 | JesperL we can save sputnik, all we need is ten more negative sleep token reviews!!!!!
 | StrizzMatik I gotchu on that rip https://mega.nz/file/zUYTTShK#EIhiiZV5OGDWZSUxWQAFV8YOdJDqnk40OM-BKvcKjwk
 | CaliggyJack That said, rape is rape. And the crime alone is why I choose to pirate Polanski's films, but I do not personally mind praising the artists art in this case, however, said artist will not receive any monetary support from me.
 | CaliggyJack Thanks for your kind rebuttal to my post. You argued a valid point and were poignant while not being rude or condescending. The Polanski issue is definitely something that could use more discussion, and I wish to iterate that just because a victimsays they're okay does not mean I instantly forgive them. The issue with Samantha Geimar is one that I feel requires a bit of nuance as she has repeatedly asked that people stop using her as a MeToo symbol.
 | Hawks Review for new Mouth Wound will be up either tonight or tomorrow night! Be on the lookout. ;]
 | cylinder It's so much fun. Probably some of the most singular/personalized noise I've ever heard. Texturally mind-blowing and with a sense of humor to boot. Never heard anything quite like it tbh.https://adhuman.bandcamp.com/album/korm-88
 | cylinder That's awesome! Seems like he was a pretty influential figure in the noise scene too - quite ahead of his time. Have you ever heard that comp that I rated recently?
 | cylinder Hey man, wanted to say thanks for the Emil Beaulieau rec. Been having tons of fun. Surprised I'd never run into this guy before, but way better late than never.
 | Hawks Hey buddy I know you dig that Mouth Wound album from 2023 so you'd probably like the new one too! Not quite as creepy but a little more diverse. Sick stuff.
 | someone i must zane it the heck out this year fo sho, and then propagate the good word of those zanes to all who heed
 | someone nailing that gun to my to-check list
 | tectactoe Nice Dirty Three rating. My favorite of theirs.
 | Hawks Thanks brother!! :]]
 | CaliggyJack Here and there. Good days and bad days. Mom injured her eye so I was taking care of her for a week but she's all better now. And she finally paid off her car so we celebrated with Dunkin. Other than that, normal.
 | kildare Happily, my siblings and I are the only ones in the will, and are total dedicated to peace. Unhappily, there's hardly anything left of a previously not-insignificant estate, but there SHOULD be. To which family member(s) did the rest of it disappear to, and how did they pull it off? ****'n war on the horizon, man. Watch this space! :-D
 | kildare "Hate the effect money can have on things like this, really brings out the ugliness in people": Totally. Even my own wife transmogrified into a hand-wringing miser, and became all "Well, yes Smithers, but remember that time when....?"
 | kildare Hey Dad. Family starting to squabble over inheritance as her end draws near, so I've disengaged a little from Rock-based stuff lately and been spending more time with classical (2024 kind of sucked anyway). Ever hear Allan Pettersson's symphonies? A lot of atonality, reminiscent of Schoenberg et. al., but then he tosses in some tonal passages that make you crave the light before you dive back into midnight grimness. It's pretty good stuff, but only for a certain mood
 | SomeCallMeTim been on the fence but ultimately probably won't. Only bands I really wanted to see are Slowdive and American Football and they aren't playing on the same day. You going? If I do go it'll def be day 1
 | DrGonzo1937 lol thanks mate, appreciate, you?re cool too.
 | JohnnyoftheWell well, I gave it another with no distractions a notebook and definitely got more out of it with one foot out the door. will type up my notes and stick them in the staff proofs, quite possibly room for a collab there (my conclusion is already pretty vague, so i'll avoid fleshing it out any further - your call though)
 | JohnnyoftheWell Yes, about an hr ago, mixed feelings so far, some lovely later passages but not convinced by how much it leans into empty space. Necks tend to suggest a scene and dare you to look away for however many, many minutes ? this one demands vast extents of audience participation to have a sense of how you got there to begin with. Could probs flog that premise for a rev idk, do you have anything lined up?
 | Hawks Hell yeah bro! Glad to see you dig new Undeath too. Man do much amazing dm this year its nuts. Best year for dm in 15 years for me.
