kicks off "In the Shadow of the Horns"), but is nonetheless effectively cold and atmospheric.

For an introduction album into Black Metal, it was pretty enjoyable and sick, it definitely had its high points and low points. Some high points would be that the riffs and drums were awesome on certain songs, especially the first two songs. A low point would be that, yes, Black Metal bands are known for their long songs, which I could tell on this album. Now this could be taken negatively or positively, but on the topic of the long songs on this album, Darkthrone could have probably split the songs into more songs with how many tempo changes and sound changes there are in some individual songs. Overall, excellent Black Metal Album.
