5.0 classic | Alabaster Jones | May 12th 16 | The times are rare when an album hyped to hell and back actually delivers on its hype. This is one of those times. It's not just that the musicianship is phenomenal or that the emotional range explored here is large, or that it's an hour-and-fifteen minutes long concept album that actually works. No, it's how everything, down to the last detail, serves a purpose and ultimately connects together like the most delicate strands of DNA. The concept here actually has a story with actual depth. I mean, is it about a bunch of supernatural transcended beings that reap the stars and try to control time itself? An allegory of the world today and all the political power struggles? Or is it simply the insane ramblings of someone experimented on to test and study the effects of long-term isolation? At any rate, each of these theories hold weight. The songwriting makes sure to follow the lyrics and the storyline to make absolutely sure the desired emotion is evoked, which means the music tells the story as much as the lyrics do. And with a story with depth, the music follows suit, with riffs on top of riffs, a pronounced bass presence, an endlessly entertaining drum performance and vocals that are simply so unconventional for the genre that it's perfect for the job. Whatever you want to call them; blackened thrash, technical thrash, progressive thrash, or any combination thereof, Vektor has put together a mind-scrambling record that passes both the initial eye test and further examinations. And for a while, I presume, it will warrant even more.

3.6 great | Voivod STAFF | October 8th 16 | If Terminal Redux is commendable for something, is its sheer intensity and the band members' technical proficiency throughout, and those are no small feats. While these attributes may be enough to land instantaneous critical acclaim, they don't necessarily guarantee the production of truly memorable material; moreover, combined with a prolonged album duration, they can mask a lack of diversity song-writing-wise, and that's where the album falters considerably. First 2-3 songs take no prisoners but the same frantic, linear pattern of riffs-over-riffs-over-riffs is blindly reenacted; performing this material live will certainly be a blast, but Vektor still haven't fully concealed their influences and they need to do so, in order to truly stand next to the great old ones of prog/thrash metal.

4.5 superb | cjbizzlebizzle | August 23rd 16 | What a beast. What a beautiful beast. At 73-minutes long this sci-fi-thrash masterclass is chock full of riffs that move at the speed of light and bring the listener through otherworldly realms. Vektor somehow manage to live up to expectations that would easily crush any other mortals after a masterpiece in their previous effort 'Outer Isolation'. Prepare to get sore fingers just from listening to these guys saw through their guitars at machine gun pace. Riff variance is actually so high here that the record provides food for many repeat listens. Vektor seem to have intentionally set out to make a massive, epic of an album. The run-time combined with the sheer amount of content plays into the one true flaw here, it starts to drag and you can't help but wonder if some trimming down could have been done. Oh well, just dedicate the time and give this one respect and it will continue to reward you time and time again. Charging the Void, LCD, Ultimate Artificer, Pteropticon, Pillars of Sand, Collapse and the finale Recharging the Void are surely some of the best metal tracks of 2016. Vektor continue their push to elevate thrash into some higher form of alien art, mission accomplished.

5.0 classic | marf1300 | July 2nd 16 | I almost shut this off halfway through the first track because I wasn't quite feeling it, but I am so glad I gave this a shot. Vektor has created a definite AOTY candidate and quite possibly the best thrash album since Rust in Peace. When this album finished, I had to pause and wonder, "what have I just heard?"

4.5 superb | GamamJ | March 23rd 20 | My favorite ever thrash album. I think this surpasses both RiP and ...AJFA (just because of production). The whirlwind of sci-fi dissonance and awesome shreddy solos mixed with alien-sounding shrieks is just insanely good.

4.5 superb | Erwann S. STAFF | January 21st 20 | Hands down the best thrash metal record OTD. It's fast, very fast even, as the riffs are relentlessly trying to be more colossal and technical than the previous one. Most importantly, it's no wank and they don't try to simply show off how good they are. Going beyond the pure technical considerations, the record is so thrash metal as they pull out the traditional Fade to Black-kind of ballad that you can jam with your non-metal mates (bunch of pussies innit) with Collapse and its so lovely Spanish guitar riff. However, it's the concept of the record that will help the listener to truly engage with the record: if The Joy of Motion is the sound of exploring space with an open mind and only few but still funny-in-retrospect encounters, Terminal Redux edges closer to Edge of Sanity's Crimson: a dark, end-of-humankind story where every bit of hope is crushed by our incapacity to actually be fulfilled.

4.0 excellent | Arokan | June 22nd 18 | A great, incredibly ambitious effort by one of the most promising modern metal bands. On Terminal Redux Vektor was able to create an almost perfect album. Vektor's distinct otherworldy sounding mix of thrash and black metal is a perfect match for a Sci-Fi themed concept album. Their progressive melodic style, carried by aggressive high pitched guitars and vocals that sound like pulled out of the dark depths of space, fills this over 70 minutes-long metal opera with a feeling of mystery, dread and unrelenting force.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Risodo | March 8th 18 | Is "Terminal Redux" the best album of 2016? A very complete range of highly qualified bands is out there launching complete and complex records. But they did it with the same impact as Vektor? This is a band that has always surprised me. Their sonority and concept of Thrash is well differentiated from the classic bands of the 90s, and the bands that died (Metallica), making the same generic. Everything you could want in Thrash Metal is in this work. It has speed, intensity, complexity, atmosphere and ideological deepening of space and fantasy themes. A full plate.

4.0 excellent | TheManMachine | June 23rd 16 | Just for disclosure, yeah I skipped out on that whole story-concept thing: chiefly cuz sci-fi sagas, especially in album form, aren't really my bag/who has the time?; but particularly because the poundage and propulsion of this shrill-hawk snarlin' light-speed rip-roarin' technical precision-fest is sustenance enough to make a tale all too ignorable if you so choose. Not too long after they give in to a track-4 interlude is approximately when things begin to blur a bit, but even then it's quite the on-the-ball blur -- the birr alone is a furious force to be reckoned with, the cohesion still ceaseless, the catchiness still convincing, their prog never usurping their thrash. A track-8 pedestal-o-granules brings 'em back to top form and paves the way for some unforeseen cleans and the epic/even soulful 13-minute ender they deserve. And I get restricting the fantastic femme-vox to the bookended charging+recharging of voids, but ooo it would've been nice to see that wealth get spread. Some contrast for the fury, ya know?

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | May 12th 16 | Up above the world so high, like a fistful of thrash in the sky, we are gathered here today to go on about how much Terminal Redux riffs. Courtesy of Arizona-based metal ensemble Vektor, the Tempe natives' third studio recording offers a bit more to take in than what foul beasts will say otherwise, although I'd be talking out of my ass if I said the album's 73-minute length isn't time well spent. Passable production values handled by Bryon Filson and the bandmates are blatantly passable, and yet Terminal Redux's best point lies in the emotionally-charged, inspired musicianship: guitar leads are on point for the most part, while the drum work from Blake Anderson is nothing short of juicy. Lead singer David DiSanto proves less consistent than the other contributors, for whilst his shrieks are pretty divine, the cleans on the rare occasion he decides to bust them out aren't engaging enough. By and large, Vektor's 2016 affair doesn't make for a totally earth-decimating experience, though it certainly is an episode brimming with maturity and dapper ideas.
