To be fair to this I had a listen with lots of interruptions so quite unfair of me to judge, but basically this is run of the mill DT bm plus a touch of punkiness I guess. Tracks have good riffage but they are often twice too long for the ideas they try to stretch. So it's fine but there isn't really much to stand out, and it's kind of hesitant between being atmospheric or punky riffy and as a result the album feels kinda half-baked. Still fine so 3.3

Not as punk grooving or as consistent as Total Death, but Plaguewielder is a nice callback to the band's more black metal-focused earlier works--while still adding in a dash of their "modern" influences here and there, too. It's actually pretty fun to hear black metal Darkthrone with better production values--the clarity of which also makes it easier to pick out the different influences this band's style has had on others; opening track "Weakling Avenger" is rife with Satyricon-isms and closer "Wreak" in many parts sounds like an obvious precursor to Wolves in the Throne Room's "Two Hunters."

Not a bad album by any means but for a black metal Darkthrone album it's very underwhelming. Most tracks, especially "Weakling Avenger" and "Wreak," have quality Darkthrone riffs; the main issue with the the album is consistency. For every great riff, there's a mediocre one to ruin its momentum. But on the upside, the songs that start off pitifully usually have a redeemable section or two to make it worthwhile, such as "I, Voidhanger" and its classic black metal outro. Worth a listen if you're a Darkthrone fan, but it is their weakest album.

Somewhat underwhelming for Darkthrone standards. The riffs are still good, but the songs and ideas are spread too thin and the album doesn't have enough moments that excited me. Making it an overall slightly unmemorable expierence

Nothing about this album was satisfying. They didn't build on anything. It seems like they didn't feel like they had spent enough time being amateurs and took a minute to show the world what it would have been like if they didn't stand a chance at widespread recognition of their sound. "Look, this is what it would have sounded like if we'd lost a High School battle of the bands!" Sad.
