The hype for this album is rather undeserved. The songs all blend together and take predictable courses with little energy or inspiration. Fairly certain that the only reason this is being so highly acclaimed is because loyalists who were crushed by Weezer's mediocre pandering to the masses in preceding albums are now getting a reminiscent taste of an earlier Weezer sound.

Got really big hopes for this, King of the World is epic.rEDIT: With the album out, it matched my expectations. Mostly rules, with a few typical duds preventing Weezer from ever reclaiming their unlikely throne. And maybe they don't have to be kings of the world.

I was concerned EWBAITE would be a one-off fluke, even for all its excellence. Thankfully White Album is the return of the hookworms and bridge trolls. Masterful songwriting. It's layered in much the same way as Blue and Pinkerton. There's the surface appeal, but the more you dig, the better it gets. I'm gonna love this album for a while.

After EWBAITE, I thought it would then take Weezer another decade or so to create another classic. Boy was I wrong. This is easily the 4th work of art by Weezer. Who knew Rivers still had it in him. This is the 2nd album in a row with no embarrassing or foolish moments, and it should easily put the four-piece outfit into the right place. Old Weezer fans, get ready to rejoice.

Edit: bumping to a 4.5. I've listened to this thing nearly every day since it came out, and it
hasn't lost anything in the feels department. I'm confident White has staying power.

This album is one of the rare Weezer albums where everything feels effortless in the perfect way. Lightning strikes twice. The melodies just click together like puzzle pieces. The production is chunky and clean but still has a bit of that fuzz that you want from Cuomo and Co. The lyrics aren't disjointed or incoherent cringe. Even the "dumb" song "Thank God For Girls" is so tongue in cheek that it works fantastically.

White is the reason I became a Weezer fan and it's the reason I still have faith in them. In 2016, when I discovered this album, I didn't realize I had stumbled across something that would become one of my all-time favourite summer records. I love this record inside and out. It genuinely shocks me that Weezer was able to create something this profoundly excellent this late in their career and how it seems this brilliance won't be touched on again, possibly ever.

This isn't terrible or anything, but it is so frustrating that this kind of record gets that much hype when so many others, better conceived, more cohesive and intelligent pieces of work get criminally unappreciated. This is an empty-headed summer record with mediocre production and instrumental work (the bass is nonexistent here...), filled with vocal hooks so great they hide the lack of emotional depth (especially compared with their flawed but so much more ambitious and fully-realized predecessor). A third of this record is really damn great however : the powerful nostalgia "Do You Wanna Get High?" and poignant midlife heartbreak of "L.A. Girlz" are career highlights for sure, while "Wind in Our Sail" and "(Girl We Got a) Good Thing" add a real melancholy undercurrent to their lightweight optimism. But the whiny couple of closers, and their borderline misogyny (shared with the confusing "Thank God for Girls") leave a bitter taste in mouth. A mixed bag, mostly good, but with flaws too big to overlook.

Solely eying titles like "California Kids", "Thank God For Girls", "Do You Wanna Get High?", "Jacked Up" -- hell, kinda all of 'em, really -- may lead to some rash conjectures involving the patented Weezer corn being carted on this here ivory-hued+self-proclaimed glory-dayz recrudescence. With their alt-rooted power-pop pioneer-isms in full and facile effect, a filler-free and to-the-point complexion, and let's face it; just an all 'round wondrous knack for writing songs that are sunny and catchy as fuck and quaint to boot, it don't really matter what they're goin' on about too much. But then again -- the whole contrived-seeming naivete and fantastical puerility and general outmodedness and lotsa questionable lines thing remains quite the polarizing quaint. It's a nice thought, but in 2016 am I to believe "the California Kids" are gonna solve all my woes and take care of lil ol' me? The 'woo's are great, though. Not wince at the "If I was king of the world, you'd be my girl" chorus? I mean, it's very well-meaning, sure. Same well-meaner that tells L.A. Girlz to act their age and sweeten up their lemonade yet frets over leaving his headphones in a car and "trying not to stare at her chest." "L.A. Girlz": hangs with the best of 'em.

weezer finally decide to go back to the sound that put them on the map in the first place and with that, great results arise. some of these tracks would be a fucking success if they had been released during the 90's, you can't help but smile while listening to this shit. finally, you can replay a weezer album! seriously, it get better with every listen. 4.5+

After EWBAITE was released I was genuinely blown away that they got back on track to their classic sound, but this throws rthat momentum away to the Raditude/Hurley era of enjoyable yet somewhat uninspired more pop radio weezer. If this was rreleased pre EWBAITE you all would be shredding it instead of overhyping and overrating. 3.2/5