 | Demon of the Fall Hey! You have two ratings for the new Xiu Xiu which is curious (on the ratings page at least, under different dates)
 | Hawks Jammed that Teitanblood album last night and its for sure a ripper!
 | kildare Lmao. Reviewed straight from the heart!
 | kildare The critical area for me is starting at 3:45 and the transition to the next variation at 4:20. A funny thing happens in the Perlman rendition: His tempo is about the SAME for the earlier variation, but way faster on the following variation. Bach hardly ever left tempo markings, so possibly performers perform EACH VARIATION at an arbitrary tempo? If that makes sense? Anyway, hope this is worth it for you. Thanks for checking in!
 | kildare https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8Fchz5YSSI
 | kildare I loved your La Femme review. It looked tricky -- even if you're fluent in French! Either way an excellent bit of wordsmithery.
 | kildare Hey Dad. I was actually listening to a version of Bach's Partita Chaconne played on guitar the other day, and thought "I wonder what DadKungFu would think of this INCREDIBLY slow tempo?" It's definitely slower than someone like, say, Itzhak Perlman would play it. But it's my favorite version, and is both very slow and on the guitar, rather than on the violin. Don't know if Bach would approve or not
 | Hawks Wiped the comment and sent you an email.
 | Hawks I love you bro. I don't wanna leave but man I think I have to.
 | Hawks I have no social media at all sadly. Do you have an email?
 | Hawks Hit me with a rec on my new list! :]
 | kildare Perfectly analyzed. A site dedicated to the art of music, both run and used by dedicated music nerds, is pretty much destined to have some issues here and there :D
 | kildare Jeremy Gordon said in an Atlantic article about Steve Albini: ?Anyone who has spent time around people who are really into music has met the type of person who seems totally obstinate, and borderline caustic, about why the bands they like are better than the bands you like.?
 | kildare I would not be surprised if EVERYONE who is still active on Sputnik feels this way deep down. I can feel it bubble up every time someone says my music sucks. I speculate that it?s almost like an instinct for music lovers. So, if there?s a lot of that going on, all kinds of minor disses and slights, and there?s no good way to resolve them, resentment brews.
 | kildare I wonder if Sputnik is sort of feudal, for lack of a better word. Like, it lacks a centralized state authority that would monopolize ?violence,? figuratively speaking. Feudalism was characterized by private wars and feuds, Hatfield-Mccoy style, and it seems like Sputnik is susceptible to that kind of conflict. But we can?t go to war, so we just get mad and disengaged
 | Three paragraphs coming. Don't reply if you need to cut me off. You know me, man, I'll write forever!
 | kildare There's some background on this but would rather not go deep in a public forum now that things are settled down: https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=206123
 | kildare Damn, sorry about that. I meant to and it must've been my turn to reply or something and got distracted. Link on the way, gotta find.
 | kildare No hard feelings if you burn this one too!
 | kildare Question: I got involved in a kerfuffle last month and dropped your name in a thread. Did I notify you that I did so? I notified a couple other staffers, and when I checked later I could verify that I notified them because it was still in their box. I can think of SEVERAL good reasons why you would nuke mine, and in that case asking felt like pestering. But things feel chill enough to ask now.
 | xxm Nice to hear! I?m doing fine for the most part.
 | xxm Hey there, just a quick question but what?s with the relative lack of reviews lately? Not trying to be too nosy, just curious. Anyways, I hope you?re well.
 | Above I gave Sackcloth n' Ashes a listen and really dig it. Different than what I was expecting, it has a nice dark vibe to it. Feels like a grower too
 | DoofDoof looks obscure a ****, will check it out thanks
 | Above haven't really listened to them! where should I start?
 | Ryus have u considered a hank williams review? extremely glaring oversight on this hellsite and i would love u forever. no pressure obvs
 | Manatea My guy i thought i answered you. Been insanely busy so not on sput as much, what about you?
 | Hawks Ok so as for Schnittke, I love String Quartet No. 3 but No. 2 just sounds flat to me in comparison. But man Violin Partita No. 2 was almost an insta-5 for me lmao. I'm gonna make a classical list like I'm doing with my jazz one right now!
 | Hawks Found 2nd string quartet. Jamming now!
 | Hawks Trying to find them on YT music as we speak man there's so much its hard to comb through lmao.
