5.0 classic | StylePointz | June 16th 10 | The album begins with the protagonist, Nikki, in a hospital. He lies in a nearly catatonic state, unable to remember anything but snippets from his past. Suddenly, Nikki's memories come flooding back in a torrent. He remembers how, as a heroin addict and would-be political radical frustrated with contemporary society, he was manipulated into joining a supposed secret organization dedicated to revolution. At the head of this organization is a political and religious demagogue known only as Dr. X, who by manipulating Nikki through a combination of his heroin addiction and brainwashing techniques, uses Nikki as an assassin. Whenever Dr. X uses the word "mindcrime" Nikki becomes his docile puppet, a state which Dr. X uses to command Nikki to undertake any murder that the Doctor wishes. Through one of Dr. X's probable associates, a corrupt priest named Father William, Nikki is offered the services of a prostitute-turned-nun named Sister Mary. Through his friendship and growing affection toward Sister Mary, Nikki begins to question the nature of what he is doing. Dr. X notices this and, seeing a potential threat in Mary, orders Nikki to kill both her and the priest. Nikki goes to Mary's church and kills the priest, but after confronting Mary fails to comply with the command to murder her. He and Mary decided to leave the organization together, and Nikki goes to Dr. X to tell him that they are out. Dr. X, however, reminds Nikki that he is an addict, and that he is the one who can provide him with his daily fix. Nikki leaves, conflicted and returns to Mary, only to find her dead, hanging from her own rosary. He cannot cope with the loss, as well as the possibility that he himself may have killed her and not known it, and begins to succumb to insanity. The police, arriving on the scene, arrest him for Mary's murder and the murders he committed for Dr. X. He is put into a hospital, where he begins to remember what has happened.
I have been to two Queensryche concerts and they performed this entire album in order at both. They were incredible. I'm going to see them live again on July 24 at The Crown Theater in Las Vegas. I'm hoping to hear this entire album live again.

5.0 classic | fullautorpg | June 20th 17 | An absolutely amazing album by Queensryche. The songwriting is fantastic, the vocals are solid, and everything hits the marks and then some. A brilliant concept album that defies the trend of concept albums being terrible, Operation: Mindcrime is just an excellent album.r

2.0 poor | EasterInTheBatcave | June 8th 16 | Okay, I like the concept, ambition, and there are some good melodies/tracks here ("Spreading the Disease," "Suite Sister Mary," "I Don't Believe in Love"). The problem with Operation: Mindcrime is that a lot of it feels dated, especially the over-the-top vocals (which are well-performed, but too much at times) and drum production. I can believe this was a game-changing album when it was first released, but, musically, it hasn't aged very well, bearing many hallmarks-- both negative and positive-- of the '80s.

2.5 average | OllieS | December 13th 17 | The only song here that felt like it had some real energy to it was the opener ('Revolution Calling'), but
it's still basically 80s rock and not much else. It's fun, but nothing really special. Same with the rest of
the album. The vocals are kinda monotone / never really varied, and the lyrics/story is nothing special
(I actually thought it was kinda cheesy in places, couldn't really see anything profound about it). Given
all the high reviews of this, I thought there must be something I'm missing...I played it to some friends
(who have good taste), and they thought the exact same - it's just dull 80s rock. Out of all the high-
rated albums on Sputnik, this one I just cannot for the life of me understand how it's so highly rated. I
have no idea what others are hearing.

3.0 good | habster3 | April 27th 14 | While I realize this album's influenced countless other bands, I've never really understood why. The concept's cool, but the music itself isn't particularly impressive imo (the flat production doesn't help). I'd much rather go with Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (the closest comparison I can think of), thank you.

5.0 classic | westerndragon | January 19th 14 | A symbol of perfection. Much can be said to properly praise Operation: Mindcrime, but my simple gauge of excellence is that this album never gets old and anyone who likes music will enjoy it.

