hammock really ruined this album by releasing a better version of it 4 years ago called 'oblivion hymns'.

best experienced in a quiet place, with your best set of headphones, with the volume just a couple notches louder than it usually is

Hammock have been painfully boring lately, they are good songwriters, but they really struggle to do anything outside of their overtly sentimental string and guitar pedal style. A few songs here are pretty great and have something to chew on, the rest is the same Hammock retreating into their own tendencies.

Mysterium sheds almost every trace of Everything and Nothing in order to return to an Oblivion Hymns state, but with a different direction. And by different, I mean more consistent and familiar. Mysterium has a personal, overarching theme to carry the listener through its brief-by-Hammock-standards runtime. One gets the impression that Byrd helmed this particular chapter in Hammock's career as a dedication first and foremost--the fact it's available for the public to partake in is a secondary concern. Even so, Mysterium is overflowing with atmosphere, emotion and serenity. It accomplishes precisely what it sets out to do, and given how beautiful their music continues to be because of that, I'd say that's worthy of praise.

Even on a cursory listen from my phone's speakers this is easily one of the best records of the year thus far. With more strings, more choir, more atmosphere, and more palpable emotion, Mysterium is probably one of Hammock's best albums (which is saying something).
