Once you cut out the previously released songs, the terrible recordings, the unfinished jams and the gags, you are left with 'They Hung Him on a Cross', 'If You Must' and 'Grey Goose'.

While there is a lot of filler on this collection (early/boom box recordings of well-known songs, and a few lo-fi outtakes), there are some gems. Especially on the first disc, there are some hard to find recordings that showcase the band's early raw melding of hardcore punk, heavy metal riffs, and pop-influenced songwriting. Other highlights include the Leadbelly covers featuring members of The Screaming Trees and the achingly beautiful "Do Re Mi." Worth it mostly for hardcore fans, especially if you can find it used or at a discounted price.

I'm a huge Nirvana fan but this box set just seemed bloated. I saved a lot of money and got the Sliver: Best Of Box instead.

The thing about this boxed set is that there's way too much crap. There's different takes of songs that are almost identical to the originals, then there's different takes of different takes which sound the exact same as the previous take, etc. Basically, the first disc is almost entirely indescernable noise. The second disk features a lot of useless alternate takes, but has some really great stuff buried in it (ie. Oh The Guilt, Smells Like Teen Spirit [boom box recording]). The third disk starts off really bad, but gets a lot better (ie. Marigold, Sappy, Do Re Mi, etc.). The DVD isn't bad, but the sound quality on some of the videos is embarrassing. I think if they cut it down to about 2 discs, and maybe a shorter more professional DVD, it would've worked.

Nirvana is a band that comes once in a generation, and to this day is one of the most influential bands in rock. Nirvana is one of my top two, if not favorite band and for any Nirvana fan like this, this box set can not be anything but a 5, as it is 3 discs of rare, unreleased tracks, the last glimpse we will ever get of the genius which was Kurt Cobain. People probably will agree and thats fine because not everyone is a Nirvana fan, and if your not this is junk, but for anyone who likes Nirvana, or grudge in general, this is a master piece, something special that we might never get to experience again.
