I can't decide which is the true Outkast classic, Aquemini or ATLiens. They're both aided by smooth, weird instrumentals, both scrawled with lyrics that are futuristic, braggadocios, and street-conscious all at once, and both are just built to perfection as albums. It's getting harder and harder to pick between the two because they're both so perfect, so we might as well make them both Outkast classics.

I'll be straight up, I may be a bit biased, but in my eyes ATLiens is the perfect example of a rap album that flows together extraordinarily well, while also not having one weak track the whole way through. I'll argue that, lyrically, this just might be the greatest rap album ever made.

This album is phenomenal. I have listened to it about 5 times already and I find myself listening to it from front to back without skipping one song. From the alienesque flows of ATLiens to the earworm hooks of Babylon to the eerie beat of E.T extraterrestrial, I cannot get enough of this album. God damn I wish I was alive to listen to this in 1996.

Outkast bucked stereotypes about Southern rappers not being able to spit intelligent, complex lyrics. Andre and Big Boi were on another level from ANY of their peers, let alone rappers from their region. The beats are soaked in sparse Southern funk, with some great wah-wah guitar in there too, and pounding 808's, and although only maybe 3 really stand out, the job is to provide a backdrop for the two emcees as they share their versions of the human experience. Andre 3000 drops verse after mind-blowing verse, discussing topics like music, love and sex in a way that few men could articulate. He simply must be mentioned among the 10-maybe 5 greatest to ever pick up a mic. Big Boi was never on the same level, but he does more than just hold his own, as his unique flow fills in the few times where his actual lyrics falter. If anything, they provide the perfect yin and yang to each other, Big Boi is Dre's connection to the street, Dre's inclusion shows the open-mindedness of Big Boi. The two artists would continue to reach lofty new heights as individuals, but ATLiens was their peak group effort.