 | Elynna Thanks! A lot of time and effort goes into compiling those lists, so I very much appreciate the kind words
 | Hawks Violin Partita No.1 in B minor, BWV 1002 is sooooooo good.
 | Hawks I've been wanting to get into classical stuff gimme some good shizz to jam!!!
 | JohnnyoftheWell in theory yes yes. in practice uhhh will hit some qs when(??) inspo strikes but my T key is falling out and my patience for sput is at an X-year low :/
 | kildare Bach's the greatest composer of all time [2]. HOWEVER, if Sputnik had multiple rating categories, and one of them was for innovation, I'd have to rate Claude higher.
 | kildare Oops, my "Debussey" message got messed up. I tried to use a "greater than" character and Sputnik didn't like it. I meant to write something like "So, Debussey rated better than Bach in your library?" Just a follow-up from a comment you made awhile back
 | kildare Thanks for the inquiry in my shoutout box. It was kind of final, but I run into old, disappeared users on the site and I always wonder what happened to them, so I wanted to put some...certainty out there in case I disappeared.
 | Wasn't on my release playlist, but now I ought to hear. Cheers
 | Sowing A little late here but looks like Koris will be covering
 | PumpBoffBag thanks for heads up- never listened before but hopping on it now! And congrats ;)
 | JohnnyoftheWell Hmm if your question is inclined towards perceived ethics, I'd say you're okay, but if it's based on uncertainty that your criticism can remain unclouded, I can have a peep?
 | xxm Congratulations on Staff!
 | Manatea Me too. Gonna be a great timeeeee
 | Manatea Indeed. We have infiltrated the hallowed staff halls together lmao. Johnny forgot to include me
 | dedex glad to have ya on board m/
 | JohnnyoftheWell any chance of that Seer blurb making its way to discord in the quite close future
 | Manatea Indeed I did. I doubt I?ll get it but hey, worth asking, you know?
 | Manatea I hope you applied internet twin
 | pizzamachine That one hooked me too haha, the vocals are gorgeous
 | pizzamachine Doubt that?ll ever happen again lol. If it did I?d be game
 | kildare Hey, I thanked you for all your support in the third(?) comment block from the top of my new Joplin review. Have a great winter!
 | JohnnyoftheWell Apologies for stalling - hit a bit of a slump lately. Got a few skinny writes to burn through to gather steam, will hit you up in the (hopefully) soon!!
 | JohnnyoftheWell Oooh yeah could do - not sure how balanced the dialogue would be given that my wider familiarity with Jarrett/that whole arm of jazz is probs considerably behind yours, could could still make it work ig! Alternatively, there are uh two of us and two halves of the album lol
 | JohnnyoftheWell Survivor's Suite review? Am game for a collab if we can think of a good structure
 | JohnnyoftheWell Have bloody finally gotten round to Doji Morita - your original rec was so long ago that I can't remember the specific framing (Meiko Kaji aside), but have been enjoying her debut and A Boy q a bit in the last few days. Fills a perfect middle ground between trad-leaning melodies and the trending 70s folk pop palette, great stuff
 | Elynna I gave it another spin, and I enjoyed it much more this time around. Definitely a grower
 | Elynna Yes, I?m sorry it just wasn?t for me. I remember liking how they fused their traditional and modern sound, but it was the repetitiveness I found off putting. I might give it another shot in the future, because they?re undoubtedly very talented.
 | kildare Yeah, there's no underground music on that site, so not a real alternative to Sputnik for most of the reviews we do on here. Just thought I'd mention it
 | kildare Oops, meant to put this in first. Link to one of my fairly mediocre, but fun to write articles: https://medium.com/@Lkildare/musical-tastes-collections-concerts-and-our-lives-with-the-art-of-sound-part-i-7b08b6b69074
 | kildare This year I made resolution to (1.) learn Audacity then (2.) use a copywrite-free recording of a Bruckner or Mahler or Shostakovich (their long) symphony to snip out audio bits of it ? like the beginning and end of the Recapitulation, say -- and post them as videos. I can then (3.) elaborate on the main text in the video caption. The caption tech actually seems more powerful than YouTube itself.
