Kindly Bent to Be Kind for the Blind Focus Annihilator of Filth, also known as the Seer of all Still Life in Blackwater Park who crafts the Illusion of Safety while remaining a Jane Doe. The Satanist of Vheissu fears this being, and often seeks Shelter while providing a Great Misdirect in the form of Chinese Democracy. (The being is politically active and its favourite album is American Idiot.) In closing, I'm Not a Fan, but the Kids Like It!
EDIT: I think I like this even more than The Seer. While that album succeeded more atmospherically, this one is more diverse- and in a two-hour plus album, diversity is welcome. "Bring the Sun / Toussaint L'Ouverture" is the only misstep- it's a little overlong. Regardless, To Be Kind is one of the best records of the year. 4.8

It's a wonderful apocalyptic record! I didn't think that at 62 I could still be amazed by so much creativity. The Swans! a group that had decided to die but then resurrected as no one has ever done in musical history, their powerful music confident and musically more mature in a moment in history full of platforms that have destroyed creativity. As Vito well said "The Swans are the sentinels of music"

I used to absolutely love this album, but this time round I wasn't so convinced. Sure it has plenty of fantastic, memorable, 5-worthy moments, and it holds the distance superbly well for a 2hrs+ album, but I just don't think the length is fully justified here. Feels like the (plentiful) ideas are stretched a little bit too thin. May just be a case of a bad listen, but this hardly feels like a 4.15

94/100. Six months ago, I listened to Soundtracks for the Blind on an airplane flying home from a wedding. The experience was unlike any other album I've ever listened to--- from the bleak atmosphere to the misanthropic lyrics, StftB was one of the most disorienting and exhilarating things I had ever witnessed.rYet for all the praise I give StftB, I have to say that To Be Kind is a better album. In its two hour runtime, Swans hit the perfect balance of accessibility and chaos, crafting a bleak and harrowing blend of experimental rock. I loved the tight grooves and tense crescendos, as well as the many sizzling conclusions that left me feeling highly rewarded. Giving this a 4.5 for now but could easily see this becoming a classic to me in the future.

While The Seer succeeded atmospherically, To Be Kind is more diverse and-- dare I say, straightforward? Songs like "A Little God in My Hands" and "Oxygen" are the most direct I've ever this band, but they are also supremely enjoyable, meticulously crafted and expertly produced. Indeed, though it's two hours long, To Be Kind mostly avoids the trap which The Seer fell victim to-- that of being just too much. (The overlong "Bring the Sun / Toussaint L'Ouverture" is the only misstep in this regard.)

A Little God in My Hands and Oxygen are both fantastic songs but for the most part the rest is just pretension and peer pressure into liking it because it's experimental. It's a shame though, Bring the Sun also had some great moments but most of it just sounds like grunting to me. Just because it's experimental doesn't automatically make it good, but this is just my opinion and a lot of people seem to love this idk.

The obnoxious repetition, the horrid, nails-on-chalkboard, not artful vocals, the repetitive and obnoxious guitar riffs, the 20+ minute-long songs full of these characteristics make up a 2+ hour-long cd that isn't fit for human consumption. This is awful. If this weren't the Swans, no one wouldve even given it a second rthought. I can't see how anyone possibly could enjoy hearing this. Most overrated album of 2014. rBy far.

After not being able to finish the Seer all the way through, I was skeptical about this one. Nevertheless, To Be Kind surprised me with how easily it stuck with me. It is both haunting and daunting as fuck yet it somehow clicks with one much easier. Overall, To Be Kind is looking like AOTY material.
