Alcest abandons the black metal and is all the better for it. Shelter is the duo's most fully realized album. Impeccable production coupled with tight songwriting that climaxes and crescendos with beauty. The first great release of 2014.

I love the direction Alcest took with this album. Sure there is no longer any black metal thrown in, but as a whole the album is beautiful, warming, and fantastic dream rock. It feels like when the snow is melting away and spring is coming into bloom. A gorgeous album, one of my favorites of 2014.

Since my initial experiences of this album, its impression has grown on me like the morning foam on a sun-kissed beach. Secret's atmosphere is sweet, addicting, and as warm as a a smile from a gorgeous stranger. I love this album, and I hope that Alcest expands upon this atmosphere in the future.

Alcest proves on this album that they don't have to be metal in order to make damn good music. This is some of the most beautiful music I've heard in my life, and makes you feel as if the summertime has come and winter is slowly fading away. My favorite album of the year so far.

A versatile album that sits comfortably between dream pop, shoegaze, post-rock and whatever dreamy genres of guitar-based music you can think of, Shelter creates a bright, laid-back atmosphere and keeps it throughout (albeit drifting into more of a melancholy mindset in two or three tracks) while still maintaining a sense of grandeur. One might call it tame, but it is full of tasteful, dreamy tracks. - 7.5

I don't mind the shift to post-rock in itself. I do mind that the resulting album sounds quite generic throughout its course (if it weren't for Neige's vocals and some vaguely different instrumentations like on the album closer). it is not a bad album, but it just does not cut it for me. Only a couple memorable high points - mostly track 1 and 2, maybe 3. In a vacuum this would still be meh, irrespective of the rest of their discog. 3.3

Shelter sees Alcest dropping the black metal entirely from their sound and this results in a pleasant and enjoyable release, but one which is more one-dimensional than their previous work. It's got some absolutely fantastic songs ("Voix Sereines," "Delivrance") but it also has some underwhelming tracks, including one total dud ("Away"), and that aforementioned one-dimensionality is disconcerting.

Neige's latest is an even mellower affair than its predecessor, making it a smoother overall listen. There might still be the issue of sounding repetitive, but the consistency feels more appropriate here, which alleviates the aforementioned issue ever so slightly.

(I figured that the album didn't need another full review, so here are my thoughts): "Opale" is Shelter's highlight and downfall. While all of the other songs are enjoyable on their own, they just flat out don't compare to "Opale" at all. In a sense, "Opale" is like a young, vibrant couple frolicking on the beach and the others an endearing elderly couple on a casual stroll; sure, they're both tender scenes, but the latter scenario just doesn't stay as interesting as the former scene over an extended period of time.

If "Voyages" were a transitional album, "Shelter" has the band seeming more focused and confident in their sound once again. As has been the trend, Shoegaze elements now nudge the more metal sound out completely, but the music is still atmospheric and dreamy, bringing a welcome diversity of shimmery sounds and southing moods. While the album lacks momentum, and can be dense at times while too minimalist at others, "Shelter" proves that Alcest can be successful after metal.

No, Alcest really isn't metal anymore, and it's really easy for me to respect that because they somehow manage to keep a similar structure despite that fact. A beautiful shoegaze record from front to back, but after a handful of listens, not a single track stands out on it's own and it's lasting value is minimal.

It goes without saying that this album is beautiful. It's a little one-note emotionally, but it is such a joy to listen to all the way up to its final moments (that gorgeous cello!). The addition of producer Birgir J?n Birgisson, guest musician Neil Halstead, and some guest strings vary it up a bit, but it still tends to lack real progression over the album's duration.