 | kildare I thought you might interested in the site. It would be perfect for posting your potential Webern review. First, there?s a larger Classical audience on the site, you can apply to ?magazines? with editors. Also, I like Sputnik for a few reasons, but Medium is far more powerful multi-media wise: Embedded YouTube videos, images, pretty much anything we can do on Facebook. It?s not great for underground stuff, though. But it might get more view and comments for stuff like Webern and Lainey Wilson.
 | kildare Got it, thanks! No hard feelings if I overstep and you feel the need to defend Country with a troll-like ferocity. I'm sort of tough. I think.
 | kildare Unless you were planning to review it - I'll just recycle what I have somewhere else. You'd do the genre justice in a way I can't.
 | kildare Hey again, I'm tinkering with a Lainey Wilson review. Kenny Rogers: Butt Country? Garth Brooks: The epitome of butt-country? Kenny Chesney?
 | xxm PS your reviews have really made my year this year. Sorry for essentially repeating myself but you?ve had one hell of a year when it comes to quality reviews and I wanted to once again thank you.
 | kildare Lol. I SUSPECTED it was butt-country! The other few on my list are probably of the same ilk. It's possible I don't have the ear for the better stuff. The music of the track is very regulation-issue; maybe I just like it because I want to see what watermelon moonshine tastes like. Thanks for checking it. My wife likes country but could care less about analysis, which I always crave
 | xxm Hey there again, just want to know how you?re doing right now. Hope you?ve had a pleasant year all things considered.
 | kildare I value your opinion even if you hate it! I value your opinion no matter what genre we're talking about, but my emotional investment in Country is not very high, so in this case it's purely out of curiosity
 | kildare Hey, so I heard a Country song over Thanksgiving that really clicked with me: Lainey Wilson's "Watermelon Moonshine." Not counting Johnney Cash, that brings my list of country songs that I "love" to around five. But maybe Lainey is part of the "rrrmusic industry" that you disparaged in your old 2013 list "In defense of country"? Anyway, adding a country song to the list is a rare occurrence for me, so I thought I'd mention it in case you were looking for a country album to review.
 | pizzamachine EZ. Pick album that you?ve been thinking about lately. OR pick an album that is something special to you. Just start writing about it. If it doesn?t turn into a full review yet don?t sweat it, write whenever you have more stuff to say
 | Mort. huh? i have both rated
 | Manatea Close enough. Mine?s in a few weeks so i thought of it. Hope things are going good otherwise!
 | Manatea Lmao happy belated my friend. I was curious to see when it was based on our last conversation
 | Trifolium It isssss! It's entirely beautiful, for everyone age 10 and up, definitely including adults.
 | Trifolium Lampje was translated after all! A children's classic in the making!!! https://www.scmp.com/yp/discover/entertainment/books/article/3124057/lampie-and-children-sea-book-review-dutch-authors
 | robertsona This is a good question. I don't have to deal with it much. Sometimes I'm just sardonic about something lame about the insulter, which probably isn't the best move. Lemme think.
 | JohnnyoftheWell Clutching at straws here ngl https://www.poetryinternational.com/en/poets-poems/poems/poem/103-27313_IN-WHICH-THE-POET-CELEBRATES-HIS-TWENTY-FIVE-YEAR-OLD-LOVER
 | JohnnyoftheWell Would not have earmarked Diamanda for porcine obliteration, but fate has forced my hand
 | JohnnyoftheWell Thanks lol, this presents a challenge. I am going to have to affect a summoning ritual. Hog portals here we come
 | JohnnyoftheWell Um is there any Diamanda Galas lore or music involving pigs or swine?
 | Manatea It was absolutely amazing. Hope you got to see some of the food pics i threw up. Yeah i got back and work has been absolutely crazy. Trying to get back in the swing of writing though, you know?
 | Manatea Hey east coast twin that was separated from me at birth. How you been?
 | Above thx bro. love your country reviews
 | parksungjoon ignore anything you read or may assume of this band and its genre and just check this, trust me. https://youtu.be/rStDmrTqrWs
 | Rowan5215 love the cause, no way I'd be able to commit enough time to it unfortunately but props for spreading the word man
 | Manatea Got on it! Idk if I?ll be able to do the rest of the days but I had a bit of a break today so I threw one up. Thanks for the referral mate.
