The moment the soft, sweet sounds of the opening track 'Never Meant' on their self titled album hits your ears till the final moments of 'The one with the Wurlitzer', you will find yourself immersed in a happy place and it will most likely end with you in tears....well maybe not but either way this music is truly emotional stuff. Every note rings clearly with all our favourite human emotions love, heartache and regret.
The songs are full of space, i don't mean that the songs feel empty but that the band tends to lean towards a minimalist approach in the presentation of the songs, this space allows the vocal melodies to weave their magic in your head. All the while the guitars drum and bass each provide their own supporting or counter-melody with the occasional mixing of odd time signatures and rhythms, leaving the listener in a diverse landscape of aural pleasure.
That being said they're not as lofty as bands like explosions in the sky as the songs have just enough weight in them to keep them grounded, not just floating up around your head. This band is for anyone mildly interested in ambient chillout indie and jazz type stuff

American Football's classic debut is a melancholic tale of youth and heartbreak sung on the balcony of a grandparent's home as the dusk gives way to the night. It's nostalgic and transportive without ever having to require growing up with it. It evokes a feeling that I don't believe will ever be replicated in music again, despite how hard its followers try.

American Football really has a clean, relaxing sound going. My main contention is that the songs are too long on the whole, due to the lengthy instrumental parts at the end of most songs. My other little issue is with the trumpet; it just doesn't seem to fit into the songs very well. Other than these minor troubles, their sound is very original and paved the way for bands to come. Kinsella's lyrics are one of their strong points, but unfortunately more than a few songs are instrumental or have very few lyrics. His voice is quiet and suits the songs perfectly. All of the music is very well put together, the drum work is especially original. The best songs are "Honestly?", "Never Meant", and "I'll See You When We're Both Not So Emotional" in that order.

This is the culimination of everything Mike Kinsella and the other guys in the band had previously been involved in. The Perfect cocktail of indie, emo and Math and kind of a slacker type of vibe not so different from the likes of Pavement. The obvious lyrical influences from Morissey and not finnishing songs before entering the studio seems almost like a homage to a bad habit the band had in "half assing" Things as guitarist Steve Holmes once said, resulted in one of the most laid back, stripped Down, perfectly emo-jazzy and super sad records ever

Never meant is up there for my favorite song of all time. That song is all you need in autumn. I remember waiting to go to school and I sat on my porch in the morning as the sun rose and listened to this whole album. One of the most pleasant experiences I've ever had.

Versatile rhythms and glistening guitar harmonies are the main reasons for why this album is so exciting to listen to (the drum work definitely also being worth a mention). That said, the actual nerdy magic of this album is mainly shaped by the grounded, rather untidy production and Kinsellas overzealous, infectiously unrestrained vocals. It is an album that, while being meticulously crafted, profits from its little imperfections. A perfect soundtrack to half-awake moments on mornings after all-night gaming parties. - 9.5

American Football, for all intents and purposes, is a "cult band", a band which is heavily influential to their respective genre despite only hanging around long enough to release one or two things. American Football undoubtedly had a huge influence on emo and math rock, and their self-titled proves why. From the unmistakeable classic opener known as "Never Meant", to the wonderfully written "Stay Home", American Football is an exercise in emotion and nostalgia. Even the two instrumental tracks, "You Know I Should Be Leaving Soon" and "The One With The Wurlitzer" are emotionally poignant, and that is without Mike Kinsella's angelical voice. The trademark twinkly guitar sound is likely the best we'll ever hear from any band, and the drumming is stellar as well as fun. For every time you have ever reminisced about your past, American Football has created the soundtrack, one that would serve to cement the legacy of the man (rather, the legend) himself, Mike Kinsella.

The Best Emo album of all time. Mike Kinsella plays the role of a workman translating complex rhythmic patterns into beautiful cathartic series of arpeggios without losing the charm of pop music. American Football's debut and only LP contains 9 amazing and overly-sincere songs that almost anyone can relate with, and they evocate every single memory you're trying to hide, maybe even in your subconscious, no matter how deep they are buried. "Never Meant" and "Honestly" are the highlights of this record. Two heartwarming songs with beautiful band playing and intense riff delivering. It is recommended to give repeated listens to the album. It may not click at the first one.

This is an album which is beautiful in every way, even its imperfections- like that girl you loved then, you love now, and you know you will love for as long as you live. Like anyone, she has flaws, but that doesn't matter to you, because those flaws are part of what make her so perfect. American Football captures a late, teenage summer night perfectly. The spot on production and superlative instrumentation ensure a masterfully created atmosphere, and ultimately it is that atmosphere which solidifies the record as one of the best indie releases- hell, just best albums- of all time.

My attention seems to ALWAYS stray, several times, while listening to this album. Certain parts simply bore me, and slip by without leaving anything memorable behind. Some people enjoy getting lost in the long minimalist sections. I think they could have been a great deal more interesting. If you like the sound this band spawned (and they really deserve that credit), I would recommend that you explore the band This Town Needs Guns--it is an all-around better version of American Football IMHO.
