While Good News did an excellent job of combining the new Modest Mouse accessibilty with the old Modest Mouse grate and charm, We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank is too much accessibility and not enough wit and charm.
The album has most of the things that should make it work, but they don't work like they used to. The craziness of the music and the vocals falls flat rather than impressing more than ever before, and some songs just have little value at all (We've Got Everything, Fire It Up).
Fortunately, Modest Mouse is too talented to mess things up too much. Parting of the Sensory succeeds where Spitting Venom fails, with length and emotion that completely enrapture the listener. March to the Sea and Little Motel also provide a good amount of redeeming value.
Overall, the album is much more hit-or-miss than any previous full lenght, and very disappointing coming from a band of Modest Mouse's pedigree. Most fans will enjoy some of the songs on this album, but hopefully we will see another style change in the next album, and this time for the better.

Modest Mouse's most accessible release so far, and much more cohesive and focused that its predecessor. While they have their strong points and their weak points, Modest Mouse are as edgy, raw, and idiosyncratically weird as ever, despite what hipsters will say.

We Were Dead... is an album with a glowing potential that is evident in tracks such as "Little Motel" and "Spitting Venom" but is let down by too many songs that lack staying power including the catchy "Dashboard". You'll love it for a few weeks, but don't expect to make more than a few songs permanent fixtures of your regular rotation.

Don't be mad at modest mouse, you need to listen to the whole album a couple more times. I didn't like it at first but over time I grew to love em. Its good music, there's more then dashboard and missed the boat

I could be so hard with my rating, but, that expresses my anger with this new Modest Mouse. Where is the new "float on"? So far from it, too bad.