 | parksungjoon https://www.sputnikmusic.com/review/87466/Manuel-Gottsching-Inventions-for-Electric-Guitar/
 | parksungjoon in den garten pharaos. that or any of the kluster albums. but tbh ur effort is too good for this site i feel sometimes
 | Sunnyvale Hey there! The post is up, sorry for the delay. Monster writeup by the way, well-done!
 | sevEn Glad you dug! That album really help me in my spiritual journey.
 | pizzamachine I checked the new Creeping Death and Walg, they?re both good, but I?m hoping to find more pop this year tbh
 | JohnnyoftheWell damn, can confirm that this is very much the discourse - send the boi up
 | JohnnyoftheWell sure - gonna need you to change the sharing permissions though
 | BaselineOOO Alright. Who told you about my Corneliu Codraneau tattoo?!
 | someone I have noticed some such upheaval. They've been consistently dropping stuff like twice a month since at least 2020. I never paid much mind, considering it's all mostly just them ducking around with improv, amplifiers, instruments, etc. Hardly sth you can consider a proper studio album.
 | Sunnyvale Awesome, thanks! Just Shoutbox me a Google Docs link when you're ready.
 | cycosynner Thanks for your comment on my Butcher Babies review!
 | Havey any recordings in particular? i guess one thing that has kept me from exploring them is that there's never been a complete set afaik
 | parksungjoon what prog nerds lol everyones listening to pop punk and metalcore and 3rd rate 2010s indie folk
 | JohnnyoftheWell HI thank you so much for expressing interest in Sputmix 2023! There is one (one!) bureaucracy barrier for you to overcome - please hit up this form and send your info over asap, so I can get a database going and pin down what this thing is gonna look like. Love! https://forms.gle/zkKtidhnXpgYUsUv5
 | Havey what about him? his quartets were some of the first classical i ever liked, definitely made a strong impression back in the day
 | Pheromone father dearest do you - oh trif linked it
 | pizzamachine U can defs gets a violin feature in my new musics if u wanna
 | xxm You?re welcome.
 | xxm I?ve practically said this before but while Country Music isn?t my favorite genre (though I do enjoy some of the poppier hits from when I was younger and prior) you point out what?s great about it with verve and I love your reviews and lists on it (I don?t share your apperant dislike for Waylon Jennings but that?s neither here nor there). Thanks Again
 | pizzamachine Trying to review it now but the baby is pretty loud!
 | JohnnyoftheWell oh gosh i am in that boat probably tryna think of words for the new Oval. um. if we're talking new stuff, new Fire-Toolz is apparently dec (haven't peeped yet) and her stuff is at the very least always engaging
 | Ryus https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1037980 congrats
 | kildare Thanks for alerting me this, not to mention the kind words. I always read yours, and should comment more, but I'm far more self-conscious about my comments than my reviews. Incidentally, every time I read one of your reviews I go to Spotify and see if they?ve started streaming the Takacs quartet recording you reviewed. Still not there, but it might show up on YouTube eventually.
 | robertsona I haven?t thought about that script since I wrote it in a three day burst, but I?d like to combine the dialogue I like with a plot about teaching kids in NYC maybe mixed with the love triangle thing?Ty either way!
 | CaliggyJack Oh Lmao! Thanks for reminding me, I still need to watch that sometime
 | Borracho it's all yours, man. didn't have it on my radar. very sweet of you to ask though! i'll check it
 | GhandhiLion Thanks for the rec. I had heared about it this week
 | Mort. the aforementioned edu entry https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/simone-weil/
 | Mort. but in general i would say that understanding the concepts of attention, void and ego hold the key to understanding weil. the very dumbed down version is our ego gets in the way of us seeing people or events how they really are (giving just attention). as the stanford edu entry puts it:the void by definition is empty (vide)?of idols, futural self-projections, consolations that compensate un-thinking, and attachments of collective and personal prestige.
 | Mort. Gravity and Grace is a very good place to start. for background reading to make it easier to understand Weil i reccomend Iris Murdoch's The Sovereignty of Good. her moral philosophy is basically Weil's but translated into a more analytic philosophy style and much more understandable. Murdoch isnt a mystic like Weil. i also reccomend any of the essays by Silvia Panizza, who translated an unfinished play of Weils with one of my lecturers, Philip Wilson
 | unclereich That avatar review was great. Thanks a lot! Needed the laugh today
 | xxm You?re welcome.