0.0 | mandan | January 15th 12 | Not only is this the band's magnum opus, it's also one of the best albums ever made, period. This is one of those albums you must heaar before you die. The story is fantastic, and there's clearly a lot of political commentary on here. Also, the characters have aspects to be analized as well. Musically, this is perfect, and demonstrates how underrated Wilton and DeGarmo were/are as a guitar duo. The rest of the band is on top form as well. Any track could be a favorite, but I'll go with "The Mission" because DeGarmo's solo on it is flat-out epic.rPersonal Rating: 5.0

4.5 superb | Zilla2112 | November 26th 11 | 'Operation: Mindcrime' is certainly one of my favorite albums of the 80's, and for good reason. The story of Nikki and the messages it portrays are very captivating, and the music itself is stellar, with not a bad moment throughout. While it may not be as 'progressive' as some other albums in the genre, it is indeed an incredible album with memorable songs such as Queensryche staples "I Don't Believe in Love" and "Eyes of a Stranger". It's a shame that Queensryche never made an album that even comes close to what 'Operation: Mindcrime' did. Check out: The whole thing.

5.0 classic | Fernando Alves EMERITUS | July 29th 11 | If Marillion's Misplaced Childhood is the best progressive album of the 80's, Operation: Mindcrime is definitely the best Prog Metal record of that same era. Incredible songwriting from Chris DeGarmo and an amazing performance from Geoff Tate. Metal can be smart and these guys always proved that. Amazing record.

3.5 great | charlopiano | April 23rd 21 | As a massive film nerd and possibly aspiring filmmaker, I was expecting to really love this, since it?s a concept album and has a narrative, turns out I only thought it was okay. I dont know what didn?t work for me, but I?m sure many people would love this a lot more than me. It?s a story about a man, sick of a big capitalism-driven society who becomes an assassin for a pseudo terrorist organization. And i can very well understand why people love it so much. It?s very well written, with that classic 80s rock. But to me, it all felt lackluster and really didn?t have much of an impact on me.

3.5 great | GamamJ | April 20th 20 | By many considered the first true prog metal concept, and hard to argue not to be. It is great in its own right, but falters by today?s prog standards. Tate is the clear highlight here, as his soaring vocals steal the spotlight theoughout the whole album. The story too is very well executed, whether as fae as its content, or the musical narrative. Where this album falters compared to modern contemporaries, is the instrumental section. Yes, it is all tight and well written, but very uninteresting. Would certainly appreciate more flash and insteumental sections (which there are none of!)

You're mine!"- Geoff Tate + Pamela Moore. *Personal Favorite album* Best Queensryche album. Best Queensryche song: Suite Sister Mary. 4.0 excellent | Arokan | June 10th 18 | One of the finest metal records of late '80s. Inspired by classic NWOBHM bands Queensryche takes melodic guitars, and theatrical vocals to next level and uses them to tell a great story while adding a bit of lighter rock influences. All of this creates incredible, immersive experience.

5.0 classic | blakeguitarist2 | August 13th 17 | Simply a progressive metal masterpiece, great concept, guitars, harmonies, vocals, melodies, etc.
Bump |
5.0 classic | Resident Metalhead Piranha | July 26th 17 | This may be the closest to an epic journey ever ventured in the heavy metal genre, and it's a captivating, engrossing exhibition into the journey of a man revolting against our politically corrupt society only to be a puppet, lose everything, and be confound to a mental hospital. It's a grim tale expertly told through the band's powerful knack for songwriting and atmosphere. Geoff Tate delivers a powerfully melodic, passionate performance throughout with such versatility it would make Bruce Dickinson proud. The drumming and basswork are great and hold the bottom end well, but the guitarwork stands out even more with it's catchy, effective riffing and spiraling guitar solos. The album is best experienced as a whole for how enticing the story is, but several songs can be picked out for individual listening such as "Speak" with its standout chorus, the title track for its grooviness and sinister vibe, and "Suite Sister Mary" for its choir passages and grim lyrics. Defining progressive rock for years to come, Operation: Mindcrime is a cornerstone of all things metal and may be the most captivating concept record out there.

Even now nearly twenty years later it still leaves most other concept albums in the dust, just brilliant.
