By now, everyone probably knows what to expect from these guys. They’re epic, classy, black metal complete with mellow sections, clean singing and quicker black metal parts. The biggest thing that these guys have going for them is that they do it better than most and their songs seem to have a lot more direction without resorting to being weird.

Solid as always, one of the most consistent bands out there. However, I don't feel that much differentiation between their 2010s albums: they are all great, but none stands out above the others.

RIITIIR is a grower. It contains some of Enslaved's best songs ("Death in the Eyes of Dawn," "Roots of the Mountain") but they, and indeed the whole album, require multiple listens to appreciate. The performances are great across the board, but what steal the show for me are Ivar's clean vocals. The improvement is obvious; they are fantastic, and the choruses on which he sings comprise some of the record's best moments. The only songs which don't quite do it for me are the last two- they are good, but each feels a little drawn out. Overall though, RIITIIR is a superb record and shows Enslaved's relentless commitment to progression. 4.5

On their new album RIITIIR, Enslaved stick to the same one two punch of prog and black metal that they've used on their past albums, but they keep things different and engaging with interesting song structures and some of the most epic atmospheres I've ever heard. Enslaved have definitely melded beautiful cleans and atmospheres with vicious black metal highs and riffs to create one of the best albums of 2012. Best songs are Death in the Eyes of Dawn, Roots of the Mountain, and Forsaken.

I've been listening to this album for a few days now and I just can't get over how majestic this entire album sounds. It's like they took all their music starting with Below The Lights and went way beyond it. I didn't like the album at first, but repeated listens are almost a necessity with this kind of music. After a while, you start noticing things on each listen, things that weren't there before. A true masterpiece from one of the best BM bands around.

As of right now, I'd say this would probably come after Vertebrae, Axioma Ethica Odini, and Below the Lights (in that order). Enslaved just never disappoints. Death in the Eyes of Dawn and Roots of the Mountain may very well be some of the best songs they've ever put out.