 | xxm Hello again, just want to say that I really hope you?re taking care at the moment and that your reviews are simply stunning as I?ve mentioned before.
 | pizzamachine Haha definitely take breaks when you need to, Contributor life can wear on ya (speaking from experience)
 | pizzamachine Lots of great stuff this year :], how goes the writing?
 | Sunnyvale It's a great writeup, I just a made a few minor edits for flow and then also (for formatting) made it so 12 is in italics. It's the typical standard on Sput to make album titles italics, which you can do by typing [/i]Album Title[/i]. Thanks!
 | Sunnyvale Received, thanks! I'll pass this along.
 | Sunnyvale Thanks! I tried to view it and apparently need access. I've sent you an access request, let me know once it's approved!
 | someone Just please r e m o v e the link message after using so that others cant use it
 | someone Hello, good fellow. Any chance you are interested in joining our cult aka core sput user Discord? All the best are there and it's basically our local Casual Convo thread divided into multiple sections
 | JohnnyoftheWell Copy that, gonna wait it out and see whether I have to transfer to parannoul to save sput from katatonic embarrassment, but will probs join otherwise, PS Venice is on
 | Mort. please nominate a new album, your previous now has a rev
 | Sowing Hello! Congrats on the promotion. Please shoutbox me an email address that I can send your contributor forum invitation to (I'll remove the shout once I send the email). Thank you!
 | JohnnyoftheWell HI your contrib application is LATE by which i mean i want to READ it !
 | JohnnyoftheWell it's a lot innit :[ gonna get something up for that soon - feels like a rough album to write on even though the things to be said are mostly crystal clear
 | Mort. glad you enjoy, im a big fan of their track Iwm. shame they never made it really. lots of good bands on hydra head that just never made it
 | Pangea Hey DadKungFu, do you have a discord or email or something where i can message you for secret santa later?
 | someone that burns em quick tho. butter adequate amount?
 | someone one third cup of butter, no oil
 | Sowing Will have to check that, thanks.
 | CaliggyJack Can't go wrong with anything Kinji Fukasaku
 | PitchforkArms Dude that's tragic. He was such a positive influence on everyone here. Tough loss :(
 | CaliggyJack All six lone wolf and cub films, Kill!, Zatoichi (1989), when the Last Sword is Drawn, Zatoichi (2003), The Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, Love and Honor, 13 Assassins, Legend of the Eight Samurai, all of the Ruroni Kenshin films, Sword of Doom, Red Lion.Start with those.
 | Mort. lol yeah plato is a strange one because he can be extremely straightforward and down to earth, the best introduction to philosophy you could ask for (literally just some guy going 'what is x concept?/what does x mean?) and on the other hand can be incredibly esoteric and mystical. I havent got round to Parmenides yet but if it involves a discussion of Parmenides' philosophy im not surprised. read a book on the pre-socratics a while ago and it was incredibly difficult.
 | Mort. if you havent read any simone weil it sounds like you would find her interesting tho. she was continental and her philosophy/take on mysticism is at its core ethical
 | Mort. 'essay on Heidegger's Philosophy of technology' god kudos to you for attempting that, i find heidigger (and a lot of contintental philosophy) really difficult to understand. all ive read is a little bits and pieces of most continental authors, its a massive gaping hole in my reading(along with eastern philosophy). pretty sure ive read heidigger on technology and understood probably 10% of it lol. Im currently reading Plato's entire corpus which has been slow going but very satisfying.
 | Mort. was getting my masters a couple of years ago with plans to go onto a phd but covid forced the course online and i was struggling with mental health issues/family stuff so my marks were dropping pretty drastically. i plan on going back and getting my masters at some point in the future. You have a philosophy background or just an interest of yours?
 | Mort. mainly analytic philosophy with a pretty heavy focus on language, logic and ethics. Specific philosophers-wise I studied a lot of Wittgenstein, Simone Weil and Iris Murdoch. im also decently well read in Plato. the uni i went to specialised in wittgenstein studies. also took some one off modules on other areas of philosophy such as environmental philosophy, a module on Nietzsche, philosophy of religion.
