Anything about this album really has already been addressed by Adash and Nixon. Just the near perfect folk w/ a heavy helping of industrial ambiance that's much more balanced than Children of God. That lack of exploring their extreme sonic boundaries, however, are what keep this album from being rated higher than their COG and Eternity albums. It's just as, if not more, accessible to this band's music than their Filth album, but both are equally enjoyable in my ears.

The next stylistic evolution in the relatively short but intense career of Swans, The Great Annihilator surprises in how close it gets to psychedelic music (s/t is basically a version of The Beatles' 1966's masterpiece "Tomorrow Never Knows") without sacrificing the gothic identity of the band. True, some of it sounds too much like Children of God, but overall it's yet another impressive addition to one of the rock music's most reliable bands.

The gothic side of Swans seemed to be coming out more and more as their albums came out. Jarboe's presence was becoming more and more massive, and the Great Annihilator is quite possibly the peak of this side. Love of Life put a more accessible twist on this gothic sound, and the Great Annihilator is quite possibly their most accessible record. Songs such as Celebrity Lifestyle and Where Does a Body End almost fall under alternative rock, but the rest of the album is very epic and experimental. They utilize lots of symphonic elements, noisy guitars, and just plain frightening sounds, which aren't unusual for the band, but this record is one of a kind as always. Despite not being as big or even as interesting as their other efforts though, this is still another near masterpiece for one of the most consistent bands ever.

I've finally chosen to start listening to Swans' albums. This was the first, and I have to say, I'm extremely impressed. Very much variation and the melodic sensibilities are surprisingly plenty, despite the supposed acquired taste that the band demands for some.

Swans go mallgoth! Or maybe it's just all the fake flangy reverb and tinny drums that makes me think that and it's actually still tr00 goff, not like your shity poser maralyn mansun. Anyway, they didn't really seem confident in such commercial territory.
