While there may be somewhat unmemorable parts to this album, I am so obsessed with this sound that any flaw is irrelevant. A gorgeous blend of shoegaze and metal, which really takes me to the other world he was writing about.

Very beautiful and haunting. I've heard this classified as Black Metal but the only thing "black metal" about it is its lo-fi production, the guitar playing at points, and the atmosphere it gives off. I've heard it compared to Ulver's Bergtatt, but other than its beauty and atmosphere there's not many similarities between the two in my opinion. There's no shrieking or shredding and not much as far blast beats or anything. It really is an album you can just sit back to and enjoy the beauty and mood it gives off. In fact there's really not a bad moment on here but it can get a little repetative at times because each song basically follows the same formula. Regardless of that this is still a truely spectacular listening experience. Just don't go into it expecting a traditional black metal record.

While a great album, Souvenirs is a bit too simple minded. Yeah, it's still effing gorgeous, but it doesn't have the awe effect so crucial with a band like this. I like Souvenirs but thank God for Ecailles.

I will start by saying that this album is, without question, the best album of 2007... and perhaps the best release of the past 3 years. An album this complete has not been heard since The Arcade Fire dropped "Funeral" a couple of years back. The sounds are lush and the guitars are masterfully layered to create enchanting and blissful soundscapes. There is no stand out track/s to speak of here, as they all melt and intertwine gorgeously.
The bar has been set very high here, I hope that someone else can come close... but I wont be holding my breathe.

Upon being exposed to this album while driving through the winding roads around my school, not having a set direction but just wanting to see the world around me, this album revealed its true colors. Sure, its minimalist production and vague vocals may lead to some claiming this album is rather hard to absorb, but honestly it feels most relatable in this manner, and so gorgeous.

While I used to love this, now it seems like a compilation of boring, repetitive, delicate tracks about hope and eventuation in another world, and it is unable to keep the momentum it sets for itself. Intros are the "heaviest" parts of songs, but they wind through the same chords for too long before dropping out into acoustic passages (which aren't very atmospheric or interesting but they plod along as though they are) and meander through another four minutes of the same chords until Niege decides to almost-climax with oohs and aaahhhs. r

2007. I'm illiterate in metal, but this doesn't seem like metal. Which is something I've noticed about a lot of the best metal, so I'll throw in a bet that this has the slightest chance of being the best thing ever made.

The beginning of an era. It still sounds amateurish, which might repel some, but the blend of dreamy shoegaze and black riffiness started here. The fact that Neige had, at that point, never heard of Slowdive, is quite impressive given how faithfully he transcribes the dreaminess and melancholy of shoegaze and dream pop. It's also very folky at times, but still ethereal, which adds to the mysterious yet pastoral atmosphere. Thus, what is lacking here; why is Ecailles universally known as the trve game changer, while this one is merely seen as a prep? The answer is multi-dimensional, but we'll start with the songwriting: it's kind of one-dimensional compared to what will come, the transitions are sometimes a bit off, the riffs are not as memorable as on later outputs, etc. On top of that, Neige is drummin' here and while it's not bad, Winterhaelter truly upped the band's game. The black metal still has to truly reveal itself too, being here more a companion of the shoegaze than a real component of the songwriting. Still, the album manages to be beautiful and revolutionary, but still a bit green to truly change the game. Take it as a shoegaze album with some black metal riffs here and there, and you'll be graced with one hell of a record.

This is a lovely debut that already shaped their song with a lovely mix of softness and
black metal, but not their best effort either. 5 is the track that tips it down a point,
with relatively annoying vocals and a weak riff. Generally speaking, this record is
strongest during instrumental or vocalised parts, whereas when Neige sings, the riffs go
simpler and the overall music is less entertaining - although his performance as a singer
is not at fault. 3 is the main jam here, with an enchanting intro and atmosphere. Literally
the artwork in musical form. 4 is kinda jammy too but not as much, and 6 is really cute. 1-
2 are worth a listen as well, esp the guitar around 2.5min on 1, but because of the verse
parts they aren't jams really. The fade out album ending is a bit of a shame. Still a solid

In an attempt to create the brightest black metal album ever, Neige crafted a white, glistening work of screechy shoegaze with a raw, nostalgic tone and some early career highlights. It feels a bit underdeveloped in places (Sur l'Autre Rive... being the main contender, complete with Audrey's unenthusiastic guest vox), but I see why someone would see that as its strength, as in adding to its charm. - 8.0

Alcest craft a soundscape that's relaxing with harsh edges around a number of corners and crevices, meshing styles that would otherwise feel counter-intuitive. The final result is more surprising than one might expect, as the harmony created falls into place quickly and easily. You may actually be surprised how such a dynamic is quick to show off its best moments, but the entire journey is just enough to feel sufficient.

A very consistent, dreamlike shoegaze release from a quite unexpected source (at the time) in Neige. There are very few, if any black metal (or metal in general) elements and this is a great accomplishment for Alcest. A fantastic debut that has its flaws, but makes up for them with sheer beauty and ethereal atmosphere.

I fail to see how this album is called anything near "black metal" by its creator. There's nothing black metal to this, mind you three or four textures among the whole album. I wouldn't call this metal either, this is just plain Alternative Rock with distorted guitars and maybe a little bit more gain than most bands. WOW IT MUST BE METAL.
My rating is based on the condescending hype I've read about the album. It deserves a 4 in my head, maybe a 4.5, but the pretense and all around overestimation of the album makes me despise it but really like it at the same time. Still, people really, really need to take a better look at their objective observation of music nowadays. :|
