Darkthrone is a highly influential Norwegian black metal band formed in 1987. They began as an old-school Death Metaloutfitunder the name ofBlackDeath. They released several demos, and one album, and were subsequently signed toPeacevilleRecords on a four album contract. After changing their name to Darkthrone, the band released their first full length album, Soulside Journey. The albumwascleanly produced,(incomparison to what they would release in the future, anyway) straight forward old-school DeathMetal.Soon afterward, Darkthrone adoptedtheaesthetic style that would come to represent the black metal scene, wearingcorpsepaint and working under occult or nordic pseudonyms. At this point, bassist Dag Nilsen left the band. Darkthrone subsequently recorded and released the black metal album "ABlazeIn The NorthernSky,"which was strongly inspired by the works of Bathory and Celtic Frost. Peaceville Records wasoriginallyskeptical about releasing the album duetoDarkthrone's diversion from the death metal style. The band delved even deeper into the black metal sound with the their following album, "Under A Funeral Moon," whichhassince established itself asalandmark for the genre as a whole. It was followed by their quintessentialmasterpiece"Transilvanian Hunger," which is generally regardedasDarkthrone's finest work, although the band itself regards itas being arather untypical Darkthrone record. All of these early black metal albums were characterised by raw sound, extremely low fidelity recording quality, andmusicalsimplicity.Darkthroneremain a powerful force in the black metal genre, although they have experimented with theirinfluencesover the years. Starting with their album "The Cult Is Alive", Darkthrone began a new era of crust punk influenced metal. Although theyhaveceased to releaseblackmetal, they have remained productive over the course of a twenty plus year career. « hide
