Fenriz thinks of this as Darkthrone's "only true black metal album," which is not a sentiment I agree with. However, it is a sickeningly effective outing. Decidedly simpler than A Blaze in the Northern Sky, with the instrumentation (particularly the drumming) stripped to the bare essentials, Under a Funeral Moon is entirely about atmosphere. That's why this record works as well as it does: it paints a blackened, disparate, and angry picture.

this was rather dull - the riffs seem uninventive and the vox are shit. i would go a blaze in the northern sky or transylvanian hunger way before this, but i might just need to reevaluate those two

More filthy and aggressive as A Blaze in the Northern Sky, but i'm missing some of
the atmosphere that drew me into that album here. Especially the shorter first half
blends in a bit to me. The second half gets better where the longer songs make the music
somewhat more space-y and captivating.
Also can we PLEASE ban the practise of suddenly cutting of songs?

Now this one fully commits to DT's new sound: classic bm is classic. I gotta say weirdly I get
more evil ritual vibes that I feel the frost on this one, but hell yea this is really cool. The
tracks all flow really well and are pretty much all great so no need for a track by track m/ 4.15

Although "A Blaze" stands as my favourite for all time because of its inimitable atmosphere, I admit that "Under" is more pure black release. Songs are quite recognizable one from another, after all, everyone of three group members has his songs here (Fenriz wrote most of them, four). I have no doubt this is cornerstone of new extreme and remorseless black metal scene (saying nothing new I know, but it`s just like that).
