When I tell people this album had the potential to be an OK Computer of this decade they are quick to disregard it. FOOLS! Sampling a song is not the same thing as listening to the whole album. And believe me this monster does not need to grow. One listen will be sufficient. Album of the decade has passed you by. Music that sounds like an evolution of Porcupine Tree's sound. And I'm not trying to diss Porcupine Tree. I love them dearly. But this band has me hooked. Shocking, beautiful, brilliant. Four frackin vocalists. You think you know your stuff about vocal harmonies. Believe me this will blow you away. This band pushes the limit to a new level making this (Orphaned Land aside) the second most brilliant debut album I ever heard. Get this by all means possible.

Where the vocal harmonies are impressive [aahing and oohing], I can't hear the instrumental sections as being as strong upon the first listen. Nothing really STRUCK me aside from a few sections throughout the album. Maybe fans enjoy the 'aa/oohing' more than me, but I think that could've been room for more differing lyrical sections. Some of the lyrics at times sound a little repetitive. With that said, I think I enjoy this album more overall than Tool's (no rearranging) 10,000 Days album of the same year. The lead male vocalist faintly reminds me of Brian Wilson. I prefer the second half of this album over its first half.

Borrowing themes from an obvious influence in Pink Floyd, followed-up with more modern tinges like Porcupine Tree or Riverside, Pure Reason Revolution puts a fantastic spin on modern progressive music. This isn't to say the band is throwing in new ideas for the genre, but mostly that they're capable of keeping these ideas from growing stale. There is almost a sense of accessibility that is void from other prog records that makes The Dark Third such a listenable record. The approach is pretty damn easy on the ears, though there isn't too much sacrificed that fans of progressive music are going to feel alienated from listening. Definitely one of the most interesting bands in their field today.

The harmonies in this album are a real breath of fresh air, the use of different instruments and atmospherics really give a wall of sound feel and a beautiful album a monstrous sense of emotion. There is nothing really offensive to the ear but they could have cut some of the song lengths down and made them jump into it faster like "Asleep Under Eiderdown" which is my favourite song. And even better, this is their DEBUT!
